PLACE: 3465 North Center Road, Sagi- naw, Michigan. SETTING: Our story opens with the re- laxed atmosphere of the summer of 1987. Captured within these few short months were many good times and new friends. But soon enough, school days were once again upon us. We all, willingly or unwillingly, returned. No matter what the attitude, spirits quick- ly rose as school festivities became the scene for many Eisenhower students. Elections were held in September, and the results were: Grant Hegenauer, President; Mike Luebkert, Vice-President; Michelle Fal- kenburg, Secretary; and Nikki Shuler, Treasurer. After elections, Forum got underway immediately as it organized the very successful blood drive. The students and staff contributed a total of 46 pints of blood. The next event was Spook Spirit Day on Halloween. The day was filled with fun, as prizes were awarded for the best group, funniest, and most original costumes. Following that were the Commander Court elections and dance held in Feb- ruary, and then the 3rd Annual “Моск Rock , with Drama Club. Both activites were four-star events! The Eisenhower Forum was involved with many other activities, including the meeting with the MacArthur Con- gress to discuss next year's govern- ment at Heritage High School, class council elections in the fall, and Home- coming Queen elections. President Hegenauer was happy that several members continually showed up at meetings. Grant was also “glad to have Mr. Rummler's help this year as well as the years passed. Mr. Jim Rummler completed his 8th year as Forum Advisor, and we can all agree that they were eight of the best, especially the final year, 1987-1988. i | i President Grant Hegenauer, Kristine Becker, and Mr. Rummler demonstrate the ‘‘Rumbo Rap”. In past years, these leadership forums have lasted the entire day and have consisted of moring workshops with outside speakers and after- noon discussions moderated by students. The results from the Project Outreach Student Lead- ership Forum; were sent to the board of education at both local and state levels. This year a new approach to fo- rum was taken. The program was reduced to half a day and due to the consolidation of the two town- ship high schools this years lead- ership forum was geared strictly to the forming of the new high school. This was a perfect chance for the student leaders from both schools to voice their opinions and work together towards a common goal. By means of this student leadership forum many recommendations were given to the issues and concerns of the community dealing with the new high school. | | The Project Outreach Student The project outreach planning committee: Front row: Eric Robinson, Grant Hegenauer. Back row: 3 : Melissa Hendrickson, Steve Palmateer, Stephanie Bierlein. Leadership Forum planning com- mittee met months in advance to help make this forum a successful one. The planning committee was made up of 20 students from both IKE and DM. Discussion topics were as follows: Academic Honor Programs and Concerns, Social lActivities, Athletics, Curriculum, Clubs and 'Organizations, School History, Promoting School Unity and Spirit, Student Rights, Stu- dent Government, and New Activ- ities and Ideas. These discussions were very beneficial to our admin- istrators, because it gave them a complete report of the needs and desires of the student body be- fore the impending consolidation. They kicked off the year by sending four representatives to Mackinac Island to attend the second annu- al SADD Michigan Conference. “The conference was very benefi- cial to us because we learned a member Jim Schultz. Also, the group created more jobs and new | offices to be held in order to give more people a chance to have more ponsibility in the group а а to balance the distribution of ` ded to the prior offices of president, vice-president, and secretary treasurer, were a sec- ond vice-president, social direc- tor, publicity chairman, education chairman, historian, and repre- sentatives from all four classes. SADD set and reached many goals during the 1987-1988 school year. They strived to in- crease awareness of the effects of drinking and driving not only in the school but also in the commu- nity. They made their annual trip to Maccabee Gardens in October and planned to consolidate with the SADD chapter at Douglas MacArthur in late February. They also had a bowl-a-thon to raise money to aid in their awareness campaigns. These were just some of the activities SADD involved it- 1 і to make the year success- ul. They survived rain, sleet, and snow to conquer the elements of the great outdoors. The Outdoor Club saw a great increase in membership, as many people wanted to show off their Daniel Boone traits. The club took two trips in the win- ter months. One was a canoe trip on the Manistee River, and the other was a train ride through Canada on the Snow Train. “It's hard getting to sleep when you have no body heat, replied Mark Colby. Mark and many other people learned quickly that to stay warm, you must all sleep together. Tents then were occupied by 10 to 12 peo- ple in order to stay warm. Canoeing proved to be the exciting trip of the year as temperatures were much warmer than expected. As it happens every year, someone fell in the river. This year it was the canoe of Charlie Perkins and Grant Hegen- auer while they raced Mr. Jim Klug ` and Kurt Kruse. Huff and Puff was the nightly entertainment and it kept ev- eryone by the fire till the wee hours of the night. No matter how the camp- ers spent their time, it was always fun. This year’s officers were Carrie Beckwith, President; Todd Cates, Vice-President; Melissa Hendrickson, Treasurer; and Sandi Wells, Secre- tary. OUTDOOR CLUB 67 Hegenauer mn SÉ —— sr Ae E 1 PEP CLUB ENERGIZES STUDENTS DURING IKE’S LAST YEAR The fall of '87 was a very eventful one for IKE’s Pep Club. Early in Sep- tember the organization sponsored a spirit week to fire up the students for the last football game between Eisen- hower and MacArthur. Throughout the week students and faculty dressed up to follow themes such as Rambo Day, Concert T-Shirt Day, Daytona Day, Ge- neric Day, and the traditional Green and White Day. Next on the organization’s agenda was Homecoming. Planning for the elections of the court, the assembly, the half-time ceremony, and the Satur- day night dance began weeks in ad- vance. Pep Club voted on “Changes” by David Bowie for the Homecoming theme and began selling tickets for the dance one week prior to the event. “This year’s Homecoming was a big success for us. We sold the most tick- ets for the dance that have ever been sold and ended up with a very good profit”, commented Secretary-Trea- surer Cathy Fleschner. After the Homecoming festivities ended, Pep Club had time to concen- trate on promoting spirit for the fall and winter sports. They also gave themes to their winter dances. The school year came to an end with a spring spirit week and the guys' legs contest. All in all the organization did a very good job of making Eisenhower's last year a spirited one. SO WHAT DO YOU THINK? We hope our efforts have been a success this year but, that is for you, the reader, to decide. After hearing many complaints at the end of the '87 year ranging from, “the yearbook is a hardcover senior book” to “Who made all the senior pictures different sizes , we decided that it was necessary to unify the book with some sort of preve- lant theme as well as making. ії a fun book that includes every student of Eisenhower High School. Therefore, we began organizing at the end of last year for this year’s yearbook. Before coming back to school this year, we had already had chosen a theme, division titles, and a basic structure or layout of our book. Also completed or partially completed were many of last year’s spring sports which are not usually thought about until the fol- lowing fall. At the start of the year, we worked diligently to com- plete the opening section, '87 spring sports, ‘and fall sports as well as senior pictures and mug shots. As the year progressed we tried to keep on top of things, such as what our school organizations, athletic associations and administrators were accomplishing. Thus, we look upon this yearbook as a success and we hope you do also. This has been the last year of Eisenhower High School, and what a good year it has been. YEARBOOK Monson 73 AS THE WORD TURNS Newspaper staff found itself facing many new challenges in the 1987-1988 school year. After recovering from the 87 move to MacArthur High School as a result of the great fire, they found themselves in more familiar surround- ings this year. With all new faces, the IKE News Staff utilized its fullest poten- tial with many new, creative ideas. Un- der the direction of Rol Crane, the Newspaper Staff covered a wide vari- ety of topics ranging from light sub- jects such as Grant Hegenauer's Heap of the Month to more serious matter such as “teenage drinking”. NEWSPAPER Monson The Staff is expected to produce 6 pa- pers this school year (3 each semes- ter). They increased their circülation this year by expanding to MacArthur High School. Other improvements are the addition of color (blue) to their spreads as well as more detailed graph- ics. Also this year, the staff has tried to ` bring together Eisenhower and MacAr- thur. They have incorporated MacAr- thur students in the class during sec- ond semester and plan to have a 4- page spread through the center of their paper. 1988 NEWSPAPER STAFF IS: Wendy Antell, Stephanie Bensch, Kristi Bird, Bill Chu, Gretchen Eggers, John Ford, Rachel Griffith, Grant Hegenauer, Melissa Kirkland, Stacey Kleinbriel, Kurt Kruse, Jennifer Mc- Dowell, Helene Park, Brandon Peters, Brandon Reif, Jim Schultz, Norm Stone, and advisor Rol Crane ... far left: Gretchen Eggers seeks advice from student teacher Jim Klug, center: Advisor Rol Crane acts stupid , below: and then there was light!, left bottom: Girls newstaff stalls for time, right bottom: Boys newstaff asks, ‘‘Mirror, mirror, on the wall ... who's the fairest of them all?” NEWSPAPER Monson 75 A POOR PLA YED THAT STRUTS AND FRETS ` w AA AA? УУУУ ed ГИГ! N AV AN How much do you know about Fo- rensics? Well, I’m going to tell you. There are many events one can enter in competition with, including radio cast and story telling, along with vari- ous forms of speeches, such as an in- formative, impromptu, duo, oratory, sales, dramatic interpretation, and se- rious speech. When one enters in any of these events, there is a certain amount of time to prepare before presenting it to the judges. The next step is the grading for semi-finals and finals. Regular meets are held every Saturday throughout March, then come Dis- tricts, Regionals, and finally State competition. The Forensics team was quite large this year, with many new faces on the team. Many were underclassmen, therefore next year's team will be ех- perienced. Hopefully, you understand what Fo- rensics is and realize how fun it can be. Who knows? AM THE WORLDS A STAGE The Drama Club produced two plays this year. The first play, Who am I This Time , was a narrative starring Gabe Hausbeck and Jenny Sweeting who played two actors in love. Todd Cates had the hardest jo b being narrator for the whole play. The student director was Sandi Wells. The second play Louder! | can't Hear You! was about a family that has a lack of communica- tion. The main characters for this play were Jim Schultz as the father, Bill Chu as the son, and Babs Byrne as the daughter. The Drama Club had a new advisor, Jackie Derocher, this year. The club enjoyed her very much and learned а a great deal from her. “It takes hard work to put on two plays and there are a lot of people behind the scenes, says Jenny Sweeting. A lot of work and imagination is used to make props and clothing, and to put on make-up. But in the end the command- ing performances received their well- earned applause. 77 Fr 78 Campbell The choir had many great moments this year. The choir sang Christmas carols at the Fashion Square Mall and helped out with the Toys for Tots pro- gram. They also made an appearance at the Millet Learning Center near Christmas. The choir had a competi- tion at the Civic Center which they placed in the top four choirs. The Rue- ban Daniels Life Long Center invited the choir to sing under the direction of a director from the famous Interlockin Camp in Traverse City, Michigan. When performing, the Eisenhower choir shows a sense of togetherness. Choir is really a great class, it's like we're one big happy family”, stated choir member Joel Abenth. It is a great way to ex- perience holding a real job, while at the same time achieving two credits and also earning extra money. There are several co-op programs avail- able, such as office co-op, Distribu- tive Education, Trade and Industry, and Pre-Professional. Students are able to choose their co-op program, but are required to take a class relat- ed to their job. A minimum of fifteen hours a week on the job must be completed by each student. The stu- dents are visited on the job by Ms. Carol Socha, the coordinator at Ei- senhower, every ten weeks. During each visit, Ms. Socha and the super- visor formally evaluate the student. While participating in co-op, one must write a report for Ms. Socha each week summarizing what is done on the job and in the related class. The majority of co-op stu- dents make minimum wage, but some jobs pay more. Many students keep their positions on through the summer, working full-time, as they find their jobs to be very rewarding. gg CO-OP Martin 4 E ER US RN EEN тах б, ОРРОЅІТЕ PAGE: Up stage left. He stated that adapting to high school was hardest. He admitted that he had a hard time suspending students for long periods of time. He enjoyed seeing students turn themselves around in high school and eventually graduate, and often felt that he had a part in helping them. The girls didn't have a winning season, but still kept on going. They worked very hard, right from the beginning of the season, and by the end, their improve- - ment could be seen. One of the disappointments came when they - found out two of their best play- ers were moved up to the JV team. However, the other team members worked extra hard to make up for them. _ Although the girls had a 3 win, _ 13 loss season, they had a lot of . fun and learned a new game. The next several weeks were busy for everyone, as there were many preparations to be completed: the football team had extra practices; the Pep Club members were in charge of getting the dance tickets, preparing the decorations, and dec- orating for the Homecoming assem- bly and dance; the band members worked hard to perfect the music to be played at the football game; and both the cheerleaders and pom pon members put in extra hours to look especially sharp for the big game.
