Hlif ary 0 Ezkbelberger Sen imf H i lv School This is probably the first time that you have seen a title of this kind in a Nornir. It is surprising what small knowledge some people hold concerning an institution in which they have spent three years of their early lives. It is altogether proper that you should know a few facts about the school which has offered you so many opportun- ities. In 1885, the board of education purchased a one acre lot on High Street. Upon this location a two-story brick building was erected. A course of study, including a curri- culum for a high school, had been adopted in 1887 when a class of five students re- ceived diplomas at graduating exercises. The present high school was founded in 1893 when nine young ladies and gentlemen were graduated as the first class. Willialn L. Hoffheins was the principal of this insti- tution, which occupied the second floor of the High Street building from 1893 until 1900. In 1897, Captain A. YV. Eichelberger, an enterprising and public-spirited citizen, erected at his own expense a modern school building on an elevation at the northwestern part of the town. It was constructed of brick, Six the frame work being a fine quality of wood. For two years, it was known as Eichel- berger Academy, an institution to prepare young ladies and gentlemen for college. Surrounding the building is a campus con- sisting of four acres. In 1900, Captain Eichel- berger presented this building plus the grounds to the borough of Hanover for use as a public high school. In recognition of his munificent act this institution has since been know as the Eichelberger High School of Hanover. In 1904, the old building was torn down, and on the same site a large two- story building was erected. In 1931, two wings were added to this nucleus to complete the present structure. It now contains the best modern equipment, school apparatus, and school furniture. This is merely a simple sketch of one of the most handsome high schools in this area. The description would not be com- plete if one neglected to mention the campus and its shrubbery. The Old Oak is symbolic of our high school just as the Statue of Liberty is symbolic of our country. Its branches greet the eyes of prospective stu- dents just as the flaming torch greets the eyes of our men returning from the war.
