SUPERINTENDENT LEHMAN CROSS THE GREAT CHALLENGE TO EDUCATION IN AMERICA Material achievements in our country have been marvelous. American workmen have comforts and conveniences that kings of former times could not enjoy, a standard of living undreamed of in the world's history. Outstanding advancements in education should not be overlooked. In America a far higher percentage of our young people receive high school and college educations than in Europe. Despite the contributions Americans have made in exploration and develop- ment, we are still faced with a great challenge. Our country's high school drop-out rate is forty per cent. The fact that one out of five'boys between the ages of 16 and 19 who look for Work and fails to find it doesn't mean that jobs are not available, rather we are not giving enough variety in our grossly inadequate vocational programs. The lopsided picture of jobs looking for men and men looking for jobs sug- gests that something needs to be done through movements in education to get us out of this dilemma. Let us not be on the scene with too little too late.
