For a half century student lrfe of EHS has been recorded and preserved 1n a publrcatxon ed1ted and produced by 1ts students In rev1ew1ng these annual ed1t1ons the growth and de velopment of a school can be traced as it parallels that of the book Hononng th1s Slgfllfl cant landmark the staff of 1959 dedlcates th.1s page to retellmg the story of the frfty years SIGNET hrstory Always a semor productlon tt was not unttl 1912 that the book whrch we now know as the SIGNET was so called The ftrst edrtron publrshed tn 1909 by students of old Central fthen a hxgh schoolp was called THE ECHO and was sold to students for frfty cents At that ttme the staff had frve members ln 1959 erghteen Durlng those early years the book was magaztne lrke ln structure and edrtorral by nature wrth a few group prctures of the classes and clubs and on the llghter srde Jokes a class w1ll hrstory, and prophecy The class of 1914 began the frrst step toward the type of book our students enjoy today In thrs book drvrsron pages evrdenced a breath of arttstrc prxde and an advertrslng secuon bearxng the names of many of the present day advertxsers hrnt that costs were rrsrng as the staff of a rec ord breakmg fourteen strove to make the book brgger and better than ever It IS rnteresttng to note some of the edttonals 1n these early books In an excerpt from the 1915 annual we learn that the cryrng need of Effmgham 15 for more room rn the hrgh school and we propose to be boosters for an enlarged school they also requested an 1mproved busmess Dance Orchestra has met the approval of all those who ltke musrc wrth a swmg Although the depresston years restrrcted a full speed ahead program tt was tn the 30 s that the book began to take on 1ts famrhar appearance It was also durmg thrs t1me that EHS began a program of actrvxtxes whrch through the years have become tradmonal The frrst Homecom mg event took place on December 22 1934, followmg a basketball game whlch we lost by two pornts Madelene Brown was crowned Effrngham s frrst queen One year later the Juruor class held tts ftrst carmval whrch they called the Mardl Gras It was not untll 1938 that we frnd the varsrty team referred to as the Flamrng Hearts Heretofore the team seemed to use the s m bol of the Flymg Phantoms The story of the book also mtrrors the crucxal war years Wrth the shortage of paper the staff altered the book to phamphlet form called frrst the SIGNETTE and then THE SENIOR MEM ORY BOOK Three short books came out each year But after the return to normalacy the SIG NET reappeared rn 1ts hardback cover bearmg tts fxrst theme, The 49 ers Each year has brought new ldeas, rmprovement and one can but wonder what the future holds for the SIGNET We predlct that many of the famrly names w1ll rema1n that soon color wrll be added that some who read thrs wrll see the Centennral Edxuon We the staff of 1959 are happy to be a part of tlus sequence and on the SIGNET S frfueth anmversary we pornt wrth prrde to our 1959 Golden Book . . . . in . .
