E=3 The Spring was a very busy time at EHS with softball and track in season. Coach “Moto” Pile again lead the Tiger baseball team to a game at Busch Stadium. The foreign language program sponsored trips to Europe at Easter including a trip to Russia sponsored by Mr. Joe Symanski. The drama club and director Mrs. Lea Mainer thrilled the school with the Spring production of “Bye Bye Birdie” which started students and teachers. School was on the down hill run toward prom and graduation.

After the Christmas holidays, EHS students returned to their studies. Indoor activities were the best activities for the Winter. Clubs took up lots of spare moments as the language clubs sponsored the “International Dinner”, the student council re-organized, and several dances were held. EHS students were interested in basketball and wrestling. Boys basketball was a favorite but the girl’s team clicked off many victories and drew a large following. Thad Summers lead the wrestling team qualifying for post-season competition and setting a record for most victories. On the national sports scene, the Chicago Bears won the Superbowl behind a strong defense and their “punky QB” Jim McMahon. 12

Perhaps the saddest moment of the school year came on Tuesday, January 28, when the United States Space Shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after liftoff. The entire crew of seven was killed instantly. The astronauts were Francis Sco-bee, Michael Smith, Ronald McNair, Judy Resnik, Ellison Onizuka, Gregory Jarvis, and Christa McAuliffe. Mrs. McAuliffe was to have been the first civilian in space, a teacher in space. Though she was not a teacher from our school we shared her dream, “Reach for the stars”. 14
