The class of 1944 should be congratulated for publishing the Tiger this year. This annual provides a record of the determination of our community to provide for the future through the education of its youth despite the pressure of history's greatest war. Edwardsville has maintained schools for one hundred and twenty-three years, public schools for eighty years, and a high school since 1864. Our school was the second high school in Madison County to be accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Edwardsville was the home of the first territorial governor of Illinois and was the third town to be incorporated in the state. The Educational Policies Commission maintains that “school attendance until graduation is the best contribution to the war effort which school age youth can make. Through this book, tribute is paid to the members of this school who have stayed with their jobs here in spite of other opportunities and to the community which has made it possible for them to do so. 9
