Seminary West Salem, IL 62476 618-456-8851 90 On Tuesday. October 14. the rumors became reality. A majority of the students at E.C.H.S. staged a sit in . They rebelled against what was called an infringement upon their rights It started before first hour with only a few students participating The crowd grew to over 200 students. Principal Wayne Dopke addressed the protesting students saying that consequences would be met if the students didn't return to class. The reprimand would be five detentions, but the students held their ground. Mr Don Smith, science teacher, spoke to the crowd as a friend as well as a teacher. He said the students proved their point and suggested returning to class. The students voted on whether or not to return to class, with a majority voting to go back fifth hour The sit in received much TV. radio, and newspaper coverage The students gave ideas of what they were dissatisfied with and a proposal was written up The proposal was read to the School Board by Student Council President Brian Mewes. The board then delegated certain members to meet with a Student Council committee to reach agreements to satisfy all involved parties.
