Jones ADMINISTRATION It is a great pleasure for me to be able to write a short message to. the students and especially the graduating class of 1986. This is the last issue of the Edwards Central School yearbook and its important that we hold Edwards Central School and all it stands for in a very special place in our hearts. You should never forget the proms, class events, sports, trips, that very special teacher, the frolics, and I could go on and on. You should never forget the past and all of the wonderful memories from there but, now is the time to look forward towards the future. Your life is in the future. You must plan for the future and keep striving to reach your goals. Hard work is the only way you can reach those goals. Good luck to you all and thank you all. The 1985-86 school year has been my first year having the roles of both teacher and adminis- trator. This year has been excit-j ing, challenging, and extremely busy. The year started with the addition of ITV courses and con- cludes with the merger of Edwards and Knox Memorial. I believe that both of these changes will result in expanded programs and opportun- ities for our students, now and for many years to come. Dedication This years 1986 Hornet is dedicated to Mrs. Reichert and the Edwards Central School. Mrs. Reichert arrived at E.C.S. in [1966 as a business teacher. She has I provided 19 years of dedicated service land has been involved in many extra- curricular activities during her tenure at E.C.S. We would like to thank Mrs. I Reichert for her years of dedicated service to both the community and the students lof E.C.S. We would also like to take this {opportunity to wish Mrs. Reichert many I happy years of retirement. The Edwards Central School has| I given us many fulfilling years. We will all cherish our fond I memories as we leave E.C.S. and enter into our new prosperous horizons in our quest for life long learnings. WE'RE THE STUDENTS OF ECS AND TO ALL OF US OUR SCHOOL'S THE BEST IN THIS BUILDING LIES OUR PRIDE AND FOR OUR HORNETS, WE HAVE TRIED TO DO THE BEST, COME OUT ON TOP I HOPE THIS PRIDE WILL NEVER STOP. WE'VE GROWN TO LOVE THIS SMALLTOWN SCHOOL AND IN THE PROCESS WE'VE LEARNED THE RULES. IN THE NEW SCHOOL OUR NAME MAY CHANGE BUT IN OUR HEARTS ARE WHERE THE HORNETS REMAIN. WHEN WE LEAVE OUR EYES WILL FILL WITH TEARS AS WE LOOK BACK ON OUR WONDERFUL YEARS. OUR SPORTS, CLASSES, DANCES, AND FRIENDS IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE IT IS COMING TO AN END. OUR MEMORIES ARE FOND, OUR FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT AS WE PLAY OUR LAST GAME AS THE GREEN WHITE. SOME MAY LAUGH AND SOME MAY CRY BUT THE HORNET SPIRIT WILL NEVER DIE. IT MAY BE A GOOD IDEA, IT MAY BE GOOD FOR US BUT IT IS IN THIS SCHOOL THAT WE'VE PUT OUR TRUST. WHATEVER HAPPENS I WISH YOU THE BEST 1 BUT ALWAYS REMEMBER THE PRIDE OF ECS? BY Mandy Watson TOWN HiJLL HISTORY OF EDWARDS Edwards first settlers were Asa Brayton Jr.-, and his wife Eunice Parsons, Asa Jr. and. his father Asa Sr. came here to work’ on the military road in 1811 and ftere granted 50 acres of land. In 1827 Edwards was an organized town. The original site for Edwards was the island. When George Allan became land agent in 1819 the town began to be settled more rapidly. The first industry in Edwards was a grist mill built by Ora Ehead in l8l4. Before talc and zinc were discovered in Edwards farming and lumbering were the main industries. In 1878 the first commercial talc mine in NY state was opened in Freemansburg, now Talcville. On August 1, 1893 the railroads line opened. The railroad station was very busy in early days. Many things came and went by train. In 1933 the passenger train stopped running. j,,; ji- •II IB! W ••• f- i s ! f i 1 gy 1; Y■’ The town hall was built in 1896. This was the second town hall built in Edwards, The first was built in jI89I but it Durnea in the fire of 189 . Over the years the town hall has housed a barber shop, lawyer's office, public bath, bank, post office, and jail. The upstairs has an auditorium used in the past for public functions., Now the town hall just has.the museum and office forrunning the town. [ Edwards Kaiiroad Station On July 4, 189 1 a fire burned 3‘t buildings. A chimney blaze started and a strong wind carried the fire down Main and Factory streets. After the fire many of the buildings were rebuilt. The hotel that was rebuilt burned in 1970. EDWARDS AFTER 1894 FIRE If iyr-- i-k a 21 i... j i I '..ftf , ' •'. Professional and local plays and movies were also held there. ■ ■ Main Street ca. 1910 The Edwards Hepburn Library was built in 1919. Money for building came from A. Barton Hepburn, former superintendent of Edwards School. The time capsule was buried in the front lawn of the school on May 26, 1976 to be opened in 2001. p r . 'W € C A p C r F'f t ks x 6— -?005- EDUCATION IN EDWARDS Brodie School The first school built was a log cabin. As there were no trained teachers, various people in the community who had some education taught. The Brodie family established on their estate the next school for their family and neighbors. The above picture is the building erected after the time of the Brodie family and is now a private home. EDWARDS HIGH SCHOOL Anyone wanting a high school education had to go to the Wesleyan Seminary in Gouverneur until 1909 when the first Edwards High School was built on East Main Street, 6 h In 1985 an instructional tele- vision tower (ITV) was added to Edwards Central enabling Edwards, Gouverneur, and Harrisville to share teachers for additional- courses. In 1914 the first class grad- uated from Edwards High School. With the exceptions of 1916 and 1919 because of WWI, there has been a graduating cla-ss each year. The Class of 1986 at Edwards Cen- tral School is the 71st graduating class from Edwards community. ITV FIRST QUARTER i C. Arquette, R. Clintsman, j How Is H. Robinson. Row 2s G. Arquette, |A. TEN, NINE, EIGHT,....' The Hornet boys finished the soccer season with an 8-5”! record. Leading the offensive charge this year were Doug Matthews, Kevin Archer, and David Clark. The defense was anchored by all-league goalie Scott Zeller, and halfback Richard Lapiant, and fullbacks Mark Zeller and Robert Webster. Why'd you kick it to me Webster? 45 The ‘Lady Hornets had a tough, challenging year with a five member team. They kept their heads up and never once broke to the pressure of the opposition or their classmates. Their only season win saw k girls on the floor and one injury on the bench. This game was a triumph and reflection of the lady hornets efforts and proved that discouragement may lurk in the shadows, but at least these 5 girls were not quitters. B. Shampine, S. Bullock, B. Other top performers were Bruce Hotaling - 11 points per game and 11 rebounds per game. Also Robert Webster - 7 points per game and 8.9 rebounds per game.
