Go for it! Twisting Tony. Twisting the night away. Go Nurdock go! Where’s the fire hydrant? Now this is the way you do the twist. A rose between two thorns, just twisting away. Hey, I’m the rose around here!

In Memory of Mr. Herman Mayer 1905-1984 When Herman Mayer came to Edwards in 1954, he had experience in teaching, coaching, and ad- ministration. At his first get-acquainted assembly he stated his aim, to make Edwards Central a school to be proud of. He worked toward that goal for eighteen years. He expected orderly and courteous behavior from the students. His rules on rotating classes in order in the cafeteria line, quiet attention at assemblies, and absolute quiet during fire drills were enforced. He ex- pected cooperation from the faculty; in return he gave them support whenever it was needed, and freedom to use whatever methods and materials they wished. The Board of Education found him to be reasonable in his requests and always interested in improving the quality of the school. Mr. Mayer always encouraged field trips which would provide broader understanding or inspiration. In addition to the usual games and concerts, there were trips for dramatics, Future Teachers, and on the first Earth Day, in 1970, a bus took the whole student body, a load at a time, to visit the Edwards water treatment plant. Students were encouraged to meet or compete with other schools in public speaking, math, and spelling. The Scholarship Frolics was a big project each year. Mr. Mayer was overall chairman and expected full cooperation of the faculty in both work and buying tickets. The big World Trade Fair in 1962 was the brain child of James Wagner, social studies teacher, but Mr. Mayer opened the whole school and released all classes for two days. Both faculty and students set up exhibits and guided tours of the many displays, and then dismantled them and returned order. It was good practical education. Mr. Mayer referred to himself as an “organized man.” He felt that more could be accomplished with an organized group than with single effort, and he was active in many organizations, both in the education field and in the community. He held various offices in the United Methodist Church and gave his greatest service in heading the funding for the building program after the fire in 1972. As principal he was always supportive of the AFS program, and after retirement he served as president of the local unit. When teachers and board members retired, Mr. Mayer gave them a tribute, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” We feel that this tribute is most fitting for him.
