1981 Hornet Edwards Central School Trout Lake Street Edwards, New York 13635 Volume XXVII Table of Contents Title Page Table of Contents Dedication Yearbook Staff Staff Sports Organizations Seniors AFS Students Underclassmen Advertising 1 2 3 4 5 11 23 33 48 49 63 2 The dedication for the 1981 Hornet Yearbook goes to the spectators of the activites at E.C.S. Spec- tators play a very important role in school activities. You don’t know what feeling great is like until you’re out on the soccer field, have your team score and just hear the applause and shouting. That’s when you know you can be proud and that they’re proud of you. To be in a parade, hit the judging area and all of a sudden everybody stands up and applauds. You can see out of the corner of your eye and see the familiar, proud faces of the Edwards spectators. This makes you feel the best and know that you’re number one in everybody’s hearts. The first year we came home from the State Fair tired, worn out, and proud we saw flashing lights and thought there had been an accident. When we found out that they really had come to escort us home we were ecstatic and filled with joy. Arriving in town and seeing everybody in the streets and signs saying that we were number one no matter what fills you with an excitement that you’ll never forget. The Edwards basketball team had an improved year this year. The J.V.’s were 11-5 and the Varsity was 6-10. The gym was always filled with spectators who were proud because the team was finally beginning to find victory over some of the other teams. The fans just screamed and yelled at some of the close games and it made you feel good to know that they are behind you all the way. The spectators at Edwards will always be behind us and we would like to thank them from deep within our hearts. We love you all! 1 4 Yearbook 1 Staff Editor: Tracy Whitmarsh Ass’t Editor: Kathy Mullaney Secretary Treasurer: Julie Youngs Layout Committee: Shirley Waugh Pam Zeller Typing Committee Deb Sykes Angie Lanphear Sales Committee: Tammy Bullock Cindy Gotham Ellen Hughes Kim Zeller Reporting Committee: Ken Davison Kathy Mullaney Advisor: David J. The Hornets had a tough defense with 2-year all-star Mike O’Hearn in the nets and 3-year all-star Vernon Davison in the back-field. Ken Davison played line as the third all-star team member, for the third straight year. Although this team lost the first play-off game to Chateaguay in the freezing sleet weather, the Hornets had an improved year and are looking to improve still more next year. The boys would also like to congratulate the girls varsity soccer team for winning the NAC championships. 1. Row 1: B. Davison, S. Zeller, M. Lennox, D. Matthews, M. McCormick. Row 2: R. Jones, T. The girls soccer team finished the regular season with an 8-4-0 record for a second place tie with Clifton-Fine and Herman-DeKalb'. A special play-off for a wild card berth in the sectionals was played against Clifton-Fine and a 1-0 win advanced our girls to the sectionals. The quarter final game against Division III champ Harrisville was perhaps one of the finest games ever witnessed. Edwards was declared a 2-1 winner after 4 regulation quarters, 2 overtime periods, 2 sud- den death overtimes and a 5 man shoot-out. Edwards got by the same semi-final opponent, St. Lawrence Central, 2-1, and then came the game the girls had waited all year for. The Ed- wards girls won the Section X crown after a truly champion- ship game against Hermon-DeKalb. Both teams fought hard, but our girls were a 1-0 victor. The 1981 Edwards Varsity Basketball team finished the regular season tied for fifth place in tough NAC Division III with a record of 6-10. After two complete seasons of winless ways, the Hornets were much improved this year under the leadership of Coach Bruce Tytler. The senior members of the roster include Vernon Davison, Doug Brown, Bill LaPlant, Edwing Jaimes, Reggie Curtis and David McDonald. Team Picture: Row 1: M. Hart, W. LaPlant, E. Jaimes, K. Davison. Row 2: Coach Tytler, D. McDonald, H. Hale, V. Davison, R. Curtis, M. O’Hearn, D. Brown. V arsity Basketball J.V. Basketball Like the varsity, the Edwards JV Basketball team had been a considerable time without a win. This was a year to get back on the winning ways as “Little Hornets” finished the regular season occupying third place with 11-5 record. Hustle and determination seemed to be key elements of this team’s game in their part of tough NAC Division III action. Optimism is high that perhaps this team can return the winning ways of basketball to the Edwards Central School. Team Picture: Row 1: J. Law, J. Mullaney, C. Averill, R. Clintsman, J. Clark, W. With but two seniors, Tracy Whitmarsh and Cindy Gotham on the squad, youth, hustle and enthusiasm will be trying to overshadow the lack of experience. Team picture: Row 1: C. Gotham, T. Bullock, K. Things were somewhat gloomy for the 1980 Baseball squad as the year ended with a 2-6 season record. The team was led in hitting by the “Littlest Hornet,” T.J. LaPlant, with a .333 batting average. Mike O’Hearn was the leading defensive player and Ken Davison the most versatile. With most of the players returning next year, our boys are looking at a more ex- perienced squad and are hoping for a much improved year. 3 Softball In the last season in the Valley League, the Lady Hornets finished the year as league champions. They continued their winning ways in post- season play but the Red Raiders of Massena proved to be too strong for the Hornets in the section I championship game. As Division leader, Ed- wards represented section X in the intersectionals, where they lost to sec- tion VII power Newcombe. The overall record for the year was 9-3. Next year the Hornets should again be strong with a lot of potential coming back. Graduating seniors were Melinda Whitmarsh and Gisele Rushlo and all-star selections were Chrissy Bullock, Tammy Bullock, Cindy Gotham and Pam Zeller. 1. Sitting: K. Mullaney, M. Whitmarsh, N. The Hornets proved their marching excellence on two occasions. One of these first place wins was at the Jefferson County Fair. Losing by fractions of points, the Hornets took four second place positions. At the New York State Fair, ECS placed sixth, while our Drum Major Cy Waugh, placed first in the state. The Hornets also were invited, and performed at the largest Fourth of July celebration in New York State, at Oswego. 1. Band: Row 1: L. Hughes, V. Zeller, R. Shear, D. Gotham, R. Stoffel, V. Zeller. My par- ents are psychologists. My family at home consists of four people, my parents, my two year old sister and me. My school in Germany is much bigger than Edwards Central School but I prefer small schools. I am enjoying my stay in Edwards, espe- cially with the Antwines, my host family, who are the perfect family for me. We like to do a lot of outdoor activities such as hunting, fish- ing and cross-country skiing. I would like to thank AFS for this wonder- ful opportunity that it has given me. AFS STUDENTS EDWING My name is Edwing Manuel Jaimes. I come from Bucara- manga, Colombia, a city of 500,000 people. It’s known as the “city of parks and of cordiality.” I am very grateful to the Edwards AFS Chapter for the opportunity of this experience. In Edwards, I am living with Cliff and Mabel Davison. I have a big family here with six brothers, Cliff, Jeff, Vernon, Kenny, Billy, Bryan and four sisters, Sheree, Linda, Shelly and Mabel. They are a close family and I like them. Here I have had a good time and have learned much about the cus- toms of American people. I am now looking forward to see the snow. I would like to tell you about my family in Colombia. My father, Jose Jaimes, is an architect and my mother, Graciela de Jaimes, is a housewife and also makes clothing to sell. She does this at home. I have two brothers, Jose Raul is an engi- neer, and Jesus Ariosto is an architect student, both in Bucara- manga. I have two sisters, too. Luz is a housewife, and Gladys is a senior high school student. U nderclassmen Grade 11 1. D. Weir, T. Jackson, M. O’Hearn, J, Hawn, K. Whitford, 2. Standing: M. Hopkinson, S. Averill.
