Under the direction of Mr. James Fer- ris, Mr. Robin Archer, and Mr. Daniel Mosher, the band once again proved their ability against much larger bands from schools all over the state. Competing eleven times, they were first on six occasions. They finished a very close second place at the Seaway Festival. At the St. Lawrence County Fair the band not only took top honors, but also won the coveted Isabella Peck award and the flags and rifles won the Marjorie Peck award. 1. Row 1: M. Archer, K. I am the son of Lennie and Patricia Zeller and the brother of Wesley Zeller. Like you know, I come from the “Old World” and since I arrived at Edwards in August, I have had a very good time. I would like to tell you a little bit about my family back home in France. My father, Jose Lopez, is a carpenter for a big com- pany. My mother, Josephine, is a housewife. I have two sisters still in school, Isabelle who is 11 years old, and Alice, who is 16 years old. Another sister Marie, who is 20 years old, is working in a bookstore. She is a graduate like my brother Jose who is work- ing as a pipefitter for another company. We all live in a big city in the south of France called Toulouse, with a population of 500,000 people. You people of this small town are very nice to me and I appreciate that. I enjoy a lot of new activities: soccer, bowling, hunting, fishing, trapping, “Bingo,” snow, your woods and the maple syrup. I won’t forget you nor will I forget the pretty girls of Edwards. “Merci beau- coup.” “Thank you very much.” Robert Lopez CYRIL WAUGH This summer I lived in Santpoort-Noord, Netherlands. The Netherlands is north of France and borders West Germany. I stayed with the family Tibboel. They made me feel very much at home. My father was a Dutch Exterminator (Mortician) and my mother was a part-time student. I had two host brothers, Henk, age 16, and Hans, age 14, and a host sister Hanny. While in the Netherlands I learned a lot about windmills, dikes, and some knowledge of World War II. I traveled to differ- ent areas learning names, places, happenings, and the language. I thank the Edwards A.F.S. Chapter and the community for their support for a tremendous experience which will last a life- time. DEDICATION This year’s Hornet is dedicated to three former teachers who have guided us through many of our years at our beloved Edwards Central School, Mrs. Manie Hurley, Mrs. Mary Noble, and Mrs. Katheryn Fuller. Mrs. Hurley attended the State University of New York at Potsdam and taught at Harrisville and the Talcville schools before coming to Edwards in 1957. Mrs. Noble went to the State University of New York at Pots- dam and taught in three different rural school districts in the area before coming to Edwards Central in 1958. Mrs. Fuller was educated at Keuka College and the St. Law- rence University, and taught at Hermon before coming to Edwards, where she taught two or more generations of local families. We thank you for your many years of help and guidance throughout our educational life here at Edwards. 1. Mrs. Noble and Mrs. Fuller enjoying a snack with the Home Economics class. 2. After starting with a dismal 1-2 record, the Hornets regrouped and won their next five games to earn first place honors with a record of 6-2. This marked the fourth consecutive year in which the girls entered the sectional play-offs and the quarter-finals began against Colton-Pierrepont. A winning score of 14-5 pitted Edwards against Har- risville in the semi-finals. After a 9-5 victory, Edwards, for the third straight year, was to face the Ogdensburg Blue Devils. A Section X crown was not to be, as the girls lost a tough 6-5 decision. But with an overall record of 8-3, the Edwards girls were again invited to represent Section X, Class D, in intersectional competition against Section VII. 1. Left to right: Coach Thompson, T. Get down, Cindy. BOYS’ BASEBALL The Hornet baseball squad faced a tough Valley League schedule, and came out with an overall record of 2 wins and 6 losses. The athletic banquet saw the acknowledgement of Ken Davison as the leading pitcher, Mitch Wood as the best hitter, and Mike O’Hearn as the leading fielder. 1. Front: D. Smith, K. Davison, V. Davison, M. Wood, D. Weir. Back: K. McGill, J. Allen, D. Sykes, H. Hale, M. O’Hearn, Coach Nindl, J. Sternisha, D. Freeman, W. LaPlant, L. Bullock. 2. Got- cha!!! 3. Gruntin’ and groanin’. 4. Do you think there’s hope? 5. Swan dive. 37 This year the girls’ soccer team posted a 4-4 record, good enough for a third place finish in the Valley League. In that only five juniors and two seniors were on the roster, the squad sported a lot of youth. And because of this “building” year, the prospects for a first place champi- onship for next fall look promising. This experience keyed with addi- tional new prospects from the eighth grade should make for an excit- ing 1980 season. As a result of selections by the opposing coaches, Melinda Whit- marsh, Cindy Gotham and Chrissy Bullock were selected to the Valley League All-Star team. 1. Front: T. Bullock, B. Bullock. Row 1: T. GIRLS’ SOCCER 38 BOYS’ SOCCER The Valley League schedule was a rough one, and the boys managed to fight their way to a split record of 4-4. The Hornets were led by Ken Davison, with 11 goals and 6 assists, Vernon Davison and Mitch Wood. With the loss of only four seniors, Dennis Freeman, Mitch Wood, Robert Lopez and Eugene Mullaney, the Hornets expect to march on to another good, if not better season next year. 1. Row I: W.
