Mr. Ferris received his Bachelor of Music degree from the State University of Fredonia, afterwhich he traveled throughout Europe with the U.S. Army band as an assistant conductor. After leaving the army, Mr. Ferris went back to Fredonia and conducted in 1973 and '74. Since 1975, Mr. Ferris has lived in Ed- wards with his wife, Sue and their cocker span- iel, Doc. Sue Ferris is a remedial math teacher at E.C.S. Mr. Ferris, when not conducting band lessons, enjoys his hobbies of furniture restoration and photography. Thank you Mr. Ferris, for your help inmaking our band one of the best in the state. AFS Hiromi Hiromi Okada Konnichiwa! (means hello) My name is Hiromi Okada. I am the daughter of Mike ana Celene Duffy. I'm from Nippon (means Japan in Japanese). Your natural view is much different from my area's. I love to go cutting wood, hunting, or fishing with a canoe. Just beautiful! At first, I was so surprised at new customs that seemed strange. But after learning your way, I can understand you better. Also, many people on each side, Japan and the United States, have been meeting each other through me. A.F.S. is great. It let me meet a lot of people who have different customs, cultures, and languages, and think about myself as a human being. I am proud of Edwards for joining such a nice organization. Next time, I'll be back here with my husband! And I want you to come to my country! Thank you very much for taking care of me. 4 AFS weekend On the week-end of October 20, 21, and 22, 1978, the Edwards chapter of American Field Service hosted the annual AFS week-end. AFS students from North country schools took part, along with their american host students. There were also a number of northern New York students involved who had spent last summer abroad. They spent the week-end with various Edwards families, shared stories of their AFS experiences, and visited north country attractions. Some of the students who participated are shown in the photograph above. AFS students are indicated in parentheses with their home country and host school, host students are indicated with their home school, and American students are indicated with their home school and country they visited last summer. Summer marching band While the rest of us were on summer vacation, the Edwards Central march- ing band, under the direction of Mr. Ferris, has been very busy traveling all over St. Lawrence County, New York State, and parts of Canada, in various parades. Out of nine competitions, they took first place five times. The first place victories include the Seaway Festival and the St. Lawrence County Fair At the State Fair the band came in tenth, but Drum Major Cyri I Waugh came in second as he also did at the County Fair. The school and everyone in the community is very proud of the accomplish- ments of the band. Congratulations go to Mr. Ferris and all of the band members as well as to Special Advisors: Mrs. Ferris, Betsy Webb, and assistant Cindy Lanphear. 8 Flag Team Front: Angie Lanphear; Back: Becky Wood, Donna Thornton, Jayne Planty Color Guard Rob Clintsman, Sharon Paro, Jim Mullaney Rifle Team Back: Shirley Waugh Sue Averi 11 Michelle Archer Front: Kathy Mullaney Lisa Bowman Natalie Dean Drum Major Cyril Waugh Banner Sherri Oatman Beth Miller 9 Row 1: J. This loss marked only the first in 3 years of play, compiling a 27-1 record, which includ- ed a 25 consecutive game winning streak. The Hornets entered the play-offs with a game against Morristown and won 12-5. A 21-8 victory in the semi-finals against Colton-Pierrepont brought our girls up against the Blue Devils of Ogdensourg, for the second straight year. Again, Edwards missed the section x crown losing 17-9, but with many key players returning for the '79 season, the lady Hornets should be in the competition again. 34 ♦ Front: D. Weir. Kneel- ing: V. GIRLS’ SOCCER This was the first year for the newly formed Val ley League composed of Edwards, Morristown, Heuvel- ton, Lisbon, and Hammond. Our girls finished in first place with a 6-1-1 record. Their only loss came at the hands of Morristown by a 1-0 score. That loss ended a three year, 26 consecutive game winning streak. The banner they won as a result of this league victory is now displayed in the E.C.S. gym. In the opening game of the play-offs, we took a quick 2-0 lead, but our Saranac Lake opponents came back to win it in overtime, 3-2. Four girls were selected by the opposing coaches to represent Edwards on the Valley League All- Star team. They were Margaret Davis, Shelly Davison, Donna Dinley, and Melinda Whitmarsh.
