Earning money for the senior trip 10 Hamish HAMISH My name is Hamish McLeod and I live in Brisbane, Austra- ilia. Brisbane has a population of approximately 950,000, and is the capital city of the state of Queensland. My father is a mining engineer and my mother is a housewife. I have one elder brother, an elder sister, and a younger sister. Being an exchange student is such a rewarding experience, and it is difficult to convey all that I have learned throughout this year. I would encourage anyone interested to participate in this program, as the gains are practically immeasurable. My sincerest thanks must go to the Webb family, who have opened their home for me, and accepted me as one of their own. I would also like to thank the Edwards AFS chapter, all the teachers at ECS, and all the other people in the community. Finally, I would like to thank all the students at ECS. I will be taking home so very many happy memories. I would sincerely hope that anyone visiting AustraiIia could come and visit me. AFS EXCHANGE STUDENTS TURKIKE I lived in a country that was at the border between Europe and Asia. Turkey had many different customs and beliefs. The city which I lived in was Aydin, with approximately 60,000 people. The Ulvi Akin family made me feel like a part of their family. I also lived in another city, Izmir, for 3-4 weeks. This city is a seaport and is larger and more modern than Aydin. My father, Ulvi, is an engineer at a milk homogenizing plant and my mother, Urksel, is a housewife. I have two sisters. Funda and Aysun, and a brother, Allaattin. I learned a great deal about religious beliefs, customs, and language. The Turkish language has many word sentences such as: Bismillahirrahmanirrahim, which means In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful. AFS has brought a lot of knowdedge and many great experi- ences in to my life. I'll never forget my adventure and want to thank the Edwards AFS chapter, AFS International, and my family here in Edwards. 11 Donna Thornton 1 Marty Conklin 2 Harold Youngs 3 Debbie Jones 4 Melissa Whitmarsh 5 Sheri Jones 6 Hamish McLeod 7 Michele Rushlo 8 Terry McDonald 9 Mike Davis 10 Ina Sloan 11 Jeff Cassidy 12 Glenn Sternisha 13 Deb Roberts 12 1 Lynette Annette Brassard 2 Clay Bressette 3 Robin Maracle 4 Cathy Minckler 5 Roxanne Gagnon 6 Donna Thornton 7 Suzanne Curtis 8 Kevin Gagnon 9 Kathleen McFerran 10 Paul Skeldon 11 Wayne Gagnon 12 Clara Ashley 13 Herb Waugh 14 Brent Brian Hurley 13 Most Organized Jeff and Kathleen Most Popular Mike and Annette Class Flirts Mike and Annette Most Musical Jeff and Kathleen Most Congenial Hamish and Lynette Lynette and Wayne Best Sports Best Looking Cathy and Mike M ost Athletic Lynette and Brian H A L L 0 F F A M E Most Likely To Succeed Kathleen and Jeff Most Studious Jeff and Kathleen Class Clowns Kevin and Annette Hey Brian, you look like you could use some Gatorade! GIRLS’ SOFTBALL The 1977 Edwards girls' softball team was the division II East champion with a 10-0-0 record. This was the second consecutive year with an undefeated regular season record. In post season play, they beat Heuvelton in the quarter-finals with an 11-3 score, and then bested Knox-Memorial of Russell in the semi-finals by a 13-12 tally. Against Ogdensburg in the finals, the Hornets out hit their opponents, but lost a heart-breaker, 5-4. Their over- all record was 12-1. All-Star selections included Linda and Shelly Davison. All-Star form Sitting: B. Muilaney, J. Allen, D. Sykes, T. Zaluski, C. Paro, J.B. Averi 11, P. Skeldon Standing: V. Davison, A. Webb, L. Bullock, P. McFerran, Coach Nindl, M. Wood, J. Lapiant, H. Barr GIRLS’ SOCCER Why is the man in the back row smiling? That was the question the newspaper asked. But really they all have good reason to be smiling because the Hornets successfully defended their division crown by compiling a 12-0-0 regular season record. Scoring a 5-4 quarter-final victory over Massena, the largest school in Section X, the girls advanced to play Colton in their most ex- citing game of the year. The 5-4 Edwards semi-final victory wasn't decided until a Hornet goal was scored with only 3 sec- onds remaining in regulation time. As the final buzzer sounded in the Championship game against division I foe, Saranac Lake, the Hornets left the field with a 3-0 victory, a season record of 15-0-0, and the right to call themselves number 1 in sec- tion X. 36 BOYS’ SOCCER Row 1: H. Webb, B. Hurley, L. Bullock, M. Davis, G. Sternisha, P. Skeldon, H. Waugh The boys' soccer team was sparked by the hustle and enthusiasm of Austrailian exchange student Hamish McLeod. Hamish was selected to the All-league second team. An early season injury to Brian Hurley forced him to play goalie where he did creditable work. Sen- iors Herb Waugh, Glenn Sternisha, and Mike Davis will be missed next year. Coach Nindl will have the nucleus of his offense returning as Mitch Wood, Vernon and Kenny Davison, along with Duane Sykes, Barry Mullaney, and Jimmy Allen back for another season. 37 BOYS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL Front: H. On Thursday the twenty-sixth of January, Edwards Central School received a three day visit from a United States Marine Corps reserve battalion, K - Company, from Memphis, Tennessee. The men were taking part in Fort Drum's cold weather training program. Empire Glacier. Although the purpose of their visit was a cold weather training session, the ex- treme cold kept the men inside for most of the three days. However, during this time the men were able to give our students demonstrations on military equipment, clothing, and weapons. They even had some time to play some basketball. The following photographs show some of ' the highlights of their stay. They demonstrated their weapons .... and their other equipment. The sargent tried to recruit future mar- ines ........
