The girls of ECS had a very successful soccer season this year under the guidance of Coach Don Thompson, After a slow start, hard work and determination brought them back to a final record of 6-2-2, good enough for second place in the Northern Athletic Conference D-division. A 2-0 victory in the semi-finals over Saranac Lake and a 2-1 victory over Colton-Pierrepont Central School in the sectionals brought the Section X trophy home to Edwards. Spirit and morale were always high, and even under pressure or behind, the girls would not slack off. Special recognition should go to NAC All- Star Team members Shelly Davison, Donna Finley, Annette Brassard, Sheree Davison, and Linda Davison. The students, faculty, and the entire community can be proud of the accom- plishment of their girls this year. Round 'em up! Talk about high stepping! 51 ROW 1: M. LaPlante, P. Hurley, M. Whitmarsh, L. Brassard, M. Davis, S. Waugh, M. Rushlo. ROW 2: Mrs. Farnsworth, K. Hart, D. Thornton, M. Austin, L. Davison, M. Whitmarsh, R. Cole, A. Brassard, J. Ferry, C. Minckler. Under the skillful coaching of Mrs. Farns- worth, the softball team captured second place in the C-D division of the Northern Athletic Conference. Sue Waugh and Annette Brassard were named to the All Star Team; Synette Brassard and Rosie Cole to the second team; Mary Austin and Linda Davison received honorable mention. Family portrait. Edwards joined the se- lect circle of division champions in the North- ern Baseball Conference by clinching the D divi- sion title with a 5-1 win over Parishville. The win earned Edwards the division crown consum- ating two straight years of success on the dia- mond for John Nindl- coached teams. The Hornets had only two hits in the game but one was a two-run double by Mike Roberts. Alton Bishop hurled the win for the Hornets. ROW 1: A. Bishop, T. McFerran, P. McFerran, E. Waugh, G. Minckler, A„ Webb. ROW 2: M Whitmarsh, T. Hartley, J. Averill, Mr. Nindl, S. Brassard, M. Roberts, J. Averill, H. Waugh. ! ?!! I can even do it with my eyes closed! ROW 1: V. Davison, D. McDonald, M. Under the leadership of Coach Nindl, the soccer team finished in fourth place in the C-D division. Their overall record was six wins, seven losses, and three ties. They faced Madrid-Waddington in the first round of the playoffs and lost 5-1. All League team members were: Alton Bishop, first team; Tom McFerran and Rick Peck, second team. If I told you guys once. I've told you guys a hundred times. To live in a country as I lived with the Miceli family in Italy, is without a doubt, the best way to learn about it's people and customs. I discovered many different cultures by traveling in Italy and living in Rome. Most of the summer we lived on Giglio, a small island in the Mediterranean. The Americans Abroad Program did so much for me. I learned that if we reach out and try to understand each other that people can be warm and understanding wherever we go. I was able to look at America in a way which gave me a ques- tioning mind and a will to find the answers. I hope that the Edwards AFS Chapter can keep doing as well as it has in the past, and that in the future someone else will be as fortunate as I was to have a summer abroad. Grazie di tutto! Martha Dodds My name is Frieder Bertele and I live at Ravensburg in West Germany. I have one younger sister. My mother works part time in a jeWelry shop and my father is a bookkeeper in the city office. During my year at Edwards, I learned to live with a family in a different community in a different country. I am especially glad that I spent a year in the U. S.A. during the Bicentenial. All this will be an experience I will never forget. A. F. S. has given me a better understanding of peace, love and friendship in the world. Thanks to all the people who made it possible for me to come over here, especially the James McFerran family. They made my year very happy and I am very thankful and grateful. I also want to thank the teachers of ECS for their help. And finally to AFS, Edwards Comminity, and the students of E CS, especially the seniors. My home is open for everyone who is coming to Germany. 56 This year Edwards was fortunate to get our new band director, Mr. James Ferris. He graduated from Fredonia State University with a B. M. degree in 1970. With his help and with practice, patience, and perspiration , we are getting renewed interest and enthusiasm. The following is a quote from Mr. Ferris: The satisfaction of performing to the best of ones ability, and the knowledge obtained in the process, can only lead to a true understanding and appreciation of the musical arts.
