She completed her high school education at Clayton Central School in 1962. She graduated from the State University of New York at Brockport in 1956. She came directly to Edwards to begin her teach- ing career. To all of the girls at ECS this year, gym class means Miss Carter. It has been one of the most enjoyable classes we’ve ever taken, and it won’t be the same without her. Not only has Miss Carter made our Physical Education Department one of which we can be proud, but she also organized the Girls Athletic Association, a club which most of the girls of ECS are proud to be members of. Miss Carter has worked hard to have successful intramural sports and also competition with other schools. And so to you, Miss Carter, with great appreciation, we dedicate the ’68 Hornet. In order to be in the Varsity Club, boys must earn a letter then additional merits may be earned once in the organiza- tion. Girls are allowed to join GAA in 7th grade and earn letters, trophies, etc. . . .once they are in the organization. The highest award given for more active girls who have earned 4,000 points is a GAA letter sweater. These clubs give boys and girls a chance to participate in active sports and promote sportsmanship. The more active boys who participate in all sports achieve a jacket. For every sport a boy participates in he receives a letter “E” at the end of the year. I am a Brazilian girl who has always dreamed of coming to the United States. One day I heard my friends talking about the American Field Service, then I saw the possibility of coming sooner than I had dreamed. I applied to the AFS in August, 1966. After some tests and interviews, I received the result: I had al- ready passed in the Natal, Brazil, (my home town), chapter of the AFS, but that was not all. I had to wait for the results from the AFS central in Brazil and the AFS central in the United States. Then came the longest months in my life. I waited from August 1966 to May 1967. In may I heard about Edwards and the Dodds family for the first time. I had gotten my AFS scholarship. I could not believe that my dream of so many years was soon to become true. In my American community of Edwards I believe I have had the happiest year of my life. Sooner or later, it doesn’t mat- ter about the changes in myself or in the community, I’ll come back. Thanks to the Dodds family Thanks Edwards Central Thanks Edwards Thanks AFS AFS The Edwards Chapter of the American Field Service was organized in 1962 through the joint efforts of the PTA, The Teachers Association, and the World Fair Committee. These organizations, headed by Dorothy Dodds, Ruth Barraford, James Wagner and also Faye Pratt, sponsored a World Trade Fair in May 1962 to raise money to start the program. Over 5,000 people attended the Fair and the program was off to a successful start. Our first exchange student came in the 62-63 school year. He was Ilhan Ugarel from Turkey. Ilhan is now studying in Berkeley in California, having graduated from the University of Ankara, Turkey, with high honors. The next year we had Ernesto Gallardo from the Philippines, who is in his fourth year of Pre-Med. studies at the University of the Philippines. In 64-65 Maria Baker was with us from Australia. She is presently a junior at Monash University in Armadale, Australia. Pamela Catousse was next, from the Latin American country Guatemala. Pam is now employed as a secretary for her father in Guatemala. Last year, 66-67, Charas Ubol came from Thailand. He is now in Songkhla Teachers College in Thailand. This year Bernadete Bezerra from Brazil is here, and when she goes home she plans to study Engineering. The AFS has enriched the lives of everyone in Edwards, especially the families who have hosted the students. Host Families have been the Schryers, the Dodds, the Kirkbrides, the Cassidys, and the Simmons. We have be- come acquainted with these and many other students from foreign lands through AFS weekends and student visitors each year. This year the officers of the AFS committee are: President, Miss Zelma Bancroft, Vice-President Mrs. Katheryn Fuller, Secretary, Mrs. Marge Dier, Treasurer John Schryer; American Abroad Chairman Mrs. Simmons, Publicity Chairman, Mr. Paul Juckett, Homes Co-ordination, Mrs. Thelma Bullock, and Student Representative Margie Fuller. In closing, we should all remember the AFS motto, “WALK TOGETHER, TALK TOGETHER, O YE PEOPLE OF THE EARTH; THEN AND ONLY THEN SHALL YE FIND PEACE’’ Row 1: J. Dodds, B. Noble, P. Hall, D. Gagnon, R. The Edwards Central School Band is an organization which all its members can be proud of, and our ’67 season was one of the best we’ve ever had. In the spring our direc- tor, Mr. Smith, and the Select Band worked hard together preparing for the NYSSMA Contest, and were rewarded with an A rating in grade 5. In July Mr. Smith turned the band over to Glenn G. Goodale, an alumnus of the band, who became our sum- mer marching director. Through bi-weekly practice and strict attention to detail we became a spirited and impres- sive group. Our first triumph was winning the trophy shown below for being the best all-around band at the Ogdensburg Seaway Festival. From then on we marched quite often, winning 5 firsts and one second. Our major objective was the State Fair, where 42 bands were compet- ing. In spite of the fact that this was our first experience with the meticulous Fair judges and we were one of the smaller bands, we placed sixteenth, again topping our Knox rivals who were twenty-first. This fall we sent 13 players to All District and 4 to Area All State band. We are already planning a great ’68 with a Mid-Winter Concert in May and another A-5 at Contest. We’re not neglecting the marching band either, we are wag- ing a winning campaign for new summer uniforms. Last year was good, but this year is bound to be better! POM-POM GIRLS—Row 1: S. Soper, M.
