He completed his high school education at Gouverneur High School. He graduated from Ithaca College and later studied music at Queen’s Teach- er’s College in North Carolina, Syracuse University, and the State University College at Potsdam. Not only has Mr. Smith made our Instrumental Music department one of which we can be proud but he has also helped to institute in our school, two very important student organizations, the National Honor Society and the Student Government. Another of our annual projects is selling popcorn at the home basketball games. We also play other schools in soccer, basketball and volleyball. At the end of our soccer season, the girls had only one loss. W e have a point system set up so that everyone receives points and awards for the sports they partici- pate in throughout the year. After a person has re- ceived 4000 points, she is awarded a GAA sweater. This is the highest award given in our organization. It is a great honor for the girls who receive their sweaters and also an honor for the GAA to have its girls receiving such an award. Ilhan Ugurel, from Turkey, was our first student in 1962-63. The following year, 1963-64, we had with us Ernesto Gallardo from the Philippines. Last year we were very fortunate to have with us a girl, Maree Baker from Australia. Again, we have a girl from Guatemala - Pam Cattousse. Pam was born on December 28, 1948, in British Honduras. She came to us from Guatemala City, the capital of Guatemala. Pam enjoys life in the U.S. and in Edwards very much. The students, the faculty, and all the people of Edwards wish her the best of everything as she goes through life. 48
