On May 26, 1946, I saw my first light of the world. My dear parents are Mr. and Mrs. Clotildo Gallardo. My hometown, Mambajao, is one of the five towns of Camiguin Is. which is at the north- ern tip of Mindanao. This town has a volcano, Mt. Hibok-hibok. It erupted three times. The third time, in 1951, was the most terrible one. I can remember it well. I thought that it shook the whole world. Two villages were buried underground and hundreds of people died, but now you can see how peaceful the town is. The people live contentedly reaping the fruits from the fertility of the ground due to the eruption. The average temperature of my place goes up to 105 degrees F., 60 is really cold for us. I have 2 brothers and 3 sisters, Antonio, Rogelio, Aurelina, Fely M Marie, Cheryll. I am the second oldest. The first three are boys and then three girls. I am amused by some old folks saying it is a lucky combination. After the graduation here in Edwards my year of stay in this friendly town of wonderful people will come to an end physically, but not mentally. This place will always remain in memory till death do us part . This year is a great benefit for me. First of all I will be knowing lots of things of this country which aren't contained in the textbooks, and further more I will know better the people who make up this powerful nation. I will have lots of practice with my English which will help me in my further studies. I really miss my family and friends, but I am still happy because people here understood me, my teachers and classmates did their best to make me feel at home, even if the climates bother me, and I have a wonderful American family who are very dear to me. I think the American Field Service achieved its goal of promoting international peace and friendship. I understood more about the countries of all A. F. S. foreign students. I can't help but praise the American people who started this. My country has great respect for this nation, not of its missiles, but of its goal to promote peace. I hope and always pray that in the future there will be a complete peace and harmony among men. We have enjoyed very much having Ernie with us this year, and we hope we have made him feel at home. We will always remember his warm smile and pleasant ways. 30
