WHO AM I? ZIYA ILHAN UGUREL (SMILEY) My story stated on June 11, 1944 as I was born to the Ugurel family as their first child. My parents wanted people to call me Ilhan to which my grandparents wanted the name Ziya. So I became Ziya Ilhan Ugurel. My father was a grocer then and my mother a primary school teacher who has start a career in a nearby village. By the time she was appointed to a larger town I was five and had a small brother whom we lost the same year. When it was time for me to start school my mother was in her seventh year of village teaching and I started my educa- tion in a typical village school. There came a new brother for me. I was doing very well in school and I seemed to like this new and interesting world of knowledge better than sitting a- round the house and playing. Our hometown Konya, is the steppe country on the Anatolian Plateau, where all the Ugurels were born and Lived. I graduated from the five-year primary school there and started Junior High School. Although the subjects were much harder I was very much interested in all of them especially the sciences and English which I found worth learning. Every single one of my report cards were full of remarkable results which drove me into the last stage in secondary education, the senior high. There three years passed like nothing and by the end of June 1962 I stood on the highest spot in Konya with a High School diploma in my one hand and an announcement letter from the American Field Service in the other, plunged into a mixed feeling of extreme happiness, hard-to explain sorrow and intox- icating excitement together with a little fear. There I stood at the end of an eleven-year hardwork marathon thinking about my coming year in Edwards, in a town in New York which I couldn’t find on the map, and years which will follow it. That was the first time I felt that I was completely responsible for myself. The events followed each other after that and brought me to the present time, I know that the day I left Turkey was left months behind but I feel as if it was yesterday or the day before. Konya today is the seventh largest city in Turkey with a population of 150, 000. It is a very old city and goes back to the period of Romans when it used to be called Ikoniam.
