Text from Pages 1 - 56 of the 1955 volume:

WHY THE HORNET ? Upon hearing the name of our yearbook — The Hornet — for the first time, many people ask why that name was chosen. We are attempting to explain the meaning of Hornet as well as give a brief history of it. The word hornet is the Anglo-Saxon form of the word •hyrnet which means wasp. The hornet is a large social wasp which can in- flict a sharp sting. To live up to this meaning, those who work on the publications of the Hornet feel that the name should be changed to tie in with our athletics, since they have inflicted a sharp sting in their accomplishments in the past. Since 1952, Edwards Central students have not undertaken the publication of a yearbook. Grown as the school has within the past few years, we students feel that such a book is a necessity. We on the publication staff have worked hard to produce a book that would satisfy the students. The revival of this tradition is just an experiment, which, if successful, will lead to its be- coming a permanent institution. That is what we hope for. If we of the staff can say that we have been instrumental in the re-estab- lishment of this custom, we will retire to the status of alumni contented with the knowledge that we have made a lasting contribu- tion to the school. 1 MISS BERNICE McGrILL 1 To Miss McGill whose ready smile, unfailing kindness, and co-opera- tion have made her everyone s friend, we dedicate the HORNET of 1955. Through her classes and through her personality, she has impress- ed upon our minds the virtures of living not only in school but al- so in everyday life. Dedication Table of Contents Foreword In the HORNET of 1955 we have attempted to present a realistic representation of life at Edwards Central School. It is our hope that in years to come these pages will recreate in the mind of someone a few of the details of the past school year. We realize that a great deal of this volume is devoted to little things-the names, the faces, the incidents-whleh combine to form the picture of our school year. If we have succeeded In some way in bringing a little happiness into the life of just one per- son then the HORNET of 1955 will have been a success. C. S. The faces were all new to me, and I seemed very much a stranger until I heard a voice ring out, Where do you think you’re going? I turned to see who it was and found myself once again face to face with that guardian of the halls, our friend and adviser, Mr. Robert Brown, I told him that I had returned to see how the old school was getting on and asked him if he had heard anything from the old gang, the class of ’55. He smiled and replied, Yes, and they are getting into just as much mis- chief as everl We strolled down the hall and sat doim on the bench across from the office; and as many happy memories drifted through my mind, he told me all he had heard of the class of ’55.I gathered the following from what he related to me. Mrs. James Todd, the former Miss Sandra Allen is the new girls’ ath- letic director at the University of Southern California. Her husband Is head basketball coach there. Harold Austin is teaching Adult Education (SHOP) at E. C. S. Margaret Cole married a surgeon. She has her RN and uses her knowledge and skill in his office. Carol Porter is married and lives at Gouverneur. She owns exclu- sive furniture store there. Keith Puller may be seen on out- door posters advertising Pepsodent’s Smile of Beauty . Keitha Zeller saleslady, selling eting foods. Lillian Thompson is a well known figure in the Land of Stars. Her last picture was Life in the Locker Room, or Who’s Combing My Hair. It was re- leased through Atomic Pictures, Inc. Kathryn Hurley is still as love- ly as ever. And............Patrick Hurley is still a batchelor. Henry Waugh, having . graduated from Cornell, is an expert on animal husbandry. Dawn Puller owns an exclusive women’s shop on Fifth Avenue, and the shop features clothes designed by Jean Chapin. The latest style is Jeans Jaunty Jerkingsuits. Russell Clintsman is mining talc at TALKville. Edward Sullivan was recently e- lected president of the National Farm Association. Besides being a well- known farmer, Ezra is known for his developments of fertilizer. Frederick Archer is running a rocket express to the moon. Mars, Jupiter, and Venus. The time flew by, and I was soon forced to bid Mr. Brown farewell, but as I hurried down the steps I saw him shake his head as he mumbled softly, I wonder what she’s up to now. 14 is a traveling cosmetics and di- ANNETTE SYKES, Class Prophet. Margaret Cole and Janet Boni guided the editing of this yearbook. Harold Austin headed the production staff, assisted by Alice Brown, Patricia Mullaney, Donna Sabourin, and Louis Uruburu. The adver- tising staff was headed by Sandra Allen, without whose work this book would not have been possible. Collecting money for the subscriptions were Carol Porter and Annette Sykes. As this book goes to press the Hornets have won the second game in the semifinals defeating the Brushton five. The varsity will play St. Lawrence Central in their next and final game to seek their third straight Section 10 title. 33 First row: M. Goodale, B. Sloan, P. Hurley, H. Waugh, B. French. Under the direction of Coach Earl Fletcher the squad pow- ered its way to win over half of their games. Its fine record, great sportman- ship, and its desire to win are unforgetable. At the start of the season, because there were three lettermen lost, the power of the Ed- wards squad was underesti- mated. Predictions were for the team to win only one-half of their games Several of the games were very hard-fought with Ed- wards emerging the victor only after a long and diffi- cult battle. il 34 Classroom Scenes BUSINESS HOMEMAKING MATHEMATICS 35 PHYSICAL EDUCATION 37 ADULT EDUCATION 38 Horae Nursing r ADULT EDUCATION 39 Boosters GERTRUDE HALL ANNETTE SYKES HAROLD JONES ETHEL WOOD HAZEL RUSHLO CLARENCE GIVEN LAWRENCE MORGAN MR.
