Home Economics Music CENTRALIZATION After years of effort and frustration Centralization was actually under way when on May 11, Lewis A. Wilson, act- ing commissioner of Education sent the formal layout of a proposed central school district made up of all the districts in the town of Edwards. Some of these districts include parts of the towns of Hermon, Russell and Fine. Then notices were posted for a special school meeting to be held on June 9, 1948 at 11:00 A.M. The voters of the proposed central district were to vote upon the organization of a central school district in accordance with the pro- visions of article 37 of the Education Law. The meeting was called to order by Chauncy Goodberry and the chairman, Harrison Lumley was elected who immediately took charge of the meeting. The following were elected to serve during this meeting: Vice-Chairman, Arnold Dean; Clerk, Hazel Ingraham; Assistant Clerks of the meeting, Mary Perrin, Phyllis Lumley, Mildred Good- heart, Eleanor Brown, Oneta Boulet, Dora Matejcik, Eva Hurley, and Olive F rench. Then the following tellers were appointed by the Chair- man Milton Watson, Leona McDonald, Allen Sibley, Dorothy Dean, Ralph Boni, and Mott Meldrim. Since the Education Law provides for the selection of trustees for the newly formed central school district in case the vote on the question should be affirmative, a nom- inating committee should be appointed to report after such a result had been announced. Lloyd Austin made the motion that the chairman appoint such a committee, it was sec- oned by F rank Cayea and unanimously carried. The com- mittee consisted of; Royce Bullock, Dorothy Dean, Pierce Evans, Ellis Hovey and Abner Clark. LA FHWflflDIAN Then the voting in the proposition of centralization began. At 8:30 P.M. the chairman, after learn’.ig that all present had voted, declared the polls to be closed. Votes cast 375,; votes in favor of the proposition 301; votes opposed 70; votes spoiled 4. There were no blank ballots. After the nominating committee’s chairman, Royce Bullock had reported, ballots were taken to decide whether to have 5 or 7 members on the board. The seven members board won. Three of them were to be from the village ot bdwards, to be voted on separately. The following members were elected; Harry Webb, Pierce Evans, Vernon Lutz, for on year terms; Lloyd Austin Fuller for three year terms. Edwards High School becomes Edwards Central School, a step forward for the education of the children of the community. SCHOOL CAFETERIA The cafeteria of Edwards Central School started serving lunches on Monday, October 25. Copies of menus to be erved were submitted last week by Mrs. Ray Webb, Home Economics teacher in the school. The set-up of the hot lunch programs through the National School Lunch Act is administered through the State Education Department. The room in the basement for the cafeteria was formerly an unused room which has been decorated with paint donated by the P.T.A.. The central district has installed the equipment and students enrolled in the Home Economics course have varnished and shellacked the tables and benches and painted cupboards, built after the room was painted. Mrs. Hattie Cassidy and Mrs. Clarence Barker are in charge of preparing the food. The lunch hour was staggered. The primary children eat first, followed by the intermediate grades, then the junior and senior high school pupils. Most students agree that this is the greatest single improve- ment in our school this year. NEW DEPARTMENTS A Commercial Department was added this year in charge of Miss Iaria. The following courses were offered this year: Introduction To Business, Short Hand, Typing, Business Arith- metic. Next year other courses will be offered so that students may major in this field. Except for a short time at the beginning of World War II, no physical Education has been offered in Edwards until this year. Mr. Terry is the teacher and he served as coach for Football, Junior Varsity coach for basketball, and is now coaching base- ball. Faculty Advisors Miss Bloomfield Miss Iaria The school year 1948-’49 started out very fine With Edwards centralized for the first time The football trophy the boys did capture And from those shields they did get a rapture The cafeteria was started late in the fall Which displeased the students not at all Then the seniors did the elections foretell When Dewey for President they did not sell The basketball season started out very well Until we met Clifton-Fine when we did not do so swell Then Mrs. Webb felt she had to resign Mrs. Fuller to substitute, did not decline In December the grades did brighten the season With a Christmas operetta-they had good reason The January Regents came and went And we had a black list of evil intent Then the next month the students went out on a strike This, neither the Board nor some of the teachers, did like This winter we didn’t have much snow And the seniors never did put on their show Then came the play-offs, which we lost Just two more cups is what it cost In the sectionals, it seemed almost a sin To get to the finals and then not to win But the boys back a trophy did bring They were best in their class-let the bells ring Mrs. Smith did Edwards Central School leave For a bigger school, we did perceive So the Board hired Mrs. Boulet To rescue the band, we really can say On March 30th which was a bright day In a sugaring afternoon, the pupils had their way On Good F riday A.M. the seniors set out For New York but they weren’t allowed to shout The Easter vacation by did slip Especially for the seniors on their trip Since all year books have to be sent out in time We can’t write out the rest of this rhyme Class Poem Now that school days are over And graduation draws near The very thought of leaving Clouds our eyes with tears. Our school days have been happy And their memories will linger on The friends we have made through the years Will remain in our hearts long. B is for Bernice whom we all like. The shortest in class, but a cute little tyke. C is for Connie and Charlie Clintman too, They are pretty good sports but how about you. D is for deeds which we aim to acquire, For our school which we do so admire. F is for Florence, Tootie is her nickname, As a good cook, she has acquired fame. G is for Glenn, we call him Nick, Where you find him, you’ll always find Dick. H is for honor, we all hope to gain, During future years and to win much fame. I is for Inez, Inz by name, For a party, she’s always game. J is for Jean, a little blond chick, Up her sleeve there’s always a trick. K is for Kenny, a regular flirt, Who is always after anyone in a shirt. L is for love, and we’ve got lots. And we’ve had ever since we were tots. M is for Marjorie, whose last name is Brasie, Soon after school, Day’s wife she will be. N is for nonsense and nuisance as well, Which is the better for us? Hard to tell. O is for occupation, after we leave school, In this world everyone works as a rule. ARDIAN P is for Patience whose name is Charlie, Sometimes he's stern but he’s usually jolly. Q is for quietness which none of us possess, Our marks would be higher if we talked less. R is for Rice, Frannie’s her name, Everytime you see her, she’s always the same S is for Shirley whose last name is Kerr, Where Jimmie is, you’ll always find her. T is for tardy marks we have all had, But after all that isn’t so bad. U is for unity, which we use every day, Especially when trying to put on a play. V is for victories which we usually have had, But playing Parishville and Clifton-Fine it was too sad. W is for Webb, Jimmie we say, And we call him it every day. X,Y, and Z are hard ones to rhyme, But in our daily life they are used all the time. This is the alphabet of the class of “49”, And we here by end the poem and off we sign. We wonder how it would seem If Jimmie were a Spider instead of a Webb. If Grace were a Corn instead of Rice. If Betty were Impatience instead of Patience If Carol were a gong instead of Bell. If Jimmy were a Miller instead of a Smith. If Gail were Emptier instead of Fuller. If Hazel were an Alcove instead of Hall. If Frank were Grand instead of Noble. If Cynthia were a Speaker instead of Barker If Shirley were a shelf instead of a Mantle. If Nancy were Taken instead of Given. If Pat were a Bean instead of a Ray. If James were Stone instead of Wood. .fiw. EDWARDIAN In 1939, a class of twenty students began their first grade at Edwards High School with Miss Margaret Sullivan teaching them.
