•A • •• s ' ri I a FOR EWORD ,v - Realizing that the chief value of any year¬ book IS TO ENABLE THE INDIVIDUAL TO LIVE AGAIN HIS SCHOOL EXPERIENCES AND TO RECAL L OLD ACQUAIN¬ TANCES, WE HAVE ENDEAVORED TO MAKE w ThE WHISPERING PlNES A TRUE REFLECTION OF EDNEYVILLE HIGH SCHOOL AS IT HAS BEEN DURING 1947“48. If you should find pleasure in turning these PAGES AND LIVING AGAIN FOR A MOMENT IN THE HAPPY ATMOSPHERE THAT M A 0 E THIS YEAR SO PLEASANT AT EDNEYVILLE, THEN WE WHO HAVE PREPARED THIS YEAR¬ BOOK SHALL BE DOUBLY REPAID FOR ALL OUR EFFORTS. The friendly associations with the boys, and GIRLS IN OUR SCHOOL HAVE MADE OUT TASK PLEASANT, BUT THERE IS ANOTHER AND GREATER REASON FOR OUR DELIGHT IN PREPARING THE WHISPERING PlNES, WE HAVE BEEN GREATLY IMPRESSED WITH THE FACT THAT MANY OF THE NAMES PRESENTED HEREIN WILL BECOME FAMILIAR TO ALL THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE AND NAT¬ ION IN THE YEARS TO COME. To THESE WHO LEAVE THE SCHOOL, MAY INDELIBLE RECORD OF PLEASANT MEMORIES HAPPY DAYS SPENT TOGETHER AND AN AWAKING THE EVERLASTING SPIRIT OF EDNEYVILLE. CLASS PROPHECY AND WENT ON OUR WAY, Before I knew what happened, we were at one of the atomicated homes, the residence of that great actor, Walter Pittillo, recently acclaimed FOR HIS ROLE AS MaCBETH IN TELEVISION, AND HIS wife, Virginia Lancaster with their two sets of twins. They were both handsome and happily MARRIEO, Walter and Virginia told us that Carroll Love and Melba Nix, now Mr, and Mrs, Love, hao just finished a concert tour of the United States, That was the next stop. They were TIRED FROM THEIR STRENUOUS WORK BUT PROMISED TO BE AT THE REUNION. And now for the first time I was to see the famous Burch ' s clinic hailed in every country as THE GREATEST ADVANCE IN MODERN CLINICAL TECHNI¬ QUE, Drs, Burch and Burch had jointly received the Nobel prize in medicine, Drs, Burch and Burch were William Burch ano June Searcy, who HAD COMINEO THEIR TALENTS SO EFFECTIVELY, THEY WERE VERY MODEST, GIVING A LOT OF CREDIT TO Pat Busbee and Beada Huntley, the laboratory techni¬ cians, and Betty Griffin, Dot Whiteside, Lila Dalton, and Ruth Drake, who head the nursin© staff , In the residential section we met Mr. and Mrs. Jack Freeman, Mrs. Freeman the former Lib Stepp; and Mr, and Mrs, Toby Tabor, Mrs. Tabor THE FORMER GRACE EdNEY. CLASS HISTORY I HEREBY WRITE THE HISTORY OF THE GRADUATING CLASS OF NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FORTY-EIGHT AS COM¬ PARED TO A LARGE CONVOY. On a bright autumn morning in the year nine¬ teen HUNDRED AND THIRTY-SIX OUR CONVOY SET SAIL FOR UNKNOWN HARBORS WITH AS MUCH DETERMINATION AS our forefathers had when they set sail for Ameri¬ ca on the Mayflower. Twelve unknown harbors we HAD TO VISIT BEFORE WE REACHED OUR FINAL PORT. We WERE NEW SAILORS AND THEREFORE UNACCUSTOMED TO THE STRANGE THINGS WE WERE TAUGHT, SO IT WAS NOT ODD THAT WE OROPPED ANCHOR IN THE FIRST HARBOR WITH CHATTERING TEETH AND TREMBLING KNEES. Our fir st Captains were Miss Randolph and Mrs. Ethan Pressley Huggins. They steered us all OVER THE ROLLING TIDE WITH FIRM GUIDANCE AND IN NO TIME AT ALL UNTIL WE WERE SAILING MERRILY INTO THE SECOND HARBOR. AS WE ARRIVED IN THE SECOND HARBOR WE WERE PUT UNDER THE COMMAND OF TWO NEW CAPTAINS, M|SS Bertha Ledsetter and Miss Marie Barnwell. While WE WERE IN THIS HARBOR A SMALL CONVOY CALLED THE EBENEZER SANK AND A FEW DAYS LATER WE PICKED UP HER SURVIVORS MAKING THEM CREW MEMBERS OF OUR OWN CONVOY, EDNEYVILLE. Because of our large crew we very often had TO BE SEPARATED AND PUT UNDER THE COMMAND OF TWO CAPTAINS. On dropping anchor in the third harbor we re¬ ceived as our next Captain, Miss Opal Thompsonwho STEERED US THROUGH SNARLS OF M U L T I P L I C A T I 0 N TA 8 L E S ANO OTHER TERRORS WITH A PATIENCE SELDOM FOUND. Here she was again appointed our Captain BY THE GREAT COMMANDER OF OUR CONVOY, £0NEYVILL E Mr. W„ J. Ne s81 tt. While in the eleventh harbor WE PRESENTED A PLAY Me AND My SHADOW WHICH WAS A GREAT SUCCESS. SLOWLY, OH, SO VERY SLOWLY WE SAILED ON WITH THE TWELFTH HARBOR BARELY IN SIGHT OVER THE DISTANT HORIZON. But soon we found ourselves in the roaring of THE TWELFTH HARBOR WHERE WE WERE PLACED UNDER THE COMMAND OF MRS. MARGARET LAWTER. On THIS VOY¬ AGE WE HAD TO SAIL BY THE ISLE OF SHAKESPEARE where Macbeth snapped at us with his snarling FANGS IN ALL HIS FURY; HOWEVER UNDER THE STERN BUT ALWAYS KIND COMMAND OF MRS. LAWTER WE SAILED clear of Macbeth’s snarling fangs, defeating HIM COMPLETELY. So ON AND ON OVER THE ROCKING WAVES OF THE TWELFTH HARBOR WE SAILED AT LAST ON A BRIGHT MORNING IN LATE MAY WHEN THE SWEET SCENT OF VIOLETS HUNG HEAVILY IN SOFT BLOWN BREEZ¬ ES WE SAILED CALMLY INTO OUR PORT. OuR JOURNEY WAS OVER. Our DESTINATION HAD been reached and OUR PORT WE HAD WAITED SO LONG TO REACH GAINED. GRADU AT I ON .’ .’ Still.as we look back over those now calm WATERS WITH TEARS IN OUR EYES AND SAD SMILES ON OUR FACES I HARDLY THINK THAT ANYONE OF US WOULD SAY WE HAO NOT ENJOYED ALL THOSE VOYAGES. YOU SEE WE LOVE THOSE WATERS ANO ALWAYS SHALL BECAUSE NOW AS WE LOOK BACK OVER THOSE WATERS WE REGARD THEM NOT AS STRANGE WATERS FULL OF UNKNOWN TERROR BUT AS ONE BEAUTIFUL SHINING SEA FROM WHICH WE HAVE GAINEO A VALUABLE EDUCATION THAT WILL ALWAYS BE HELPING US AS WE SAIL ON THROUGH THE GREAT VOY¬ AGE OF LIFE. ■ ♦ - LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We j THE GRADUATING CLASS OF °48g feel that WE HAVE ACQUIRED MUCH KNOWLEDGE , AND SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS DURING THE TIME WE HAVE SPENT AT Edneyville.
