I will refrain from whatever is deleterious and mischievi- ous and will not take or knowingly give any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to elevate the standards of my profes- sion and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping, and all family affairs coming into my knowledge in the practice of my profession. With loyalty will I aid the physician in his work and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care. -44 THE BLUFF FOREWORD The class of '27 sends greetings to the nurses and the friends of the Hospital. May those who are now leaving the J. E. M. H. Hnd in its pages many things to revive happy memories of their Training School days, and it is our hope that those who are still climbing the sometimes rough and by no means rose-strewn path- way, may receive encouragement from the motto of this class, Through Trials to Triumph. No triumph worth while is attained except by the way of trials, and the greater the trials the more glori- ous the triumph. The Class of '27 owe a great debt-first of all to our instruc- tors, who have with infinite patience, laid the foundation of our training as nurses-Then to the physicians and surgeons who have given us opportunity to put into practice our knowledge so gained- And we must also include among our debtors the patients who en- trusted themselves to our care-To all of these, as well as to the Roard of Managers, and last, but by no means least, to the Superin- tcndent and her helpers, we wish to express our heartfelt gratitude. The members of the Class of '27, fourteen in number, will, within a short time, enter the field of nursing. May those who con- tinue in their chosen profession ever strive for the highest and, in the ultimate triumph which crowns their efforts, reflect great honor upon the profession and upon their Alma Mater. You find them with their earphones on, Bc it night or be it day. She has a lot of dignity And still they call her Jo, Hinton's future's rather hazy-but, We bet she'll make the dough. A jolly nurse full five feet ten, In weight she'll surely win, Miss Binder weighs two hundred now, She never will get thin. Miss Adamson with tresses long Has a smile for everyoneg She does her best, when duty calls And never' lacks for fun. Our Billie Adams with hair of gold Some think she's very clever- For men may come and men may go But Bill talks on forever, Our little Jess is full of pep, Miss Wortman needs a horn To waken all the sleeping girls At six-fifteen each morn. Miss Culver with her eyes of blue Has vamped oh! many a man, To think of a song she cannot sing, Just try it if you can. Miss Schulze is from a western state, And never makes much noise But we think it's really fair to say She likes our Iowa boys. She does her work with all her might, Miss Paschal's not afraid To aid a doctor anytime Or make a kitchen raid. Miss Johnson with her snappy eyes, And nifty boyish bob, They say she talks an awful lot But she'll tackle any job. --1S-- THE -BLUFF From Avoca comes Miss Walker, She's nifty, neat and prim, She's very fondof Uncle Bob This maiden blonde so slim. Miss Larson lost her long straight locks And now she curls them tightg NVe've heard she's stepped out with the men, Now is this really right? CLASS PROPHECY This is station J.E.M.H. broadcasting this evening with a few members of the Edmundson Hospital training school alumnae on the program. Miss Florence Lar- son, who has Hnally decided that the world can get along without her, is announcing. The first number on the program is a vocal solo, Red Riding Hood, by Miss Mary Culver who is now in charge of a tuberculosis sanitarium in Colorado. Miss Culver is happy in her work and has succeeded in all that she has undertaken. She will be accompanied by Mrs. Josiah Greene, the former Miss Helen Martinson who has given up her profession for her charming husband and nine beautiful children. This is station J.E.M.H. broadcasting this evening. A talk on nursing in Africa will now be given by Miss Thelma Pascal who has spent over twenty years in the jungles of Africa, nursing and teaching the natives. Miss Kathryn Walker wishes to talk on the advantages of nurse's training in the teaching of school and in the taking care of husbands, Miss Walker is not married, but is well versed in the art of taking care of husbands, neverthless. This is station J.E.M.H. broadcasting from our studio in Council Bluffs, Iowa. A vocal solo, Love's Paradise, will be given by Mrs. Ruth Van Lansdale who will be remembered as Miss Ruth Binder and who has ventured thrice into the sea of matrimony. Accompanying her on the Duplex Grand is Miss Jessie Wortman who is visiting us while 'on her vacation. Z Miss Wortman is superintendent of the Soldiers Hospital at San Antonio, Texas. She claims her success is due to her experience on Third Floor of the Edmundson Hospital. A telegram was just received from Mrs. Aikins, the former Miss Elizabeth Allen, who sends her love. We hope she keeps part of it for Fritz Sr. and Fritz Jr. and the rest of her eleven children. They thrive on it. A talk on Beauty from care of the hair will now be given by Miss Geneva Hin- ton, who 'has studied beauty culture with lier nurse's training. Miss Hinton wishes everyone to have the same advantage 'as she has from the standpoint of beauty. Station J.E.M.H. broadcasting this evening from the studio in Council Bluifs, Iowa. We have with us tonight one of the most popular matrons of the select set of Hicksville, South Dakota. Mrs. Silas Hornsby is visiting us for a few weeks while selecting her daughter's trousseau. I am sure we all remember when Miss Schultze was selecting her own trousseau while in training. We have a telegram from the Misses Knight and Adams, who are on an extended trip throughout the world in an effort to improve the modern hospitals. They con- gratulate us on having, in their opinion, the finest and most improved hospital in the world. A review of Facts about the Underworld will be given by Miss Naomi Adam-- son, who has had very much experience with crime. People do not usually realize this until some part ot' the body f:1ilH to function properly. The diet kitchen work is very important in training. Three nurses work there. They are there for three months. They prepare all the special diets and all the special dishes. Perhaps one would think that the special diets are very unin- teresting. After working with them and learning how to make them np they surely are interesting. The Diabetic diet is very interest- ing. All food is weighed in this diet. So many grams of carbohy- drates, fats und proteins are weighed out tor each meal. This diet soon makes the Diabetic patient, better. The food is all prepared in the main diet kitchen but it is sent out on the trays from the diet kitchen on each floor. The Laundry The Hospital makes its own ice and does all the laundry. There is a special building for this. Many baskets of line11 are carried over' to the laundry every day. It comes back nicely laundered and ironed. All the nurses, uniforms are laundered and ironed. The Hospital has a very good heating system. THE BLUFF -- ::1- g Room es Dmin TS Nu THE BLUFF Surgery Miss Keast-Supervisor The Surgical Department is one of the most moderniy equipped in the middlewest. It is composed of tive operating rooms with 21 scrub room for each. an fmaesthetic room, a sterilizing room and at work room where the dressings are prepared. The doctors' rest room and the dressing room with a shower assure their comfort. The clinic room is especially interesting for many clinics are held here. Many interesting fases are discussed here. Six of the student nurses assist the surgeons with their opera- tions and keep up the supplies, Their duties consist of the care of the instruments, sterile linen, gloves. sterile solutions and keeping the rooms clean. Obstetrical Department Miss Culver-Supervisor The Obstetrical Department is complete in every respect. The new wing of the second floor is occupied by this department. The Delivery Room is furnished with everything the Obstetrician needs and nearby is the emergency room which is also well equipped. A sterilizing room makes the department complete. Not far away is the nursery which is most interesting to any- one. One room is equipped to care for the babes while the other room is for their baskets where they sleep. An Incubator is also in this room for all premature babies. The temperature for this is kept from 80 to 90 degrees usually. ..-3 2-.- THE BLUFF i .mn 'fiimiim fl .-s:.,'gt J Doct0r's Rest Room THE BLUFF ,M Children's Ward One of the most interesting departments of the Hospital is the Children's Ward. Children from the ages of a few days to twelve years are cared for here. Surgical and medical cases are both in this ward. There are ward rooms and private rooms here and the rooms are Hxed up especially for children. Each nurse receives three months training here. All this kind of work is done in the Laboratory, Dr. Johnson has charge of the Laboratory and he has it well equipped. Under his supervision thc nurses receive training in the Laboratory. Miss Hastings is the Technician. She has charge there. All culture work, Wassermann's Blood sugar Urea tests and Schick and Dick tests are done under sion. All specimens from the operating room come to tory Where a report of each is made. She learns the location of the drugs first. Then she learns to weigh powders and crystals and put them in papers or capsules. The most interesting work of all is the making of prescriptions. This she learns later in her Pharmacy work. --35- THE BLUFF Wsizfing Nurses Association The Visiting Nurse Association is supported by the Welfare Diive, There are three visiting nurses here in Council Bluffs. The student nurses receive six weeks training with these visiting nurses. They assist them in making all calls, Many people do not know how to call the visiting nurse. The association has an office. All people wishing the visiting nurse call thc office and the nurse makes the calls. Perhaps the call is only to take a temperature or to give a cheerful word to a discouraged mother, while again there might be much to do. . x .-354 'F H E H I, U F F Reception Room-Nurses' Home Sim? I I N S U R A N C E Council Bluffs, Iowa 21 Pearl St. Telephone 219 74 , , THE BLUFF A A FABLE FOR NURSES A story told by Major Julia Stimson at the Capping of The Army School of Nursing, the Class of '28, Once upon a time there was a Princess who lived in a beautiful country. She was a very young and lovely princess, and wore a beautiful crown that was made ot gold and was filled with precious jewels-diamonds, pearls, rubies and emeralds. Now the princess was a very human little princess even though she was very wise and very good, and her days were filled with deeds of unselfishness and kindly acts. and she was much beloved by the people of her country. She smilingly went about among them, loved by old and young. sick and poor, binding up their wounds. caring for their needs and going about her father's business with a high heart. In ber land there was no trouble nor sorrow and no want that she did not know about, and in all ways did she try to relieve, so much so that people throughout the king- dom knew her well, and there was none who did not cherish her. When she went through the streets and lanes of the villages and towns, rich and poor brought their little children to gaze upon her and her shining crown and her beautiful robes became as symbols. But the heart of the princess was not altogether happy, because, first, she found that wearing ot' the crown made her conspicuous, second, that it was so beautiful it had to be borne very carefully, third, it had to be kept on straight, and, fourth, she had to walk with gentle dignity a.nd care where so ever she went so that the precious jewels would ever glow brilliantly. One day when she was thinking about the burden of her crown and wishing that she might be like other girls her fairy godmother asked her why she was so sad, and she answered her: Oh, godmother, why can't I be like other girls? Why do I al- ways have to wear this shining crown so that people know who I ani wherever I go? Why can't I dance and play as others? It is such a burden to keep the jewels in the crown secure, clean, and radiant. Then the fairy godmother said: My child, I wonder if you understand the gift of the crown and the meaning of the jewels? The crown is to show that you are the King's daughter and that you belong to all the King's people, that they may see you more plainly, that they may love, and adore you, and follow your helpful words of courage and strength. It is the great symbol of the trust that you must guard. What do the jewels mean? The diamonds in your crown mean honesty and the pearls are pearls of silence, and the blue stones are sapphires of kindness, the glowing red ones are rubies of sympathy, the green ones emeralds of courage, and the purple stones are amethysts of dignity, and the sparkling yellow jewels are topaz of unselfishness. Of course, no daughter of the King can let the diamonds of honesty get scratched and marred, nor the pearls of silence dulled with gossip and unkind talk, nor the opals of honor blemisbed by too much thought of self, nor can the crown be worn in any but a proud and dignified way. But, of course, it is a burden to keep it shining and held high. Now what can I think of that the burden may not be too heavy and you may not feel that you are too different from those other girls of whom you speak? Then the fairy godmother disappeared from view. Soon she appeared again and said: My child, I have thought of something. Here I have a gift for you, some- thing shining and white that you may wear. Something not so heavy as a crown. Something studded with invisible jewels because of the traditions and history back of it. It is woven of threads of honesty, kindness, sympathy, courage, dignity, unself- ishness, humor, sewn together with silence, and it is light and easy to wear. I give you this nurse's cap because nurses are daughters of the King who are set apart for a special business. But there is one thing that you must do if you would be worthy of this cap. You must see to it that the face beneath the cap is the kind of face that 5 . THE BLUFF could wear a crown. It must be serene, full of lovely thought, conscious of its high calling, full of health and strength and seriousness of purpose. Then the little princess heaved a great sigh of joy, because she felt that the cap would be a lovely thing to wear, and from that day to this a nurse's cap has meant to loving hearts and seeing eyes a crown of glory, a badge of service. an emblem of loy- alty, and a sign of the King's daughter, and it may be seen wherever there is pain and suffering and wherever little children need guiding hands and laden mothers need strength and help, and always to the understanding heart there may be seen jewels in the fabric of the capgdiamonds of honesty, pearls of silence, sapphires of kind- ness, rubies of sympathy, emeralds of courage, amethysts of dignity, topazes of unselt- ishness, and sparkling opals of humor. The Nurse HE world grows better, year by year, Because some nurse, in her little sphere, Puts on her apron and smiles and sings And keeps on doing the same old things-- Taking the temperature, giving the pills To remedy mankind's numerous illsg Feeding the baby, answering bells, Being polite, with a heart that rebels. Longing for home and all the while Wearing the same professional smile,--- Blessing the new-born babe's first breath, Closing the eyes that are still in death, Taking the blame for the doctor's mistakesg Oh dear, what a lot of patience it takes--- Going off duty at seven o'clock. Tired, discouraged, and ready to drop. But called back on special at seven-fifteen, With woe in her heart which must not be seen, Morning and evening, noon and night, Just doing it over and hoping it's right. When we lay down our caps and cross the bar, O Lord, will you give us just one little star To wear in our crowns, with the uniforms new, In that city above where the Head Nurse is You? ,' ,. ,, . .444 V V'-Ky. .NM 4 .fl f' '- .'
