No scholastic structure is complete without the finishing touch of organiza- tion. Through the EHS organizations each student contributes his interest and abilities to the building of a firm foun- dation in student government, in spirit- ual life, and in social activities. In turn the organization develops each student's abilities and broadens his interests, thus farming an unshakeable basis for school life. The Sumter High School Band has continued to main- tain its high standard of performance in concert and marching. The band walked away with first prize money in the S. C. Marching Band Contest held at the Barn- well Harvest Festival to add a climax to their l958 football halftime performances. The band again received Division l lClass Ai rating in the District and State Music Festivals being judged on concert, sightreading, and marching. Five Edmunds High students were among the 29 Sumter students chosen for membership in-the i959 S. C. All-State Senior and Junior Bands participating in the Band Clinic at Winthrop College. Selection of members of these honor bands was determined by individual try-outs held in five S. C. towns. Four-hundred and sixty- four student musicians were heard by a committee of four band directors, including James D. Pritchard, director of the Edmunds band. Of the Sumter Bands, adjudicators have commented, the finest instrumental music education program in the state of S. C. g a clinician wrote the group of young- sters in your high school band are the finest and most cooperative to be associated with. The Sumter High Band Booster Club has been active in seeking support of the community in the musical education of the students. The band selected as officers for the year the follow- ing: Sandro Harris, president, Jane McKenzie, secre- tary-treasurer, Roy Jones, property manager, Nat Roof, student conductor, Alfred Dantzler, Drum Major. ,Qi is f KJQX Progroms, Provide Spirit For Sports Events, avi' 5 3 .mm 4-J Jomes D. The O-O tie with Camden, the first T.D. against Orange- burg, and the outstanding game played against Florence, though with a 26-13 loss, were bright spots. Sophomores and juniors saw much action on a tough schedule and next year are be- ing counted on to put the Birds back in the winning column. v a 1' 1 4 a 4 ,XL 1 . gifs 4 ,R -- o ,f- Q x ' 1 R , 5 I. 1- 1 3 . ,. ,Q-X V - , , 1 V 'AL 4m lll kg .1 Y., fx-,. r . 4157 4- 13 'X .xyftl , Vs'-' , 1 s ,- EQ ffl' 4 S s , , fl P ,W ' S?-'-f 'f , '02, 'fydfii F ' ' 2 sv- '5 '.- ,w-fe-m.?'- ' k?k ' '. , . 1 fs if ZS- sz- 3' ff. 2-'fYy ' 247, if H h .
