J ridders Finish Second One minute was the difference between last seasonis jun- ior varsity football team and 1958's championship squad. The minute came at the end of the Carver game. The Red- skin stellar defense had held the Cubs to a scoreless tie. In that final minute Carver scored a touchdown on an eight- yard pass. The Redmen were defeated 8-0. The Redskinis home game with Patterson provided the biggest thrill of the season. With less than four minutes Wounded warrior HERMAN BRISCOE grabs Harry Sipes' pass, then scores a TD against 1 Dunbar. 1 left, the Clippers led 8-0. The Redmen came back and scored a touchdown but missed the conversion try. With only 50 seconds remaining, Charlton Price took a punt on his own 30 yard line. He raced down the sideline for a touchdown and a 12-8 victory. The Indians finished with a 7-1 slate, scored 146 points, and yielded only 30 points. Individual stars were Guy Mar- low, Herman Briscoe, Arlett Pettaway, and Collis Blow. Then Cool At the halfway point in the season the Redskins were sporting a 4- and 0 record and were considered a contender for the city crown. The next foe was the neighboring Saint Joseph eleven who were seeking revenge for the whitewashing they received at the hands of the junior varsity last year. They were determined to win, and they did. After tak- ing a 6-0 lead in the first quarter the Redskins' offense stalled. The Saints' huge forward wall overpowered the Tribe paving the way for a 22-6 victory. This dropped Ed- mondson one notch below City, McDonogh, and Poly who remained unbeaten. at aa I M, J' Dwi-iZ N. The Redskins met Carver Tech next. Last year's ,Skin- Bear junior varsity game ended in a 16-16 tie and was the only mar on the Skins' perfect record. The Tribe hoped to avenge that lone blot. -. However, a soggy turf and torrential downpour helped . the Bears to overcome an 8-O deficit to beat the Big Red i 14--8. The Tribe was -1-4 as it prepared for arch-rival Patter- son in the season finale. The Clippers coasted to a 30-6 l X victory in a fray brightened only by the defensive play of senior tackle Harold Fairman, and a touchdown by Mau- rice Blow. The score came on an 35 yard kickoff return. RAY KING-Our candi- date for unsung hero. if I It was Blow's third such run of the season. X si VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY-Firsl row: R. Rose, C. Swann, H. JeEers. Second row: D. lanes, G. C:awford, Coach Edward Elliott. Not present for photo was R. Davis. Harriers Place Fifth Led by junior Dave Janes, the varsity cross country squad won three triangle meets and finished high in five others including three M. S. A. meets. It gave Edmond- son a standing of fifth among 11 cross country teams in the city. Edm-ondsonis outstanding record in cross country came with no little effort. The team spent long hours practicing in Leakin Park. Trackmen were hampered in one meet when trans- portation difficulties resulted in the late arrival of several squad members. Coach Ed Elliott will have ,lanes and Gene Crawford returning next year. Members lost to graduation were Rick Rose, Charles Swann, Henry Jeffers, and Ronald Davis. The junior varsity team also finished with a creditable record. ,lim Hesterberg finished fourth among a field of more than 100 in the final M. S. A. group meet. It established a school record.
