Elaborate tropical decorations of Bali Ha'i enhanced an atmosphere of the South Sea Islands. The Cafetorium was set in a festive island mood with palm trees, tropical plants, and a mountain backdrop casting a lavender hue on the dance band. A main height of interest was a pond stocked with goldfish and floating orchids. The Social Center's decorations contributed to the theme with a grass hut, tropical birds, and nets draped from the ceiling. Many fascinated couples were found gazing at the colorful goldfish and the delicate float- ing orchids in the tropical pond. At right are Kaye Bailey, Mary McGibbon, Sharon Charles, Carole Jenkins, Mary Cackrum, and Betty Brant decorating the pond for the dance. 9 .'e D '1 3 g T nf 'wigs gfvml bb- E. I -if nv ' X ' .. Musicians Earn High Being the school mascot, Benny Bengal felt it was his duty to visit and perhaps, if he was lucky, participate in the E.H.S. i959-60 Orches- tra and Band. Knowing that the principle purpose of the Orchestra and Band was to acquaint the students with musical literature, past and present, Benny asked to try his luck at a few of the instruments used in both groups. Trying to talk above the screechs of the violin, Mr. An- derson, director of music in School Dist. 15, succeeded in telling Benny that the Orchestra needed a little peace and quiet after the many con- certs they gave for other schools as well as for their alma mater. A considerate Benny realized that the Orchestra was worn out after such an active year so he left them to their recuperation and went over to talk to the members of the Band. He didn't stay long, though, be- cause the students in the Band were soaking their feet in hot water . . . they marched at half-time during the football season and in the 1959 Santa Claus parade!! Though prepar ing themselves for concerts and other perform- ances, radio and television appearances, and record sessions, the Bel Canto Choir found a few minutes to look under chairs for Benny. By peeking around corners, Benny learned that, as in the in- strumental groups, the fundamental purpose of the Bel Canto Choir was not the performance but individual conduct and self-discipline. Because he 'l'lO students that comprise the Chorus were training for performances and for entrances into the Bel Canto Choir, Benny was po- litely ignored. Feeling rejected, Benny squeezed into the practice room of the Mellow-Aires, a select group of 20-23 people who were the cream of the crop from the Bel Canto Choir. The Mello- Aires performed in concerts and for civic affairs. Youngren. Altos, S. Baever, S. Bosch, S. Clark, C. Cole, L. Copstead, E. Coxsen, D. Day, S. DeLap, C. Dinkel, C. Erickson, P. Fosberg, D. SILVERNAIL' T T - Mr. Silvernail, superintendent of School District No. I5 The challenge to youth is ever-present to plan and to work toward a richer, fuller and more satisfactory life. Those of you who accept the challenge are already aware that there is no substitute for determination and hard work. In VSWOSPSCT, l hope you will use this book to help recall the joys and satisfactions that were yours while attending Edmonds Senior High School. G. Mason Hall Seniors: A few decades ago your grandparents were among the favored or fortunate if they at- tended high school. The chances that your parents finished high school are good. Today society expects you to complete high school. Whereas high school was once a termination point for formal education, the situation has changed greatly today. There is no terminal education - we must forget the term and the idea. Continued schooling and re-education are the concepts with which you must cope. A successful life in your generation will be more closely tied to your level of education than ever before. May I urge you to consider seri- ously the advantages of continuing your edu- cation next year. Harold E. Silvernail Mr. Hall, principal Without the assistance and guidance of Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Sorenson, and Mrs. Lindbloom, secretaries, the ottice ot Ed- monds Senior High School would have been in utter con- fusion. Always present and willing to help were Mr. Norman ilettl and M Opgaard, vice-principals in 1959-60. ur Administration Wilson Gilpin and Frank Goulet, head custodian, were always around to make sure Edmonds Senior High School was clean and warm throughout the i959-60 school year. Students flew around corners and raced toward the lunch line in order to get their portion ot the delicious food cooked under the supervision ot Mrs. Lois Rauch, head cook in 1959-60. ,4 -,,..---' ,,.4-I Kg i i ls is Bc-:nny's Bosses Mr. Gene Adams English, Publications Mr. Ed Aliverti Band, Choral Music Miss Cherie Austin Home Economics Mrs. Helen Beaver English Mrs, Louise Banks Mr. Kenneth Bumgarner Biology, Chemistry Mr. Carroll Clark Radio, History Typing English Mrs. Hallie Anderson Librarian 1 . 1, ' K U A 'Y X - Mr. Bob Anderson Instrumental Music X X Business Machines Mr. Merle Blevins History Miss Lucille Balch English Mr. Doug las Bridges Library 84 Mr. Jerry Conrad Geometry, Crafts Mr. Gerald Clay Mathematics Mr. .lohn Cooke Biology YW?
