LETTERWOMEN An ambitious group ol twentyfthree girls worked hard and steadily this year to make a sport program for all the girls in the school. This group of twenty- three was the Letterxx'omen's Club. Its officers for this year are Teiko Maitune, president, Ruth Boyle, vice president. and Agnes Anderson, secretary' treasurer. Managers of the various sports were: Mercedes Smart, who took charge of the fall sport, speedballg LaVerne DeVoy, who headed the volleyball group, Ruth Boyle, in charge of basketball, Agnes Anderf son, who managed tennis and ping pong, Dorothea Leichty, who took charge of the tumouts for track and baseball, and Ryoko Maftine, who headed the minor sports. Carol Foard and lvlerilyn Brine were in charge of the hiking activity this year. The clubs chiefactiyities for the year were the two initiations, one in February which was held Jointly with the Lettermen, and a second one in june harlier in the school year the Letterwomen and Lettermen sponsored the Homecoming Dance. 1 l' ,d,4 f gdb lfnyviblll I t Q l ', . More interest was taken in the Lettemien during this year, than at any previous time. Starting the year with the dance, which was sponsored iointly with the Letterwomen. the Letter' men entertained the alumni at Homecoming. The dance was held at the Alderwood gymnasium. In February they held the first initiation in some years when twenty new members were taken in. After initiation a joint banquet was held with the Letterwomen. Membership may be had by eaming a letter in football, track, basketball, tennis, or baseball, or as a manager. Members are taken in at the end of the basketball season, drawing from those who made their letter the last spring as well those from the football and basketball teams of he current year. The boys were advised by athlet' coach, Mr. Vyfarren Bieber. Anderson, the honor society has undertaken more duties than hefore and has widened its interests in other school activities. Those who received Torchhearer pins were: Herb Meyf ring, Virginia Jennings, Pauline Horning, Shelleah Willianis, Bertha Schroeder, jack Bartlett, Norma jean Wraiy, Helen Carey and Barbara Atkinson. Qne of the most important events was the writ' ing of a Torch constitution which Virginia jennings constructed. A formal ritual, heretofore non-existent in the Torch, was written this year hy Doris Ruth Davis for all future initiations. Under the direction of jane Urner and Carol Foard Torch memhers ushered at the main events of the year, including junior and senior plays, vod- vil, and commencement, Twinkling stars radiating from a huge central star carried out the theme of stardust at the an' nual Torch dance, April 12. Torch officers were Herhert Meyririg, president, Virginia Jennings, vicefpresidentg and jane Urner, secretary. In April the organization entertained at an asf semhly according to custom, and in May enjoyed its annual picnic. y- , ff, , ,, ,T -. I L' A 1 kN QUILL AND SCROLL To start, the year, the Homer A. Post chapter initiated ten memhers. Christmas party came next, with everyone turning out to hear the guest speak' ers. Election was held to name Irene Thompson, president: Arland Smith as vicefpresident, and Agnes Anderson to fill the secretarys position. These officers served for the year. Later in the second semester ten more memhers were initiated following a hanquet. Ending the year was the pic' nic which is an animal affair. Professional and stu' dent journalists spoke at several of the husiness meetings. Among the speakers heard were Professor Mer' ritt E. Benson of the University of Washington School of journalism, Wally Reed, editor of the year hook at the University, Richard Hicks and Bob Roe, student journalists at the University, and Mr. L. VJ, Brown, a linotype operator at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Vs'ith Miss Dorothy Allison as adviser, the cluh spent a very active year and interest was shown in all contests sponsored hy the Quill and Scroll So' ciety Several people gained recognition from the society for participation in these contests.
