Starting the year with the dance, which was sponsored iointly with the Letterwomen. the Letter' men entertained the alumni at Homecoming. The dance was held at the Alderwood gymnasium. In February they held the first initiation in some years when twenty new members were taken in. After initiation a joint banquet was held with the Letterwomen. Membership may be had by eaming a letter in football, track, basketball, tennis, or baseball, or as a manager. Members are taken in at the end of the basketball season, drawing from those who made their letter the last spring as well those from the football and basketball teams of he current year. Spending the year in innumerf able practices, working backstage keeping things running smoothly during plays and generally makf ing themselves useful when there is an assembly, the stage crew have made themselves indispenf sable. The stage crew also made up all the settings for the plays, even to the making of venetian blinds. This years debate team had the question, How Should We Deal With the Railway Problem in the United States? The team was composed of joe Harris, Barbara Atkinson, Harry Gibbons, and Bertha Schroeder. In the fall they, and Coach G. F. Hatch, traveled to Bellingham for the tri-county meet. The group also aided in installing lights and ot h e r electrical equipment for school functions. Under the sponf sorship of D. A. Jacobson the club learned many valuable things. With Pat O'Halloran as Yell Queen, and Ruth Boyle, Irene Storing, Ethylda Webb, and Virf ginia Ettrup as staff, organized cheering was heard at all football and basketball games. They exemf plihed school spirit and aroused it in the student body. Boasting the fact that theirs is the largest club in the school the Drama Club was very active for the.newly-formed group that they were. Cin? STUDENT LIFE Hours of study and hours of play comhine to make up a halanced schedule which encourages Edmonds students to engage in activities which will he instrumental in hringing out latent tastes and talents and aid in developing cooperation, good citizenship and initiative. Here, students, to graduate must have majored in two suhjtxts, minored in two, and have earned a total of thirtyftwo credits. The things that most high school students enjoy more, however, than classes, are the extrafcurricular activities. These are divided into five main groups. music, dramatics, cluh work, student puhlications and athletics Athletics claim the interest of most of the Edmonds students, perhaps hecause it provides an hour a day of comparative freedom as well as active exercise Too, the field of athletics is open to anyone who has the necessary talent for sports. Vvhile students are given credits for music work, it is considered to he an activity since playing for various school functions keeps them husy throughout the year Knowledge of your instrument or heginners' hand are the only requirements to join the hand. The orchestra memhers. however, are put on a selective hasis, and are chosen hy the instruc.or. Miss Fae Brechner The inclination for sing' ing is all thats necessary to admit students into the chorus or glee. These musical groups provide one of the hest mediums for sell expression in the school. Dramatics, too, provide an outlet for the students who seek self expression The junior and senior plays and school vodvil give apf proximately two hundred pupils an opportunity to display their his- trionic ahility. They also provide opportunities for stage manage' ment, direction and puhlicity management. Managed largely hy the upper classmen are the student puhlica- tions. VVhile the annual provides a few openings for freshmen and sophomores. the VVireless is edited entirely hy upperclassmen. A popf ular place is MefShak as student journalists meet to get awgnments, exchange ideas and to find full scope for their writing ahility. Most numerous are the various cluhs which flourish under the stimulus of student interest. The Boys' and Girls' Cluhs, which inf clude all hoys and girls as memhers, give all students at least one inf terest during their school careers. Cluhs are organized hecause of an apparent need for them. Radio. Photo, Dramatic, and Ad Cluhs were organized hecause they filled a need Most cluhs provide practical training in many fields which and their memhers in their school work. For students who have just entered high school, there are limit' less opportunities for extrafcurrieular activity which will help to make school days more enioyahle as well as helping to lay a firmer foundation for the later life of the citizens of tomorrow. It was by this appointment that Miss Brechner was able to intro duce athletics on a competitive basis. This new system, to be car' ried out at sportsdays, provided that five teams or fewer be chosen from each school in the county and classified into A, B, and C groups according to ability. Speedball, with a turnout of ap' proximately 125 girls, started the athletic program for the year. Speedball sportsday was held at Edmonds and was the only one of the year to be run nonfcomf petitively. Following speedball season the girls transferred from the Held to the newlyfcompleted gym where they took up volleyball. Round robin playoffs character' ized the basketball season, with jean Paige's team coming out on top with no losses. Early spring saw the girls leavf ing the gym to begin play on the baseball diamond. There was a tumout of 100 girls under Man- ager Dorothea Leichty. Baseball, track, and tennis were combined in one sportsday which took place at Monroe. ,L .gf I1 Orchids to Kiss Pao Brechner for Dffhlill the tumbling teal to its present standard and for revis- ing the girls stllletin so that they sre now more competitive and more interesting te buh .lun-,en and players. At the beginning of the track season, each girl's record was tab' ulated as a trial, and at the end of the season her improvement was calculated in terms of points. The tumbling team had a sucf cessful season, accounted for by Coach Brechner's untiring efforts towards its success and also the :ooperation of the team members. Purple and gold suits were bought at the beginning of the season, with the understanding that they would remain with the succeeding team. Among the highlights of the tumbling season: their perform' ance at the State Basketball Tour- nament and the A. A. U. at the University of Washington, and the appearance of the tumblers' pic' tures on a page in the brown sec' tion of the Seattle Times. Ping pong proved to be quite popular with the girls as a minor sport. Mercedes Smart placed first in singles, and Betty Peterson and Marynel Thompson took the first doubles title.
