After a brief examination by the faculty - we were placed under the tender care of Miss McConihe and Mrs McGibbon, who bravely attempted to instill into us some of that noble spirit of learning to which our institution is dedicated. X In the fall of 1933, an intelligent group of bright sophomores, P no longer green freshman cubs, we passed into the hands of Mrs. I Hallie B. Anderson and Warren Bieber. Under their tutelage, our hidden intellectual qualities became observableg in fact, we had thirteen Torch members. The next fall Mrs. Grace Bliss and E. T. Parsons accepted the ' a duty of guarding the one hundred survivors. We maintained our'- high position as Edmonds' leading social lights by our presenta' tion of the junior dance, a peppy assembly, and a play, Healthy, .. Wealthy, and Wise. ,. As seniors, under the guidance of Miss jones and Mrs. Murphy, the class of 1936 achieved even greater heights than ever before. The ten with highest scholastic standings in the class of 92 are: . john Breed, 3.6383 Bernard Thomson, 3.6073 Reah Kennedy, 3.4163 Corinne Price, 31.355, Don Moyer, 3.353g Betty Fox, 3.3232 Alfred Flint, 3.32lg Paul Carlstedt, 3272, Maxine Lee, 3.1723 Dorothy Crow, 3.138. . 4 Of our activities of the year a highlight was the senior party, very successfully held under the flying colors of huge flags to the enchanting strains of the Shipmates and with confetti accompanie ment which proved a tangling feature at intermissionf' Also out' standing was our threefact comedy, Big Hearted Herbert, which was a howling success. The girls creditably showed their ability as cooks by serving a tea in the forrn of a farewell to the teachers. Then after four years of anticipation came that day so outstanding in a Seniors life, Skip Day. Despite the usual hazards no casualties weref reported and all survived to present themselves faultless for the passing of review. S Freshman Class History The youngest monkeys of our tribe to be permitted through the gates of the E. H. S. jungle came from far and near. Of these 115 wide-eyed freshies 5 7 entered from the Edmonds Grade School and 39 of that 57 entered the grade school from other schools. Thus they have but 18 pioneers The freshman class also includes 49 members from Alderwood and 9 who came from Esperance. The freshmen have spent their first year in becoming adjusted to their new surroundings and have had little time fwe think they were just a little bashful, tool to participate in many of the school's activities. They are line prospects though, and we are sure that next year they will be tak' ing active parts in every activity and will prove themselves the leaders we believe them to be. Luck to you--Freshmen! -was Sophomore Class History In September, 1934, 111 freshmen were herded into the cages of Miss McConihe and Mr. McGibbon. ' This was their hrst step forward in the progress of obtaining a high school education. The members of this class did not assist in very many school activities, excepting the freshmen class assembly held March 12. ' One year later there were only 88 cubs caged in the two rooms of Mrs. Anderson and Mr. Bieber. A great advancement in all school activi' ties was displayed by having active members on the seasonal football and basketball teams. The girls also showed their ability in the basketball sports day that was held here. On May 15 the sophomore class made its debut hy holding the annual class party. Junior Class History Almost a hundred frightened freshmen came swinging from bus to bus on their way to Edmonds high school in the fall of 1933. Upon arriving they were greeted by Paul McGibbon and Miss Ruth McConihe, and added to the rest of the menagerie. They ended the year with a grand frolic at Silver Lake. In 1934, they wended their way back from jungle freedom to the big zoo and were confined in a higher cage by Mrs. Hallie B. Anderson and Warren Bieber. They were found to possess athletic, scholastic and acting ability, for they downed even the seniors in vodvil. The sophomore party was one of the most successful of the season, as was their picnic and skating party at Silver Lake. i In the term of 193936 this particular species was again promoted to higher cages, their keepers being Mrs. Grace Bliss and Mr. E. T. Parsons. In the fall they had an exclusive lollyrpop party and their .postponed junior Prom was successfully presented in March with the appropriate St. Patrick's green much in evidence. Their musical and acting abilities were' applauded in vodvil, operetta, and junior play. They wound up a. hilarious year in the zoo with their annual Silver roundup. twenty one J-. .-.-,pw .- - ff .Q -,l m . . - F.. , . . , '15-1f ' 'ff 'H' 55223 4545-43-?+1.. - ' Jtdwxz ' - 5 . 3 - ,. -' - .Q - .a':'---'x..'- .-n-- uf.. - - ' 'A'1-- H- A - - ..' 1' - I , I .4 .,:I 1 , , . In true Girls' Club spirit this year the practice of introducing all new girls at the meetings was commenced in order to help the newcomers get acquainted and to make them feel more at home. You ask why the girls were all in middies every Wednesday of each week! just an oldffashioned custom - Middy Day. The strange noises coming from the gymnasium practically every noon were just the echo of the noon dancing lessons which were sponsored for the beneiit of the funfortunate?j ones who, as yet, had not learned the art of stepping on other people's toes. Of course they just couldn't get along without having big and little sisters for the girls were positive their little sisters couldn't possibly make the grade without big sisters. fMaybe they were wronglj Again this year the girls showed the true Christmas spirit by filling baskets for families less fortunate than they were. On March 27 the girls gathered enough courage to escort their boy friends for someone else'sj to the Leap Year Hop. Decorations of blue with silver stars lent a romantic atmosphere which naturally was a big hop toward the dance's success. - The girls ended their activities with the main event of the year, the Mother's Day Tea. A very interesting and appropriate program was supplied by members of the Girls' Club, following which, all sadjoumed to the gymnasium for refreshments and a final get together. twenty our B O Y S C L U B . One of the different activities this year was the introduction into the school of a ping pong tournament. Bob Lee and Merle Hyatt were put in charge of the tables. We bet the Boys' Club purse was pretty flat after having to buy all the ping pong balls. We suggested that maybe they should have had a prize for the one who broke the least amount. A noon dancing class was started in an attempt to teach some of our stag line to be the hit of the party - in ten easy lessons for maybe morelj. The boys were assisted by the able direction of Miss Skram, Miss Noble and Mr. Bieber. Later on they held joint classes with the girls. - The boys also joined with the girls in putting up Christmas baskets and helped to give the unfortunate families a real Christmas. They had many interesting programs at their meetings. At one, Mr. Lee from Richmond Beach gave a very interesting talk on hobbies and drew some pictures for them. twentyffve T O x R c i H Top row: Paul Carlstedtq Bob Thomson, Donald Echelbarger, Stanley Jennings. The Torch had its full share of members this year representing all three of the upper classes, but they did have a rather diiiicult time getting to' gether on their activities. Nevertheless the annual Torch dance which took place October 5 was certainly a credit to its name and was one of which the school had real reason to be proud. The dance floor was given a very warm and cozy atmosphere by the placement of easy chairs and couches along the walls, while lighted lamps and large baskets of flowers lent a graceful air to the whole room. They decided at one time to have an icefskating party, but at their next meeting this motion was overruled by one to have a swimming party. Still the members just couldn't agree, and at .their next meeting the swim- ming party was changed to a skating party which actually was held at Playland. A spilling good time was had by all. A number of the Torch members were privileged to usher at the 4 operetta and also at Commencement. Ofiicers for the year were Bernard Thomson, presidentg Maxine Lee, vicefpresidentg Helen Moy, secretary, Stanley Jennings, sergeantfatfarms. This able group of boys and girls is due much more credit than it has ever received, for if it were not for our stage crew we could have no plays, operettas, or other presentations. Mr. Goble has willingly given much of his time, and it is through his efforts that we can proudly say we have one of the best equipped and lighted stages in the county. The stage crew this year built eight new pieces of stage setting and put in a. new switchfpanel, together with new skyfdrop which gave us practically the benefits of a new stage. Eight new members were added to this capable group this year and it didn't take them long, after their initiation, to acquire the outstanding habit of the older members-that of eating! Thus throughout the year the stage crew has worked hard, eaten hard, and played hard, the latter consisting of four swimming parties at the Alki Natatorium and one surprise party for their adviser, Mr. Goble. They wound up their busy year with a good oldffashioned picnic fwith plenty of eatsj. twenty seven 1 , , . W4 K 1, Top row: Stanley Jennings, vodvil: Jimmy Stuart, football. They started out with a peppy dance which was held December 6. During the year they had two initiations and brought in five new members. At the time we go to press we hear they are planning on another one at the end of the year. just to be different they had at progressive dinner and started with dessert at Marylu Podas' home and ended with soup at Virginia Walker's home. We have enjoyed a variety of activities and entertainments, and are much better equipped by our associations than we were a year ago. In our dances, group parties, and initiations we have met on the level of fellowship, and have really made school life more pleasant for each of us and for the collective student body. Our assemblies and matinees this year have been the result of splendid judgment on the part of the Board of Control and the Assembly Commit' tee. and we certainly can do no less than applaud their leadership in this field of endeavor. Too, we owe much to Mrs. Berry, who has been asplenf did ally of the boys and girls of E. H. S. We won't forget your kindness, Mrs. Berry, and we hope to be able, in some measure, to reciprocate. To write of each of our joys and sorrows 'would be uninteresting, but it seems that the past year has given us some of our finest and most pleas' ureable memories-memories that have been fostered by a well-rounded social calendar. To those responsible for our activities-Bravo! We must have a better year if your influence holds sway longer. fortyfone VODVIL What would a jungle be without some colored folk? The allfschool vodvil Black and White was presented November 17-16. Let us recall what took place those two evenings. The high school mixed chorus started the program with Way Down South. There were six solo dances-and were they good! The Ghost of the Minstrel Show was there along with the Junk Men's Band. The cowboys and girls were there with A Night on the Range. The lettergirls' Athletes Foot walked off with the show, and the faculty quartet admitted they were Goin' to Heaben Someday. We had the Black Diamond Minstrels' and 'kMr. and Mrs. stepped from the funny page to be with us. The juggling jugglersn kept us busy guessing. The Sunflowers of the Sunny South preceded the Romping Rompers' who tumbled about. A little bit of Harlem rhythm was included in Top Hat and to make the evening complete we visited a Street Scene in Ethiopia. 1 AND SCROLL ' Continued from page twenty-nine It was organized january 22 with a charter membership of nine which included Vera Olson, Walter Burntt, Wilson DeLand, Martha Louise Bliss, Gail McCann, Aldeen Low, Bob Lee, Laurie Duston and Lorraine Wilcox. The membership now also includes Jimmy Stuart, Bertrand Londerville, Bert Armes, Harriett Taylor, Reah Kennedy, Gayle Matzen, Agnes Stadler, Thelma Cressey, Lou Servey and Eva Erlandson. Laurie Duston was elected president and Vera Olson, secretary. Busi- ness meetings were held once a month during class time and social meet' ings on every fourth Tuesday evening in the month. At the evening meet' ings initiations were held, followed by informal dances to which a member might invite one guest. For its social meetings the Quill and Scroll had two speakers, Mr. G. F. Hatch and Mr. Harold Turnblad, chief of the Associated Press from Seattle. They have big plans for next year, among them being a regular all school dance. So roses to you, Quill and Scroll, for being the upeppiest little club in school this year -- and to you, Mrs. Bliss, for your able work as adviser. May you go twice as far next year! This club includes those who have secured recognition in writing our Wireless, of which Wilsoii DeLand and Aldeen Low were the very eili- cient editors for the 'first and second semesters, respectively. CHORUS ' Continued from page thirty The chorus consisting of thirtyftwo boys and girls met in the auditorium every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. BIG-HEARTED HERBERT Continued from Dmte thirty-three Herbert Kalness is a self-made business man who insists that his family must be brought up in the plain traditions. When his daughter becomes engaged to a Harvard man, and his wife has not only ice cream but Harvard men to dinner, Herbert nearly goes out of his mind with rage. Herbert's home becomes safe for Harvard men only after his family has embarrassed him by embracing his plain traditions. The sight of his wife in an old'fashioned dress and a supper consisting of Irish stew and apple pie destroys this curmudgeon's resistance. HALF-WAY HOUSE Continued from page thirty-three The Junior Play for 1936 is a light mystery comedy. The story is built around a residence situated halfway between an insane asylum and a penitentiary. What happens when a convict meets a lunatic provides the humor. Anna Pennell is in charge of propertiesg Agnes Stadler is prompterg and Jean Barrett-Scott is business manager. ' The play, written by Alexander McCalmon and -William Roos, is coached by Miss Ruth McConihe, and as press time nears, we can predict an enthusiastic reception of Halfway House. fortyfthree GIRLS' ATHLETICS Continued from page thirty-seven Speedball was started in the fall. The girls played it from the time school started until October 19 when they had their Sports Day. Speed' ball was the game played at Marysville with girls from 7 schools attending. About 40 girls from Edmonds left in the wee, small hours of the morning to go up on the bus. They had a good showing in the games and celef brated with a stop at the Triple X, and then home. The following week the girls started playing volleyball. There was a good turnout for it. Edmonds was well represented at Snohomish for the Volleyball Sports Day, December 14. Games and folk dancing were en- joyed after the volleyball playoffs. Basketball started with a bang after the Christmas vacation. On March 14 the Edmonds gym was filled with girls from 4 schools for the Basketball Sports Day. Entertainment was provided by our tumbling team. A cafeteria style luncheon was served by the cooking class. Track, baseball, and tennis, the features in the spring, were played until school was out, Track and Baseball Sports Day was held May 16 at Monroe. Edmonds starred in many of the track events. The tennis team did themselves justice in their matches. Several matches were played with other schools, with the E. H. S. squad winning their share four returns are incomplete., The girls' tumbling team has been very active this year with acts in the Vodvil and several assemblies. Much credit is due their competent coach, Miss Skram. Continued from page thirty-nine PRACTICE GAMES CONFERENCE GAMES Edmonds 15 Lake Stevens 17 Edmonds 23 ...,.... The cast of Big-Hearted Herbert has been highly praised - one of the finest ever assembled for a production here. The dancers in Jewels of the Desert were exceptionally entertaining. Headed by Betty Fox, we record them as a huge success. The art activities of Gertrude Reusch and the art class were inspired by Miss Berg, and she is responsible, therefore, for the increased interest shown. foftyfvw' J 405. fi' -5' K A' '2- 4- 4' 4' 5' is sf 5.3 4' + ff j .S -Q' 'Z' Sf. -Z' if -5 'Z' fi' + Qi' sf f .Y 5 sf nf f 5 04r WE MAKE OUR OWN ICE CREAM BRI-CKS - EULK 3 SOPT ICE CREAM SUPER OONES 23 33 32 5 32 I ' ff it K -2 W H ET?
