Fokfwokp g Yet all experience is an arch where thro' gleams that untravelled world, whose margin fades forever and forever when l move. CU lysses-Tennyson? Forty-nine is a magic word in American history, for this was the year when covered wagons moved westward, carrying thousands of pioneers in search of gold. Their pioneering is a golden chapter in America, a chapter filled with courage, great deeds, the tall tales of the new West, with the color and vigor which continue to enhance and enrich our American heritage. Just forty-nine years ago, in Rochester, another group of pioneers answered the challenge of another frontier. We were on the threshold of a great industrial and scientific era, and there was a need for trained workers to participate in the development of this new era. These later Forty-niners fittingly chose the name of a great American inventor for their school and as Edison Technical and Industrial High School set out to blaze a new trail in vocational and industrial education. Today Edison stands on the threshold of a great adventure. There are still worlds to conquer, new trails to blaze. This is the atomic age - the age when men have embarked on the great adventure of conquering the mysteries of space. To the achievement of this .task, we, the present Forty-niners, are urged on by the courage and visions of those earlier Edisonians who have taken part in this great adventure. Edisonians fought and died in two world wars to give us the freedom to think, to save for us the materials with which to build a better world, and to set us the example of courage and vision that will be our inspiration to carry us on our way. To these Edisonians and to their teachers, to the men who fought and died to preserve a free world, we pledge ourselves to carry on their work. We shall seek for a new treasure to be found in building a world of peace and plenty for all men everywhere - a world in which there shall be no barriers of race, creed, or color - a world in which the only bonds by which men are bound shall be the bonds of brotherhood and love. With this pledge, we, the class of '58, go forth, grateful for all that has been given us, determined to play our part in the great adventure of this new age.
