CU lysses-Tennyson? Forty-nine is a magic word in American history, for this was the year when covered wagons moved westward, carrying thousands of pioneers in search of gold. Their pioneering is a golden chapter in America, a chapter filled with courage, great deeds, the tall tales of the new West, with the color and vigor which continue to enhance and enrich our American heritage. Just forty-nine years ago, in Rochester, another group of pioneers answered the challenge of another frontier. We were on the threshold of a great industrial and scientific era, and there was a need for trained workers to participate in the development of this new era. These later Forty-niners fittingly chose the name of a great American inventor for their school and as Edison Technical and Industrial High School set out to blaze a new trail in vocational and industrial education. Today Edison stands on the threshold of a great adventure. There are still worlds to conquer, new trails to blaze. This is the atomic age - the age when men have embarked on the great adventure of conquering the mysteries of space. To the achievement of this .task, we, the present Forty-niners, are urged on by the courage and visions of those earlier Edisonians who have taken part in this great adventure. Edisonians fought and died in two world wars to give us the freedom to think, to save for us the materials with which to build a better world, and to set us the example of courage and vision that will be our inspiration to carry us on our way. To these Edisonians and to their teachers, to the men who fought and died to preserve a free world, we pledge ourselves to carry on their work. We shall seek for a new treasure to be found in building a world of peace and plenty for all men everywhere - a world in which there shall be no barriers of race, creed, or color - a world in which the only bonds by which men are bound shall be the bonds of brotherhood and love. With this pledge, we, the class of '58, go forth, grateful for all that has been given us, determined to play our part in the great adventure of this new age. For his achievements, which merit the greatest praise, For his loyalty to Edison Tech, which is a constant inspiration, For his exemplary leadership and strenuous activity in preparing the way for a greater Edison Tech, For his genuine sympathy with the aspirations and endeavors of student life, For his unselfish and efficient service to Edison Tech, For his friendship and cooperation in our school and its enterprises, This volume of The Edisonian is with deep respect and sincere appreciation, dedicated to Paul K. W. Springer Vice Principal .fir 'Hx To THE Ju E ,958 GR D u TEQ You are members ot a very speciai ciass at Edison. i regard ou as my tirst graduating ciass. CAFETERI STAFF The cafeteria makes available to our stu- dents at minimum cost warm lunches of maxi- mum nutritive value carefully prepared under sanitary conditions and develops upon the part of the students intelligent discrimination in selecting toads. Food is prepared to look and taste as de- licious as possible so that children will eat the right kind. Menus are built around fruits, vegetables and milk because many children do not receive enough of the protective foods at home. Milk is served in as many forms as possible. The food in the lunchroom must be planned not only for students who buy their whole meal but also for those who wish to supplement lunches brought from home. lt must be varied enough to appeal to the hungry student who chooses a light lunch at noon and it must appeal to those patronizing the lunch room every day of the week. The staff in Edison Tech's Cafeteria con- sists ot one trained dietician and eight people. All food and baked goods are prepared just as it would be prepared at home. The Student Council was formed as the legislative branch of the Student Government. This body, elected in the English classes, drafted a constitution stating the purpose of the Student Associa- tion and its three governmental branches. Laws govern- ing the students and the Student Association officers were also entered into the constitution. This year the council is composed of fifty-eight members, one elected by each freshman and sophomore homeroom, and two representing each junior and senior homeroom. With the Student Association president as the presiding officer, the council controls all matters of civic concern to the student body, including school laws, collection and expenditure ot funds, the manage- ment of the service corps, traffic squad and student court as well as all school clubs and activities. In the opinion of the faculty advisor, these work experiences build habits and qualities that make better citizens. hagen, Heigel, Cox, Nancy, Braun, Kraft, Freitag, Toole, Gervasi, Masters, Hayes, Fourth Row: Bouwes, Balch, Gleichauf, Oechsle, McKay, Schmidlin, Singer, Stockslader, Lincourt, Albright, Jankowski, Lewandowski, Fischer, Palumbo. The Service Corps organization is the pupils' own method for the enforcement of law and order about the school. lt is run by the pupils through their own officers elected by them. There are seventy-five boys in the Corps. Applicants must be recommended by their teachers and may be removed from duty for just cause by the faculty advisor. The Service Corps constantly seeks to raise the reputation of the school to an ever higher plane by establishing habits of neatness, order and decency. The Corps is responsible for the enforcement of safety and conduct rules in all parts of the building outside of the classrooms and the shops. Ten points credit toward a school letter can be earned by Service on the Service Corps staff. Mr. Harry J. Sprague is faculty advisor. STUDENT COURT The Edison student body is governed by a set of self-government laws. The Student Association legalizes the code of laws which the Service Corps and the Traffic Squad main- tain. The laws are designed to promote an air of discipline, order and also the insurance of safety. When a violation of these laws occurs an officer of this organization serves the offender with a ticket similar to those used by law en- forcement officials. This courtf Student Courti meets once a week and consists of a judge, four attorneys and a court secretary. An offender appearing before the judge may plead guilty or not guilty. If he pleads guilty, he is sentenced immediately. If he pleads not guilty, he is assigned attorneys and a trial by jury is held the following week, SERVICE CORPS. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY A charter in the National Honor Society was granted to Edison Technical and Industrial High School on May 24, I933. lt is known as the Thomas A. Edison chapter. The purpose of the society is to stimulate a desire on the part of capable students to achieve the best possible scholarship, to render community service, to promote worthy leadership, and to develop the highest type of character. Students are selected on the basis of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Fifteen percent of the senior class and five percent of the junior class are eligible to compete for membership in this society. To meet the requirements for scholarship, a student must maintain at least a B average in all of his major subjects. Between the years l933 - l957, 699 students have been elected to the Thomas A. Edison chapter of the National Honor Society. This carefully selected group of young men has brought honor and distinction to our school and to the communities in which they live. TOP 5 SENIORS I. ENGINEERING CLUB OFFICERS The Engineering Club has long been a tradition at Tech. lt is made up of Junior and Senior Technicals and a few of the high ranking Industrial students. This year, as in the past, we started the year's activities with a large banquet. A field trip to Detroit, Michigan highlighted the year's activities. Dances and movies kept all the members spirits high. This year's Engineering Club has kept Mr. Palermo and the Club officers, Dick Toole, Don Haag, Fred Heigel, Tom Braun, and Dennis Sarfaty really working. Lining up activities was a real job, but the officers came through and gave us a terrific time all year long. THE EDI-TECH STAFF This year marks the 37th year of publication of Edi-Tech as the official newspaper of Edison Technical andflndustrial High School. The school is indeed fortunate in having the facilities of Mr. Stanley Bohrer's Print Shop and the help of his students in publishing the paper. Dennis Sarfaty, Editor, and Fred Heigel, Assistant Editor, are among the eight staff members. Assignments covered by the staff are many items of interest to friends of the school, including: shop news, club functions, sport- ing events, student government news and interviews of new members of Edison's faculty. if L .-. .V L32 ? , fe H a its 3, Q , 5 Q, ' ,Sf Y' A Sf! The movies shown by the Visual Aids Corps provide student and fac- ulty with an excellent educational media as well as entertainment. The members themselves are triply rewarded for, not only do they profit educationally from the films they show, but they gain valuable knowledge of the operations of a film tech- nician and receive school credit in the form of participation points toward a school letter. Classes are formed in October of each year to train new members. The Library Club, made up of student assistants in the library is a service organization in the school, and it offers boys an opportunity to earn credits toward a school letter. More important, however, members of this organization serve as one -of the finest public relations agencies a school can have, for they are con- stantlv advertising the library to their fellow students, and their inter- est and enthusiasm reaches out to stimulate reading interests of others in the school, home and the com- munity. By relieving the librarian of many routine tasks, the student assistants give her more time for her profes- sional work with both teachers and students. On the other hand, it offers the boys an excellent oppor- tunity for on-the-job training, since they perform varied tasks ranging from delivering messages and carry- ing books to reading shelves, charging books, sorting magazines and stamp- ing hooks. The ideas and under- standing which they contribute add spark and life to a school library. SWITCH BOARD CREW Kneeling: Bill Anderson. Bill Newman, Richard Lana, Jim Caternolo, Ernest Morf. I SECTICNA AN CITY CH MPIONS OWLI G l95 The l956-1957 Varsity Bowling Season concluded successfully for Edison when they rolled away with the lnterscho- lastic Championship and Section V Cham- pionship. At times things got tough but all is well that ends well. Being a great team and having done a swell job their efforts will not be forgotten. The final roll off at Elm Hall deter- mined the section winner. It was here that Edison beat Jefferson 310. The 41 points that Edison accumulated during the season ranked high over West's 33 which were in second place in the South Side League. l957-58 BOWLING SQUAD First Row: Kolb, Falzone, Catone, Horf, Menz, Sterner, Gumina, Morf, Masters. The light- weights were handled by Paul Kaminski and Carl Dziedjiech both strong and wiry matmen. The middleweights comprised of Ron Solomon, Joseph Mungeral, Ken Kotwas and Bob Hennessy did much to foster Tech victories. Along with the lightweights and mid- dleweights were the familiar faces of the heavyweights: Ed Juliani, Joe Hasenauer and Doug Albright. These seasoned vet- erans formed a nucleus that again put Edison in contention for a successful season. It was composed of nine hard work- ing boys who were faithful in their athletic responsibilities to the school. Coach Marzullo sees no immediate improvement in the standing of our team unless more freshmen and sophomores come out for the team and stay with it for the remainder of their stay in school. l LOW SCORE WINS Edison Tech 79 Franklin I9 West 37 Edison Tech 39 Charlotte I7 Edison Tech 43 Monroe 25 East 57 Edison Tech 70 Marshall I7 Madison 69 Kneeling: Menz, Andrea, Privitera, Chilson.
