There were many ideas for flying: none of fhem were successful. - lf was a momenfous day in aviafion when on December I7, l903, Orville Wrighf flew fhe pioneer Wrighf Flyer af Kiffy Hawk, Norfh Carolina, winning fhe hisforic honor of being fhe firsf human fo fly an aircraff. Today fhese pioneeraflighfs seem feeble ef- for'rs,buf in i903 fhey were of fremenrdous significance. They proved fhaf man could fly in an aircraff, and in fhe monfhs fo fol- low, ofher daring experimenfers complefed airplanes and flew fhem. . The day of fhe airplane had dawned. Leaders were quick fo see fhe advanfage of aircraff in warfare, for fransporfafion, and for fhe flying of fhe mail.
