C..3 SPEC COLL When the bell sounded at 2:00 p.m. on June 6, 1987, the halls were filled with screaming kids, old papers, mismatched gloves, shoes, etc... Everyone knew it must be the last day of school, which meant NO more books, teachers, or rotten lunches... NO more trying to think of excuses to tell Mac when she'd catch us in the halls. We are free now to go anywhere, at anytime. During summer vacation, not everyone gets to see their classmates or catch up on what they have been doing. A lot of people wake up with the sun, throw on a swimsuit or some shorts, and hit the beach for the day. After soaking up the sun the whole day, they find the big party, where everyone spends the rest of the evening. Everyone has had a great summer and everyone is looking forward to September for another great school year!!! Above Right: Colleen Ripley- Just hangin' around at Camp St. Croix. Bottom Left: Heidi Vosler- Pad . w Homecoming was a .yuV W spirit-filled week. Each a day brought a different type of Tommie Spirit in the way the students dressed. Monday was Harley Day, where the students were dressed in black and leather, Tuesday was Nerd Day; Wednesday was Pajama Day, with the students bringing their favorite stuffed animal; Thursday was Hippie Day; and Friday was the ever popular Blue Gold Day. The variety show and coronation took place on Thursday. Tlic show was impressive and it was followed by the coronation of king Jim Simon-crowned by our last years queen. Tracy Petersen, and queen Paula Varichak-crowned by last year’s king. Jason Novak. The parade was held directly after the coronation with the Senior float taking first place in the float contest. Mac Luka was the parade’s Grand Marshall. The pepfest was held on Friday and the new gym was rockin’ with spirit. Everyone was excited about the football game that night against Henry and the dance that would follow it. The Tommies were pleased by the large crowd size at the game, which included parents and alumni, who showed up to cheer. The Tommies left the Patriots in the dust w ith a score of 14-7. Even though the night was bitterly cold, our Tommies fought a hard battle and won...... As soon as Mae Luka's name was mentioned, the students voted her in unanimously. You may have seen Mae roam the halls for students who are not in class, after all she is a hall monitor. One new girl mentioned, She was the first person I ran into. Or you may have seen her selling candy for organizationnss in the halls. She has been working at Edison for seven years now, and believe it or not, she really enjoys her job. She likes her job here with the students because, There are still quite a few nice kids around. When Mae leaves Edison, she says her most memorable experience at Edison will be the honor of being the 1987 Homecoming Grand Marshall. 12 SENIOR -You disguise yourself because you have to ride the school bus. -You take easy classes to make sure you graduate. -You let underclassmen know you’re better because you’re a senior. -You don't get much sleep because you party all the lime. FRESHMAN -You carry a Trapper Keeper and at least 4 books. -You still can't find the pool on the fourth floor. -You dress up for the first day of school. -You get ready for bed just as your older sister gets ready to go to a party. FREAK -The only reason why you come to school is to skip. -You go crazy because Berman Buckskin is having a sale. -You like fircdrills because you can have a smoke. -You look in your closet and all you see arc black and heavy metal concert t-shirt. -The school wouldn’t be the same without you. BAND GEEK -You get up early on a concert day to polish your instrument. -You don't walk to your classes, you march. -You drum on your desk without realizing it. -You’re not afraid to show school spitiL or don't “7 A 4ML w come at all. t What ever hap- pened to individualism? U Many people talk about being ourself’ so you can broaden your horizons. But in high school, people don’t seem to be interested in this idea, they tend to go in groups. It’s easy to spot these groups because each develops certain traits and mannerisms which separate them from other groups. Then stereotyping begins. This is what Webster has to say about it: ster e o«type (rt)-a standardized mental picture that is held in common by members of a group and that represents an oversimplified opinion, affective attitude, or uncritical judgment Here arc some examples of stcreotypes--any look familiar? Note: If you don’t seem to belong in any of these, consider yourself an individual. Or maybe you’re a pan of each, well . . . then you’re well-rounded. Also, we’d like to thank our models : Kristin Corbett, Chad Pelzl, Joshua Fuzzy Ploog, and 10 JOCK -Your class schedule is auto, graphic arts, woodshop, study hall, physical education leadership (in other words, gym aide), and weight training. -You buy all your shirts a size too small to show off your muscles. -You give the school someone to be proud of when you win, and someone to support when you lose. NERD -You and your friends arc asked to star in Revenge of the Nerds Pari III. -Your pants arc 3 inches too short -You wear t-shirts that say - I love snakes. -Your idea of fun is watching Channel 2 specials. BROWN NOSER -You bring an apple to the teacher for no reason. -You rtin little errands. -You tell Marchuk that he's lost weight. -Everyone in class likes you because you're the first to volunteer answers they don't have. BARBIE DOLL -You don’t participate in gym because you might break a nail. -Your index finger is discolored because you're always twisting your hair around it. -Your favorite word is um. -You arc convinced social gatherings just aren't the same without you. Any event connected with Edison, you can bet she played a large part in organizing it. Along with all the extracurricular activities, she teaches Edison’s Spanish classes. This has been her job for the past 30 years. She enjoys being with students here at Edison to stay so involved for so long. All of us here at Edison truly appreciate her dedication to this school!! We all would like to say thank you with this dedication. Sophie, you're the best! Sophie Boutsioukous is a woman of action. Not only docs she tell kids to travel and see the world, she does it. Sophie inspires many students by her example, not her sage of words of advice. Words are not a fitting tribute to such a fine teacher and friend. The tribute is that endless stream of alumni who seem to file in and out of Sophie's little cooking room. The teacher whom students always come back to see, whose opinion matters most, and whose adivice is most often sought, is Sophie. Students love and respond to a teacher who genuinely cares. In Sophie, Edison students have been blessed for thirty years. -Dan Raff 16 Most students know her as Sophie' and she has been a teacher and friend to countless students. She expects students to stretch physically and academically because she has a vision for Edison students. -Saundra Rowell She's a great person; I admire her a lot! - Rachel Olsen Sophie has been one of my greatest inspiration since I've been at Edison! -Scott Kennedy She has a lot of energy! The best teacher I've ever had. -Toya Smiley She's a really nice person who cares a lot about people. -Jay Vandermyde Sophie is an inspiring teacher and a wonderful person. She will be dearly missed here at Edison, and wish her happiness in everything that she does. -James Simon TWIST AND SHOUT.... ....WELCOME DANCE '87 fe The 1987-88 Welcome dance was held on Friday, September 11 in the old boys gym. To entertain us for the evening was the WLOL sound and light show. They put on a good list of all the latest tunes that rocked the old gym. The dance was sponsored by the Pom-Toms, as it has been for many years. The dance began at 8:(X) and, tor those who lasted, the dance ended at 11:00. The dance was a great start for the new year. It was a lot of fun, but also very tiring for many people who danced their feet off. The constant wiping of sweat from heads was a problem for just about everyone who attended. Robbie Thompson and Holly Tcslow dance the night away. Cupid Strikes Again! Ground Zero Productions got the Sweetheart Dance off to a great start. The dance was held on November 12, 1988 at 8:00 p.m. With the Pom-Toms organizing the dance, the feet were kept moving, the hips swinging, and the faces glowing with excitement. Although the dance broke the tradition of being a couples dance, it was still a smashing hit. Teddy Ferraro and Jenny Wolfe were crowned Sweetheart king and queen, which seemed to satisfy all of the Sweetheart fans. The music kept the people rockin', and the dance floor was shakin'. At 11:00 p.m., the music stopped, and everyone had to depart from the Hot Rockin' Edison High School. Above: Devinna Satcr shows off her moves all over the dance floor. Below: Cha Lee Vang, Sokhannaka Chan, Tom Miskowiec, Jenny Wolfe, Ted Ferraro, Kelly Dziedzic, Chris Clark, Julie Kobow, Scott Kennedy. 20 Above: Dressing up to get down! Right: Jerry shows Blandon and Todd his funky moves. 21 Below: Barb and Shah ram praclicc the farm ritual of piggyback riding. Hey All You Daisy Maes and Little Abners Wasn't this year’s Sadie Hawkin's dance, sponsored by the Student Council, a real barnstorm? Almost as much fun as the comic strip Little Abner which was written by A1 Capp. When you get to the dance (willing or unwilling) you split from your date and run. Everywhere you look, little Haycrds arc running around trying to escape their would be wives. Eventually, they arc caught by those notorious shifty eyed sheriffs, who arc using warrants to catch these poor saps so the can dump them in jail, when this happens you're in BIG TROUBLE, the only way out is to do what it says on the warrant. The main tiling on the girl's mind is getting hitched. The man doing the hitchcn', is Marrin' Sam who this years was played by the ever popular Kcvcn Erickson. 11c performs the ceremony, reads the guy his last rights and marries them. After the service he gives a genuine metal ring and certificate to the pair. So the girl can show off her man later, David Bank Studio furnished the wedding pictures. The music was provided by an Edison graduate, Doug Radcmachcr. He had his own sound and light show, so when everyone finally got done with all the goofn around, his show lured everyone out on the dance floor. It was a great night for everyone, all went home, and lived happily ever after. 22 Above: John and Heidi face trouble when the ring doesn’t fit. Li'L ABMEC Left: ShcIIic begged lo the sheriff to get Mark out. Under the Mistletoe The Mistletoe dance, sponsored by the Edison Flagline was kickin’ on December 18, 1987, in the old boys gym. Admissson was $3.00 with a special ’bring a record and get a buck back.' The students came with a supply of mistletoe, ready to seek out their Christmas wish. They then rapped the night away with D.J. Travers Tron of KMOJ. Some students left the dance early because they did not agree with the choice of music played, but the students who stayed had a great time. Overall the dance could be considered a success to the students who got their Christmas wish. Above: Bridget, Twinkie and Nikki are three wild and crazy girls! Be Sheik, Go Greek was the theme of the Sno-Daze week. The weeks’ theme was in honor of Thomas Geankoplis, the legendary Social Studies teacher and grcck scholar. Sno-Daze was originally planed for the week of January 18-22, but was postponed a week because the old boys gym was being repainted. As tradition has it, the Student Council sponsored the Sno-Daze dance and carnival. In addition to the many activities, the special event this year was the softball tournament held at Jackson Square. The tournament consisted of the four classes playing, with the Frcshmcn-Scnior team winning. This activity was sponsored by the National Honor Society. Spirit week consisted of: Monday- Hat and Tie day, Tuesday- Summer day, Wednesday-Minnesota day, Thursday- Toga day, and last but not least, Friday- Blue Gold day. The variety show on Friday was a success with many talented acts. The high-light of the show was the crowning of King Jason Corbett and Queen Brenda Albrecht. To cap off the week, Sno-Daze came to an end Friday night with the dance and carnival. The Hip-Tones pleased the crowd with a variety of music. Many students tried their skill at various games of chance and ate snacks sponsored by school clubs and organizations. Schultz’s Peanuts characters. Auditions were held on January 21, 1988 and the cast was then selected. Practices were held everyday until show date. The dates set for the musical were March 10, 11, and 12. This was the first production since the new sound and light system was installed in the auditorium. I have had great times and have continued my educational goals. After high school, I plan to study Engineering, but I am undecided as to where I will be going. For me. the future will hopefully hold a successful career, and the support of a loving family. -Jim Simon Looking back on being a student at Edison will probably be one of the best memories in my life. My four years here and the friendships 1 have will never be replaced or forgotten. The most worthwhile goal I have attained while being a student is the maturity I have gained since being a freshman. I think that one can leant through schoolwork and even more through experiences in high school. I plan on attending college at the University of Minnesota Institute of Technology and major in engineering. -Tom Trentmcl A memorable achievement of mine at Edison was winning the Region V cross-country ski meet and making it to the state meet while having fun with everyone on the ski team. After graduation, I plan to go to Gustavus Adolphus College. I will probably go into the health field, and when I grow up , I’m thinking of being a physical therapist, a nurse, or possibly going into the foreign service. 1 give much thanks to my parents, Mr. Kovach and Sophie for giving me support, and help through the years. -Monica Peters Edison High School has given me some of the best times of my life. This school's business programs have helped me get a job at an insurance company, my single greatest feat while being here. All of die teachers have taught me the true meaning of school; studying for myself and not for high grades. Edison has also helped me find friends for life. My goals for the future include going to medical or engineering school, and the unrealistic dream of traveling into space. For now, I guess I'll concentrate on the realistic ones. -Venkateswara Kesavalu During ihc four years that I have spent at Edison, I have enjoyed being a member of the Soccer, Wrestling, and Tennis teams. I have met new friends, and have appreciated the help and support that I have received from teachers. 1 firmly believe that Edison has prepared me for the future. Next year, I plan on entering a university and studying Chemical Engineering. As of now, I am undecided at exactly which college I will be attending next year. -John Kramarcz.uk My four years at Edison have been a blast. Through my participation in athletics, the Edison Express, and Marching band I have gained many experiences that will long be remembered. After graduation, I will go on to further my education at either Macalastcr or Hamlinc, where I will be majoring in Mass Communication and or Journalism. Credit should be given to my friends, family, coaches, and teachers for contributing greatly to my success in high school. I would not relive my high school experiences, as they hold loo many memories, good and bad. They have taught me many valuable lessons that will benefit me in later life. -David Carlson Since being at Edison, the greatest honor I received was being chosen to represent our school as a Student Ambassador to Israel in my junior year. I had a fantastic time, and I learned a lot about the world outside of the United States. I'd like to thank all of the great teachers who have helped me work toward my goals, and. my swim team pals, who have helped me create long lasting memories. I plan to attend Gustavus Adolphus College, with a lajor in Accounting and a minor in inglish. -Cathy Lindcll I’ll never forget this year at Edison. I have made many new friends and have gotten involved in extracurricular activities including Soccer, Cross-Country Skiing, Golf, and Tennis. I would like to thank all of the teachers who have helped me. I think that Edison has great spirit and I have immensely enjoyed myself. After this year, I still have two more years of high school in Sweden and after that I'll attend college in Sweden, and hopefully play professional golf. -Magnus Bcrgquist When reflecting upon my four years at Edison, the most prominent memories I have arc the close friendships, my understanding parents, the fine teachers, and the Academy of Finance. I credit my friends, parents, and teachers who have helped me grow through their acceptance, opinions, support, and criticism. I am grateful for the opportunity to have the Finance magnet that has expanded my knowledge in the financial world and that was influcncial on my decision of future plans. I plan to attend an accredited Business College and major in Financial Management. I also hope to obtain the status of a yuppie and retire at an early age. -Justin Karkoc My four years at Edison have been a very rewarding experience. I have learned a great deal from my teachers in class, as well as through sports and other extracurricular activities. I am very proud of being selected to participate in the Aincrican-Isracl Exchange Program, as it gave me the opportunity to learn about a different culture and way of life. I plan on attending a small Liberal Arts college, with an emphasis on humanities. -Chris Clark 57 Kristen Biggest Brownie 'indberg Dean Anderson 58 Best AU Around Mike Munson Jennifer Wolfe Energy P'u Eryan Heather Veteran Gleaming Grins Ted Ferraro Tina Cloud Clumsy Clutz Frank Tuclick Nina Bergstrom Most Talented Virginia Thoraldson Danial Fowlds 60 Beauty and Braun Rebecca Ingcrsoll Jim Simon Best Dressed Tewabech Molla Paul Kusmierz Fabulous Flirt Ann Marie Anderson Tony Jasicki 61 Lucious Locks Brenda Albrecht Blandon Granger 62 Little Rascals Heidi Voslcr Tom Miskowiec Sure Success Monica Peters Justin Karkoc Personality Plus Julie Johnson Stefen Thielke 63 Gorgeous Gazers Kelly Dziedzic John Risser 64 Most Courteous Rachel Olsen Steve Windhurst Typical Tommie Paula Varichak Scott Kennedy Class Clown Craig Sporlcin Holly Teslow 65 MAGIC. Twins have been popular this year, not only our Minnsota Twins winning the World Series, but also we have six sets of Twins who p an to retire ol' Edison in '88.When you walk down the hall, and you happen to come across one of twins, which one do you think it is? Could it be Jennifer or maybe it's Juanita. Yea or Dlia? Would you make the mistake of saying Hi to Steve to Mike or get Kelly and Kristie mixed up? Or maybe you thought you were talking to Chris when it was really Cory. To us it may seem difficult to dicipher which is which since they are identical in looks, but in their eyes, they arc as different as can be. Most twins confess that they were dressed alike as children. Only until we were four though. said Steve, or was it Mike? When asked if they could read each other's mind or feel what the other is feeling physically, Chris replied, No, if I hit Cory, I don't feel a thing, except happy! and Blia look so identical, sometimes their relatives get them confused!! Twins seem to have a special kind of relationship. Although they have their likes and dislikes, all seem to have the same friends and considers the other their best friend. Jcnifc VltQ r and Jua, julie and Susan are the only fraternal twins in the senior class, and nave been attending the University of Minnesota this year. 67 68 '.S 69 BABY JESSICA On Wednesday, October 19, 1987, Jessica McClure, an 18 month old girl, was playing outside when she fell into an abandoned well in her backyard. For three days and two nights she was trapped in a 12 inch wide space 22 feel below the surface. Drilling experts came quickly and dug a shaft next to the well. The drilling had taken longer than expected but by Friday, paramedics were able to go down. After 58 1 2 hours, Jessica was freed, fixed to board, and pulled up to safely. Surprisingly, Jessica suffered no major injury although she had lost four pounds and showed signs of dehydration. Doctors had to perform surgery on her right foot because not enough blood had reached it. The foot was saved and put in a cast. Jessica recovered quickly and is back to being a spunky little girl. 70 TWINS MAGIC! In the fall of 1987, the Twins brought victory back to Minnesota with their win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the final game of the World Series. With a disappointing season the previous year and the worst road game record, many people felt it would be impossible for the Twins to even make a showing in the American League Championship Series. But with their talent and skill, the Twins beat the Detroit Tigers and were on their way to the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Frank Viola's 4 - 2 victory in the seventh game earned him the Scries MVP and won the Twins the title. They were congratulated with a parade that started in downtown Minneapolis, went on to downtown St. Paul, and ended with a rally at the state capitol. The treaty called for the removal of436 American warheads and 1,575 Soviet warheads from Europe and the rest of the world. On October 19, now considered Black Monday , the Dow Jones took a plunging 508-point drop within six hours of trading. Not since the crash of the early thirties had the stock market suffered such a loss. The Freshmen Choir is a prep choir that is open for all freshmen who are interested in choral activity. This|| helps prepare them to sing parts in songs and to perform in the Concert Choir the following year. The Tommie Tones First learn the basics of singing and the scales at the beginning of the year. Rita Andrescik teaches the students the counting and the notes of the songs, then puts them into two groups, one singing melody and the other harmony. After the Choir has the song altogether, Rita adds choreography to Liven it up on the stage when it is time for a concert. The 1987-88 school year brought forth several changes to the Edison High School Marching Band. To name a few, a new band room was finished June 4, 1987. The marching band also suffered from dwindling numbers and having to teach music to all new members. Despite all the problems, on June 9. 1987 the band hit the streets for another summer marching season. They practiced Tuesday and Thursday evenings for three hours at a time. On top of the practice schedule, there were grueling sectionals held during times of some of the most agonizing summer heat. To say the least, this year was special for the band — they not only had to prepare for the marching season, but also represent the State of Minnesota for the celebration of the Biccntcnial of our Nation's Constitution. Their tour out cast took them to New York. Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. Besides the sweltering heat out cast, the band had to put up with two major bus break downs, which packed 900 people into one already overcrowded bus. The problem was solved 20 miles down the road by a cool 12 ft deep pool. After all the trials and tribulations, the Edison High School Marching Band took their awards rcpecttfully and marched out of the summer V season and into the school year with the pride that only Edison has. If it wasn't Gary Hanson pushing and motivating, it was visits from Pat Hickey, the Jostens representative. This year’s yearbook got off to an early start with the help of Dana Jcnnrich, Joyce Gavino, Kim Dalros and Dean Anderson attending a yearbook camp held August 1-4 at the college of St. Thomas. They spent their days working on the ladder, copy writing, and designing layouts. Dean Anderson brought back a third place trophy for his layout design and Kim Dalros received an honorable mention. The yearbook staff consisted of 25 tenth thru twclth grade students. The majority of these students worked during second hour as a yearbook class and the rest spent many hours after school trying to beat the deadlines. Mr. Hanson was the yearbook adviser for the second year. He did his best to stay out of the way, and let the editors, Joyce Gavino and Dana Jcnnrich. to take control. However, he was always there everyday after school to help anyone with their pages. Being on the staff meant a lot of hard work and dedication. Everyone found that out when they had to give up many afternoons, Saturdays, vacations and part of a day at the Hanson house during the winter break. Overall the staff worked well together which made the yearbook fun to produce, as well as a good learning experience. m WZ.T- Top: Dana with the look of determination, Kim, why did I ever take this job? Kathy Browne —- — Ill Cosmotology Data Processing The Cosmotology magnet is a fantastic opportunity for career development or for getting a head start on a career. The students study the science and art of caring for and beautifying the hair, skin, and nails. We do hair shaping, styling, permanent waving, coloring of hair, scalp and hair treatments, facials, make-up, and manicuring. As a Junior in cosmotology you take a two-hour block and as a senior you have a three-hour block. After becoming a licensed comotologist, there are many different jobs you can qualify for or become a specialist in some specific field. Some of the jobs available would be Esthetician, Beautician, Manicurist, Beauty Writer, Cosmetic Sales Representative, Cosmotology Instructor, Hair Colorist, Makeup Artist, Permanent Wave Technician, Salon Manager, or Salon Owner. These are only some of the different jobs possible. This is a job is which always changing as do the times, styles, and methods. It's exciting! The Data Processing Magnet offers students the opportunity to explore the data processing career area while learning computer languages used in the information systems field. Students begin in the magnet as freshman taking beginning classes in business including typing or record keeping. As sophomores. Introduction to Computers in Business is offered to help familiarize the student with prepared software commonly used by small business as well as in personal use. When the student is a junior, a two hour block offers a number of applications in BASIC programming to enable the student to learn a skill and an awareness of what is involved in a programming career. Following the beginning programming block, the student advances to a more individualized approach using COBOL, PASCAL, and RPG II. Also, students are encouraged to go on various field trips to businesses to see the wide variety offered by the data processing career. Room 231, the Data Processing Magnet Center offers Apple Ilecomputers, Hewlett Packard terminals connected to the main frame at the Minneapolis Public Schools Administration Building and Macintosh. The student will have the preliminary programming skills to advance quickly in post-high school education at either a vocational school or in a four year computer science major. Students interested in a career in computer science will need to gain additional educaction to meet employer expectations and qualifications. Any students with a strong grade point average and an interest in programming as a career, should take the magnet. In addition, students who may have an interest in Business Administration and Business Management will have the opportunity to leam about a career related to management. 112 Top: Donelle works away on her Apple lie. It is a program designed for juniors and seniors interested in economics, banking services, investment services, and finantial services. The program is co-sponsored by the Minneapolis Board of Education and IDS American Express. As a result of it's high demand it is now also available at Roosevelt High School. Besides classes students participate in a stock market game in competition with both Edison and Roosevelt teams. During the summer between the junior and senior years, students are given the opportunity to work for six weeks at local banks and investment houses. The class plans a trip to another Academy during the senior year. This year the seniors traveled to New York in March. Representing Edison will be Justin Karkoc, Mike Gordon, Paul Kusmicrz, Tewabech Molla, Pat Sporlein and Stephen Thielke. These students are given the chance to meet with ten other Academies around the United States. They will also stay in New York for four days and visit Wall Street, some investment houses, the World Trade Center and attend a Career Conference at Baruch College. Cooking and working with food provides a challenge and a lot of physical activity and teaches many life skills as well as giving students an early start toward exploring the many types of career opportunities in the food industry. It will help develop skills needed for entry level employment and career advancement in this third largest industry in the United States. It's a great start for students who aspire toward a career as head chef in a restaurant or hotel, restaurant manager or owner, food research or development for a major corporation, food inspection or food sales. Credits earned in this class can be transferred toward post high school classes at the Minneapolis Technical Institute. Students in the Food Service Magnet explore and develop skills by running a restaurant in Room 116 at Edison where they plan, cook and serve varied and exciting menu items. Field trips to explore and eat in various area restaurants broaden their appreciation of the basics being learned in the magnet. Students find that the time flies by and that they are always busy and challenged by the day's lessons. Left: Another excellent manicure is accomplised. Aabcrg. Shawn Abron, Rakia Aguilar. Cross Country is a sport that requires endurance, strength and discipline. The Girls and Boys teams have found this to be very true while running for edison this fall. Many miles arc run each week, as well as fast interval work, in order to prepare for every mecL The runners ran many challenging races this year. Corey Erickson and David Swanson met and conquered many hills in a race in Duluth. Placing well in the Miller Relays at Lake Nokomis was the relay team of David Morgan, Jean Rotondo, David Carlson and Julia Kobow. At Winsted Patti Shcascr, Josh Ploog and Sam Rogers found out what running in the cold and wind is like. New members Makram Tolbert, Scott Pearson and Yonnas Zemedhin showed great performances in their first CC running season. Ron Barker and Kevin Hclvcy have shown good potential for being excellent runners in the future. Under the coaching of Arthur Maillct (Boys) and Douglas Clausen (Girls) the teams ran well in the City meet at Lake Nokomis. Placing 12th for the girls was Kobow with her best lime this season. Many Boys team members had their best 5k times. Morgan and Carlson placed in the lop 25 in the Varsity race. Dark clouds, cold rain, gusty winds and snow were threatening but come race time the skies began to clear. Under the cold conditions the Boys team finished 6th in the Varsity run. Hard work, dedication and determination brought the team runners many personal bests. Next years' Boys team will benefit from the talent, experience and number of this years' under-classmen. With a good turnout for the Girls team next year they could have a very fine season. The Edison Record would like to congratulate these runners for an excellent season! WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS This year ihc 1987 football team regained the bell. The bell is given annually to the Minneapolis City Conference Champs, The Tommmics were undefeated in the regular season and ranked 5th in the state. They also set a new school record by winning ten games in one season. In the first game of the season the Tommies Dominated a tough St. Paul Johnson 19 - 0. There next foe was Minneapolis North. North has always played our Tommies tough, this game was no different. They held us close till the 4th Quarter but, we scored two quick touchdown's to win 13 - 0. Rochester Mayo was up next for the mighty Tommies. Our offense had a little trouble getting the ball into the end zone. Finally in the 4th quarter Dean Anderson found Adam Johnston in the end zone to break the game open. They went on to win 13-0. They returned home to face a tough Washburn team. But the game turned out to be easier then cxccptcd.Chris Clark helped the Tom's explode offensively by scoring two TD's. Other scores were by Mike Munson, Johnston and Jim Simon. The defense gave up the first score of the year in this game. The defense had shut out everybody for the last three games. South was up next for the Tommies. The Tigers had been picked to win the conference in the prcscason. They had been living up to that when they beat Roosevelt in the beginning of the season. But. they made one big mistake before they came over to our school. The night before the game some of there students came over to our school and spray painted all over the press box, stands, gym and field, the spray paint all over our field made us more psych to kick there. , said Co-Captain Dave Drabczak. The game turned out to be another defensive battle. The turning point in the game came when South went for the 2 - point conversion and the mighty Tom's stopped them. The Tom’s only touchdown was scored by Chuck Gallagher from a pass by Dean Anderson .The final score was 7 - 6. Above: Tom Tremmel returns his interception, as the rest of his teammates block. I haven’t seen this much spirit in this school in the last twenty years said Sophie Boulsiokos. It was exciting cheering with all the alumni cheerleaders for our awesome football team. said Traci Jorgensen and Tanya Sikorski. The game turned out to be another easy victor)1. Mike Munson and Joe D .icd .ic helped the Tom’s secure a 21 - 7 victory. Roosevelt has always been one of Edison biggest rivals and this game wasn’t going to be any different. This game was the most thrilling game of my high school football career said Adam Johnston. You guys should be so up for this game. How many times in your life arc you going to be playing for the city title, undefeated regular season, playing at Roosevelt’s homecoming and playing against Roosevelt. said Head coach Jim Carr. The Tom’s took a 14 -0 lead into half time on scores by D .icdzic and a pass from Munson to Gallagher. In the second half the Teddies scored on a mix up in the scondary. They completed a pass for 33 yd touchdown. Our defense then held strong for the rest of the game. Tom Trommel helped seal the victory with an interception w’ith 5:34 remaing in the game. The final score was 14 - 7. The Tom’s had won die game and the city title. 'Hie next game was against the Southwest Lakers. We played them on a cold and sleet filled day. The offense came to life in this game scoring 21 points before halftime. The defense held diem to only 80 yds for total offense. But, they scored on a 98 yd kick off return. The final score of the game was 28 - 6. The Tom’s entered the playoffs undefeated and ranked fifth in the state. 'Die first game in the playoffs was against North. A lot of fans turned out on this cold day for this game. The Tom’s scored easily and often. While on the other side of the ball the defense was recording it’s fourth shutout. The final score of the game w-as 24 - 0. The Tom’s then hosted Roosevelt. This was the second time we had to face them this year. Wc fell if we could shut down Andre Harris and hold them to 10 points or less wc would win!! said Senior Peter Zcnk. The game turned out to be a closely fought battle between two good football teams. The Tom's scored first on Joe D iedzic’s 4 yd run. The extra point attempt was no good and the Tom’s only lead 6 - 0. But, on the Teddies next possesion Jim Starr ran the ball down to the 5 156 - Football yd line on an option play. Two plays later Andre Harris took it in for a touchdown. Their extra point was good and they lead 7 - 6. The second half turned out to be a defensive battle. Neither team could get a sustained drive going. But. with 3:00 remaining in the game the Tom's started to move the ball down the field. On third down from the 17 yd line, Dzicdzic faked like he was going to run but instead he threw a pass to Adam Johnston who leaped up between two defenders to score the winning touchdown. The stands emptied immediately after the game because all the fans ran out on to the field to celebrate the victory. We had to ruse to the occasion and we were successful in that task. said John Hupp and Steve Bums. The Tom's next game was against Top Ranked Richfield. 7,000 fans showed up to cheer on there respected teams. The game turned out to be filled with lots of mistakes. Both teams were getting a lot of penalties and turning the ball over. Unfortumatcly, the Tom's turned the ball over more. The Spartans took a 12 - 0 lead into halftime. On the Tom's first possesion of the second half Mike Munson threw a touchdown pass to Adam Johnston. The Touchdown was called back because of an illegal-shift penalty. That penalty broke the back of the Tom's. Richfield went on to win 28 - 8. The biggest reason for such a succcsful year was the return of twenty - nine seniors. This help a great deal because they were such a experienced unit. The whole defensive unit for the Tom's were Seniors. Only 5 underclassmen started for the Tommies. The defense was 1 in the state for yards given up and third in points given up. There were no seniors on the team, so all the gymnasts will be returning next year if they continue. The 1987-88 Hockey Team had one of its best years ever. Coaches Tim Cornwell, John Banisky, and Pat Pariscau were very pleased with the progress the team made over the year. They finished with a record of 16-8. The team accomplished many goals. The Tommies took second place in the Minneapolis City Conference behind Washburn. In both games against Washburn, the guys worked very hard but didn’t quite come out on top. Also, a crushing 4-3 loss, to South early in the season, didn’t help. One of the great accomplishments of the season was beating Southwest twice. It marked the first lime Edison had beaten Southwest in 54 years. The scores were 6-5 in overtime, with senior captain Bob Stone, scoring the winning goal and 4-3 with Jason Birmingham scoring the hat trick. Outside the conference, the team had games against many good teams. Such as St. Paul Johnson, Woodbury, and Highland Park. They were 7-4 in non - conference play. With the regular season over, the team looked forward to the regionals with high hopes. The goal all year was to make it to the Met Sports Center(scmi-finals). They got the 6 seed in the region. This meant a game with South. The Tommies once again came from behind just as they have all year to win 5-3. In the next round, the opponent was Willmar. It was a very close game with a half an hour delay because of a broken plcxyglass on the boards. The Tommies were down 4-3 when sophomore Matt Podkopaez scored to tie the game. The game was sent into overtime and senior scoring sensation, Jason Birmingham, scored to win the game. Finally, the goal of making it to the Met was now at hand. The next opponent was state-ranked Bloomington Kennedy. They were highly favored over the Tommies. The Toms took a 1-0 lead on Joe Dziedzic’s goal. Kennedy tied the game at the end of the first period. The game stayed a 1 -1 tic for two periods. The Tommies were playing an incredible style of hockey. But, in the third period, Kennedy scored 6 unanswered goals and Edison lost 7-1. The game was great and quite an accomplishment for the players who played their hearts out before a crowd of 5,000+ fans. Individual highlights over the season were Jason Birmingham All-Conference, 58 points, and Prep Player of the Week. Other All-Conference selections were Chad Pclzl and Brett Maxey. Honorable Mention selections were Tom Kotchcn and John Hupp. There were also four players that had over 30 points. They were senior Brett Maxey, junior John Hupp, and sophomores Joe Dziedzic and Matt Podkopaez. Hockey-175 SCOREBOARD The team did really great! They lost their starting pitcher, Sharri Knops, which made a big difference towards the team. Captains Linda Dumas and Stephanie Jones were strong and encouraging leaders. The other members of the varsity team were, Karen Kraska (11), Dawn Halloway (11), LaCrissha Walton (11), Holly Ericson (11), Tracy Nellermoc (10), Lisa Weigler (10), Chris Jensen (11), and Trina White (10). Jackie Hanson, the coach motivated the team in practice and in games and that helped the team a lot. With many returning lettermen, the team has hopes of becoming city-champs next year. This years tennis icam had it's share of ups and downs; winning some they were expected to lose and losing some they were planning to win. With only two returning seniors and two newcomers to the varsity squad, they were a young and inexperienced team. That left it up to Captain Mark Vandermyde to lead the team to a winning season. Although he didn't have the success he did the previous year, his performance was still better than enough for him to be voted to the All-Conference team once again. Also contributing to the success of the team was the new addition of (then eighth grade, now freshman) Ken Zahorski. Taking over the No. 4 singles position midway through the season, he came up with some key wins to do his part in the victories for the team. With more practice and experience in the coming years, he promises to be a strong force for Edison Tennis in the future. As for next year, Coach Bill Kostick is very optimistic, With five returning seniors this year, (consisting of Mark Lamont, John Risscr, Paul Kusmicrz, Justin JUICE Karkoc, and John Kramarezuk) we'll be much more experienced. I believe that these guys have the potential to beat the always lough teams, South and Washburn and become a contender for the City-Conference title. Field events such as shot put, disc, and the long jump, under the direction of Pat, our assistant coach, had a super season also, with most of the participants being new to the team. The team showed great talent and arc hoping for the best year ever in 1988. The long practices and hard workouts paid off in the end with die distance medaly team winning a medal in the city meet. Many girls also went to llic finals in their individual events. At the River Falls Invitational meet it was intcnsly hot. Although it was so hot, many people did exceptionally well. Such as Monica Peters, who came home with two medals. Rachel Olson, although she was ill, did exceptionally well in the two mile and got her best time ever. While there, artist Vicky Sclichnow, invited by Jostens, helped design the cover with the themc, Nobody Tames the Tommies . Our book was printed in Topeka. Kansas by Jostens Publishing Company. They were represented by Pat Hickey and Ann Dougan, who helped us with ideas and encouragement throughout the year. The Wizard copy was set on Macintosh computers and copy was printed on the taxer writer plus. The type was set in 6-18point limes, on Microsoft word 3.01. Graphics were designed using Superpaint and various art disks and then combined on Pagcmakcr. Staff members designed original layouts and pasted them on 9 x 12 mounting boards, making our staff totally responsible for the final product David Banks Studios photographed the senior pictures and Brett Gordon, their staff photographer, photographed the special events and activiics held in school. The underclassmen and staff pictures were photographed by Lifctouch National School Studios. Other photography was developed and printed by staff members in Edison’s darkroom. Books were sold for $23 during a two week sale held in October, with a free Tommie Bandana given to those who paid in full. Plastic covers and gold imprints were extra -covers SI and imprints $3. The Wizard wassold for $28 after Christmas and sales lasted until after the shipment date. 87 - 88 WIZARD STAFF ADVISOR: Gary B.
