With work being done on the auditorium, the variety show wouldn’t be held until almost two months later. It will always be remembered as the snowless Sno-Daze. Regardless of what month, Sno-Daze would have virtually been a snowless one because the 86-87 winter was practically tropical, for Minnesota, with very little snow cover. In spite of the changes, Sno-Daze went on as it traditionally has at Edison High School. The week consisted of opposite sex day, day of darkness, twin day. summer day. and blue gold day. On Wednesday. Dan Fowlds won the snowball eating contest (the Hostess variety). The week ended with the variety show and coronation as Dave Preese and Andrea Kozlak were crowned king and queen. Later that evening we had the traditional Sno-Daze carnival and dance featuring Edison alumni, the band, the Hip-Tones. Ilf'S 1II IK IE HEAVEN Top: Andrea Kozlak is crowned by last years king. The 1986-87 school year saw a dramatic change in the Edison hallways. The colors gradually changed from a puke green to a beautiful blue and gold, our school colors. The lockers wore being replaced! The old green lockers have watched generations of Tommies walk by and nest behind their doors. They have been there before the beginning of time. But now, after years of being kicked, punched, graffittied. spit on, and set fire to. the lockers were slowly being replaced by younger, stronger, more sturdy ones that you could no longer set your books on top of. but hey. you can't have everything. The students immediately moved into these colorful lockers with an easy transition. Some people found themselves among new neighbors and others were stuck with the same ones as before. If you ask, most students would probably prefer the new lockers to the old. They brighten the hallways and make learning a much more enjoyable experience. IN w iir in ir in ie NIEWI! By looking at the graffitti on the locker door you can tell my innermost feelings. It's totally me. The swamp, the old green lockers. It’s an unorganized mess that totally reflects my personality. I want to major in Elementary Education. My fondest memories were being in the summer marching band and my senior year. My parents and teachers have had the greatest influence on me. I wish to thank them for their guidance, support, and help during my four years at Edison. Jill Beeksma I have many great memories of the time I spent at Edison. I will especially remember all the friends I made here and my two years cheering on the squad. I'd like to thank all my teachers for helping me learn and grow, and my family for always supporting me. Next year I plan on going to Mankato State and majoring in either pre-law or education. Carla Fjerstad My greatest memories of Edison will be the teachers who were interested in me as a person, not just as a person who should get good grades and all the extra-curricular activities, choir pop choir tours, and musicals. After Edison I plan on attending Macalester College in St. Paul where I'll be studying Broadcasting, Journalism, Mass Communications, and some type of theatre. My advice to upcoming seniors is that how much you know or to what capacity you have the ability to learn, doesn't matter unless you apply yourself to each and everything you wish to achieve. Becky Jahnke Though four years have past, it seems like yesterday that we walked down these halls for the first time. My fondest memories over the years were of the Marching Band. Those summers were the greatest! Those days are gone now, but they did teach me a lot of lessons to go out into the real world. This summer I'll be starting school at Horst Education Center for Cosmetology and I have hopes to attend the U of M for psychology. Carrie Glebner Looking back over the past years many memories, both good and bad, come to mind. Cramming for finals, friends, and too much homework are the most prominant. Thanks to the support of many teachers and my parents, they have helped me to grow and expand the abilities that I have. The future has possibilities that I have yet to discover and explore. 6C EDISON TOMMIE i i in lie in ACnClIVCRS Sue O'Reilly The friends I have made and being on the cheerleading squad for two years are my favorite memories of Edison. Next fall. I will attend The College of St. Thomas where I will major in business or journalism. My parents have been the biggest influence in my life. They have encouraged and supported me in whatever I have done. I believe everyone should get involved with school and make the most of their high school years. Veasna Keo While attending Edison, I have had many pleasurable memories such as participating in the math team, the intercultural club, and especially making special friends. I’m planning to go on to post-secondary schooling and major in Accounting. I'd like to thank all the teachers especially Mr. Kocur for all the help he has given me. Darcy Kuha When reflecting upon my four years at Edison, the things that take predominance in my mind are the unforgettable times I had in summer marching band, especially the summer of '85, and my four seasons of cross country skiing. The best thing I received is self-confidence that I'm certain will carry me through life with much success. I will be attending Hamline University and majoring in pre-law and or mathematics. Robin Scandrette My fondest memories of Edison will be of my child care class. It was through my experiences in this class that I decided that I want to be a Kindergarten teacher. Mrs. Busse was a great teacher and the biggest influencer during my years here at Edison. A special thanks for all of her support and encouragement. I am so glad that I was given the opportunity to come to Edison. Before coming here, I didn't even know N.E. Mpls. existed. I will always remember the long soccer practices, the one game we won, and the great friends that I made. Mark Vandermyde I will never forget the warm acceptance I got upon returning to Edison during my junior year. My fondest memories are all the close friendships - old ones that were strengthened and new ones I created toward the end. I must credit Mike Mazyck and all the fine teachers and coaches I've had pushing me. I plan to attend college pursuing music and business, living well and retiring early. I'll remember the Mat Rats, band geeks, Tommie-Boys, football, tennis, a Swedish meatball and all the little Melon-heads. 61I HAUL 'DIF FAME Beauty and Braun Jeff Peterson and Joan Ericksen Little Rascals Dave Preese and Tammy Smith 6? When school starts, Homecoming is just a hop. skip, and jump away. This is one of the drummers favorite times. The Drumline likes to keep the school spirit alive during Homecoming by painting their faces, keeping the cadences tight during the parade, and partying at the game. The summer marching season is a time to look forward to also. At this time, all the rookies learn to march, while everybody memorizes their music. When they are set, they hit the streets and put the rookies to the test. The number of band members may have dropped but the enthusiasm and pride haven't. The band marched in many parades and did well in all the judging. Competition was stiff which called for much hard work and dedication. The band's trip to Detroit Lakes was also a success. They stayed overnight, competed in a parade and enjoyed all the fun things the Lakes had to offer. You may have also (on many occasions) seen and heard the band play at all the pep-fests, a majority of the football games, and various other sports such as basketball and wrestling. The marching band also played a major role in Edison's 1986 Homecoming as the first unit in the traditional parade. With Reginald Johnson as director of the marching band, the band will continue performing for school events and competing in summer parades. The Drum Major. Richard Holden and Majorette. The Concert Choir performs 4 concerts a year and goes on a 3 day tour singing at nursing homes, schools, and hospitals. The year starts off with the Fall Concert, which consists of many modern pieces and soloists. Next comes the Christmas Concert, the Touch of Class Concert, and then the Spring Concert, which is the same one the choir performs on tour. The concerts are held in the auditorium and everyone is welcome. The Concert Choir class, taught by Rita Andrescik, is never closed, so show your school spirit and let your talent glow. Each year Edison speech students are well represented in the Voice of Democracy script writing contest. They also take part in the American Legion speech contest. The Voice of Democracy contest had over twenty five entries this year. Edison is sponsored by Kaniewski • Loss Post 1852. Students were required to write a three to five minute speech on a chosen topic. This year's winners were. Natalie Olsen 3rd place. Lisa Waisanen 2nd place, and Kari McNamara 1st place. The American Legion, Fifth District Speech Conest was held in February. The speakers wrote a 8 - 10 minute speech in the Constitution of the United States. This is a very difficult contest to enter, as the speakers must give a 3 - 5 minute extemporaneous speech. This year's winner was Natalie Olsen who took 2nd place in the district tournament at Richfield. The debate team this year was led by captain Dan Watters. The question for debate this year delt with the argriculture problem in the United States. Even though the topic was not a popular one. new debators gained some valuable experience for next year. Twenty members took part in this year's team. Speech and student congress are two other activities just beginning to take place. Natalie Olsen and Daniel Fowlds have been doing a great job everyday on the announcements for the school. A Welcome to our 1987 foreign exchange student. Bruno Sergio D. Ferreira is a foreign exchange student from Belo Horizonte. Brazil. He arrived at Edison in January on the Rotary exchange program and will stay here one year. Every year Edison hosts a Rotary exchange student and in return a Northeast area student is sent abroad. This year Michelle Warne, an ’86 Edison graduate, is in Spain. In 1987 88 Jill Westphal. HI NEWS BOARD LEAD ESSENTIAL The 5 W’s and H WHO9 WHAT? WHEN? WHERE? WHY? HOW? The members of this year's news board is Editor; Mark Vandermyde. Ann Roepke. Ted Lynch and John Pomerenke. Think of the news page as the backbone of a good newspaper, and this years staff tried hard to keep up on the big news in our school. The news page is especially important because it's the first page you see when you pick up the Record. The Editorial Board is known as the opinion-oriented section of the paper. The three of us consider ourselves very lucky to have been a part of it, despite all the endless hours of work and the difficult decisions that faced us each day. The hardest decisons were always whether or not certain things were appropriate or inappropriate for a school paper, and it was never easy to tell co-workers whether or not their stories would be printed. Joan Ericksen; Editor-in-Chief, often found herself in the midst of questions from co-workers ranging from What time is it? to Is this story morally right for the paper? Carla Fjerstad; Managing Editor, constantly ran herself ragged trying to cover for Joan and Sue while also trying to do her own work. Sue O’Reilly; Copy Editor, busied herself collecting stories, checking length, and proofreading. EDITORIAL BOARD FEATURE BOARD The Feature Board is often called the heart of a good school newspaper. The feature reporters have the job of covering the human interest types of stories. Being a feature reporter requires imagination, good writing skills, and the willingness to probe for feature stories beneath the surface of everyday events. The Feature Board consists of Editor: Denae Trombley; Reporters: Lynette Bartz, Karen Ignatowicz, Sheryl Hanson, Andrea Kozlak, Tam my Smith. Debbie Torgerson, and Julie Westcott. SPORTS BOARD A lot of talent, ambition and journalistic abilities are represented in this years sports staff. Being the ’Anchor of the paper brings on a lot of responsibility and hard work, yet, the satisfaction of seeing students enjoy and appreciate the sports element is our reward. Editors Becky Jahnke and Pat DeVito have spent many hours trying to represent Edison's sports as honestly and opnly as possible. Maya Anderson, Jason Holscher, David Preese and Angel Chester contributed greatly to the superb writing done on the sports page. Their only wish is that the students rely on their responsive reporting. iH3 w II z A IR ID Top Row: Shannon Ament, Mohamed Elshershaby, Leslie Nelson, Adam Johnston, Rob Miller. Some staff members worked during a special yearbook class, and others spent many hours after school working to produce this year's book. It was a very challenging job for us all. since none of the students nor the advisor had ever worked on a yearbook before. To make matters more difficult, we decided to do our own comprehensive layouts, with camera-ready copy and photographs made to correct size. To accomplish this we made use of the Macintosh computer to do our word processing and the LazerWriter to generate the copy. This process gave us total control of the layout and design of the book, basically a crash course in graphic arts. The yearbook staff was led by editors Kari McNamara and Rob Miller. Photography editor Adam Johnston was assisted by Jill Westphal, Scott Kennedy, Steve Lee and Mohamed Elshershaby. David Bank Studios provided the services of Brett Gordon and Steve Ward. They were very attentive to our sudden calls for pictures. The typists for all of our copy were Heidi Peterson. Leslie Nelson. Missy Mach and Amy Stegora. Becky Held indexed the book and Pam Clabo was in charge of sales and finances. Jodi Rogers. Tracy Peterson, Joy Wiles. Shannon Wiles, Kristin Corbett and Scott Erickson worked out of the graphic arts classes during the day on layouts, typing and advertising. Jason Holscher and Tina Erickson designed and did the layouts of the sports section. Kim Dalros, Dana Jennrich and Joyce Gavino worked on the layouts each day after school. Gary Hanson, the advisor, was very helpful and encouraging to us all. We would like to thank the other students who contributed their time in the production of this year's WIZARD, especially Mr. Hanson, and Herman-the resident mouse in room 129. We hope that you enjoy your yearbook not only this year, but in the years to come, as a reflection of your years as a student at Edison High School. The team started out in 10th place and after a lot of hard work, ended up in 7th out of thirteen schools in the Twin Cities. After the season was over, a banquet was held and letters and bars were awarded to those who earned 80 points or more. Points were earned by attending practices, meets, and the tests. Kenneth Chen was one of the top students on the Math Team on tests, and was also 5th highest in the Twin Cities area. Dennis Hoang earned 110 points, the highest among team members. 'Country Club' on 22nd Ave. N.E. 4 31 During the past five years soccer established itself as on of our popular participant sports. Fifty five students participated on our two boys teams and gave us another successful season. Height and weight are only of secondary importance. As such, both of our teams have immensely benefited over the years from many of the talented Asian players that are attending Edison. Soccer is a physically and mentally challenging game. Some of our players are called upon to play up to eighty minutes during a game. Good physical conditioning is a must for a good player. Although our varsity lost twelve of its players through graduation, we expect to have a good season this coming year. Many of our JV players showed great promise and talent and will be ready to play varsity next year. Every year more of our native North East boys and girls participate successfully in Soccer at Edison. Soccer is the most popular team sport throughout the world.
