Edison High School Minneapolis, Minnesota 1 ... Orj The Move Wizard 1984 Volume 60 2 The 1983 Edison production of the Broadway Musical Guys And Dolls , by Frank Loesser, can be called nothing short of spectacular. The efforts of coordinators Rita Andrescik. vocal music teacher, and Tom Shaffer, instrumental music teacher are to be commended, not to mention the dedication of the entire cast during long hours of rehearsal. A great deal of credit should be given to the musical’s director. Kathryn O’Malley. This was her directing debut and her creative genius was indispensible. The cast was led by Mari Fahr. Ed Miller, Jenny Krai and Todd Jones. 3 4 Traditional Places, Exceptional Faces 5 Edison celebrated its first annual International Day in collaboration with Black History Week ‘83- It was a learning and exciting time and plans are in the making for the second annual program in February '84. Some of the different cultures that exist at Edison were featured by dances, skits and songs. The coordinator of the program was Rita Andrescik. We would like to express great thanks to everyone who helped and contributed time to the program. King Tom 10 EOISOK HOMECOM S3 Flawless, Exciting, Interesting, Fun ... ” Principal Jerry Simondet called the 1983 Homecoming Activities flawless, exciting, interesting and fun. He also remarked if 1983-84 continues in this spirit, and I am sure it will, it will surely go down as a BANNER. VINTAGE YEAR at Edison. Homecoming festivities included Hat and Tie Day on Monday. Decade Day on Tuesday, and Come As You Are Day on Wednesday, which saw everyone in their pajamas. After school it was time for some serious eating in the Spaghetti Eating Contest. Senior Jim Spano was declared winner. Thursday it was back to Ancient Greece and Toga Day and perhaps no one filled the role better than our own Mr. Simondet. During the afternoon, students displayed their finest in a variety of skits, songs, and dances. Finally, the big moment had arrived. The air was filled with excitement and when the crowns were placed we found that our 1983 Homecoming King and Queen were Tom Serie and Barb Sporlein. f? .. An Edison Tradition On The Move” As is the tradition at Edison, Friday was Blue-Gold Day and Tommies everywhere showed their spirit by donning their school colors. Paula Tetzman shone just a little more brightly and was rewarded with a cake from the Cheerleaders. Another highlight was the Pep Fest during which the Seniors showed an abundance of spirit and were presented with the Spirit Stick . The Parade followed the Pep Fest and was led by Grand Marshall Dr. Mel Bates. The game was played at Parade Stadium with Edison scoring 36 and South 7. Night found us dancing to the music of Sierra ending all too soon the week of flawless, exciting, interesting, fun.” Homecoming ’83 12 13 Traditional Welcome Come on feel the noise, girls rock your boys, and get wild, wild, wild ... and that’s just what everyone seemed to be doing. On Sept. 16. the Girl’s Old Gym was brought to life as the first school dance reached its peak. Twisting to the tunes of Total Entertainment, the Pom-Tom-sponsored dance combined rookie Freshmen with experienced seniors and all those in-between. The night provided a three hour oasis from the rigors of starting a new school year. 14 16 Faculty and Staff Principal: Jerome B. Simondet Asst. Principal: Stephen Marchuk 17 Asst. It is a privilege to be a member of an organization of present and future leaders of America. The greatest value of membership is the encouragement and incentive it gives you to become an effective speaker and hence a more successful and more influential citizen. NFL trains you to be a leader in your society and school today and a leader in your state tomorrow. • Speech and Debate National Forensic League 41 Minneapolis. Led by captains T. Anderson. T. Serie. and D. Newstrom. the team put forth tremendous effort that proved their success. Training for the season began early in the summer. The most outstanding game of the season was when Edison defeated Southwest 52-27. Aside from a muddy field and cold weather they executed their play well. This year Edison had one of the better teams over the past years. Five of the team members made All-City: A. Piiola. T. Anderson. T. Serie. S. Bryan, and B. Lawson. The teams put together an effort that proved successful. It shows you don't need quantity to have quality. Keep on tracking teams! 53 GET SPIKED! This year’s team was inexperienced when it came to volleyball. With only one returning Varsity player, the team had a lot to overcome. Although the scores did not show the time and effort the girls put in, you would have noticed if you had been at the games. They may have had a slow start, but with their hard work and a little experience they finished strong. Their record was 3-3 and came in fifth in the City Conference. Medal winners at this meet were Michelle Warne — 2nd. Jenny Cominetti — 2nd. 3rd. Sue Stockinger — 2nd-2nd-3rd. and Laura Robillard — 2nd. and a first in the conference for diving. Throughout finals S. Stockinger broke 2 school records, in the 200 free, and the 500 free. Captains L. Robillard and S. Stockinger had a great finish and felt that as a building year the team did very well! 56 57 The team finished their season 3-3. Girls going on to region play were: R. Lind and L. Smolak in singles, M. Harel-stad and M. Krawznski, and T. Haak and M. Fahr in doubles. With extreme mental concentration and physical determination. R. Tremendous work and long hours of practice showed the enthusiasm and ambition of both Varsity and Sophomore members. Due to the architectually unsound gym. all of the games were played away. Over the hills, down the slopes, the ski team this year was a very enthusiastic and ambitious group. Unusually they had their share of snow at the beginning of the season instead of at the end. Once the snow was out, there was no way one could keep these active skiers inside. Many of the members were new except for a few. We even had our Asian students skiing for the first time, and they were terrific. S. Johnston went to state this year and Edison is very proud to have students like her around. Good Going. Returning to the team this year are pitchers D. Newstrom and S. Bryan; catcher S. Rodger; infielders T. Anderson and S. Klimek; and outfielder T. Serie. All-City players included T. Serie and D. Newstrom. Coach Anderson predicted that the teams to beat this year will be Washburn. South-West, and Roosevelt. For two consecutive years the team missed playing in the Metro Dome for the Twin-city Championship by one game. 72 73 A New Spring Tradition Edison's first Girl's Softball Team was a perfect example of Tommie Spirit! In the short time they played they won the hearts of Tommies everywhere. The scores were high, and many games were won. Friendships were made and that special feeling of people pulling together to work as a team was felt by everyone. We were all sorry to see our Jr. Varsity coach retire. Mr. Joe Jock-etty. He went out a winner! Varsity coach Jackie Hanson is now coaching volleyball and that energy that flows through her flows right into her team. At the end of the season everyone was sorry that it went so fast. 74 75 A Spring Tradition 76 V Row 1: K. Rolf. A. Anderson. H. Petersen. J. Johansen. R. Roff. M. Simning. Row 2: M. Warne. S. Knops. It is the heart that makes a man rich. He is rich according to what he is, not according to what he has. Your experience at Edison High School has added many dimensions to what you are. You have had the opportunity to learn under the guidance of the finest teachers. You have been exposed to the greatest cultural and racial diversity available to a high school student. You have experienced the great fruits of freedom, self-control and self-discipline. What an exciting challenge you have! As a graduate, you enter the adult world, a world full of paradoxes. Science and technology fill the headlines while diplomats work feverishly to avoid small and large holocausts. I sincerely wish you all the best in your careers. Service, and Achievement are qualities difficult to measure over 4 years of education at Edison. Those Seniors which follow are those who at the conclusion of Trimester I held a 3.7 honor point ratio. Edison’s academic achievers. The Wizard staff wishes to say that the first Trimester grade point ratio had to be used in determining the 3.7 honor point ratio because of deadlines which made using the ratio at the end of Trimester II would be impossible. Todd Jones As a senior ready to wade out into the ocean of life. I feel very prepared and yet very scared. In August. I leave for Japan where I will spend one year as a Rotary Exchange student attending a Japanese High School. After I return I plan to ride the tide, struggling with the waves until my ship comes in. Edison has taught me many things. I've laughed and cried, lived and died here. But one lesson will always stand out as the anchor I can lean on: Be involved. If I could leave one thing to my sisters and friends and faculty it would be motivation and drive. I’ve also learned control and responsibility, but you can't begin to swim until you dive in the water. Pat Riley Whether I achieve my goal in a career, through religion, from a family, or by being a care-free bum. Edison has brought me four years closer to that goal. Out of the good times, bad times, and in between times, all were timely experiences. I'm grateful to the teachers and friends that made them that way. My philosophy is to enter each situation expecting the worst — then things will always turn out better and one's memories will be happy. For once can change his attitude in the future, but not his memories of the past. Thought for the future: Things are more like they are today than they have ever been before. 146 Tradition on the move as our Seniors bid farewell Joe Ferraro My most memorable events stem from the many hours spent at swimming, the lifetime friendships that grew at Edison. and the excellent teaching staff whose character has molded my future. I've always believed that a responsible person is a successful one. Next year I will attend the University of Minnesota Institute of Technology. Tony Deneka Tony was unable to submit his paragraph due to the fact that he spent the week of February 26th through March 2 in Washington D.C. on the Close-Up program. Trina Bumgarner Edison has had a great influence on me. I will remember my senior year in particular. Most things are as fun as one decides them to be. My favorite memories come from the Gymnastics Team and some very special friends. I will attend college next fall, and I hope to do a lot of travelling in the future. Barb Sporlein After leaving Edison. I plan on attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison for one year and then returning to Minnesota for the remaining three years. I'd like to someday be a civil engineer working in the area of City planning and architecture. One of the best things I've done at Edison is participate in sports whether as a spectator or an athlete. My philosophy is to take the initiative because you'll never get anywhere relying on others. 147 Matt VanSlooten I will be attending St. Cloud State University and will major in Accounting. What I will remember most about Edison are my years on the Swim Team, and the hard work that this involved. My philosophy is that one should always be honest and face up to his actions. Sabrina Johnston Next year I'll be out East attending college where I’m considering studying languages and possibly foreign affairs. I also plan to continue competing in skiing. I’ll be taking with me many super memories of my time at Edison and all the wonderful people I shared it with. Laura Robillard My most memorable times at Edison were our swimming team winning the City Title, meeting new people and making friends. Next year I plan on attending college to study law and hopefully compete in gymnastics. 148 Exchanging Old Traditions for New ... Roberta Lind I'll most likely be attending the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire with a Business degree in mind. However, with my interest in writing. I may eventually transfer to the School of Journalism right here at the U of M. My most memorable moments at Edison were winning the Region 5AA tennis title and going to State. Jeff Weirens This fall I will attend the U of M and major in business. My most memorable times at Edison have been the dances, the tennis team, the musicals, and the summer marching band. My philosophy is that the key to life is sincerity. Richard Newstrom I am undecided as to which college I will be attending next fall, but I plan on going into the medical field. My most memorable moments at Edison come from being involved with the athletic program. My philosophy in life is to set high goals for yourself and to never give up in trying to achieve them. Linda Hatfield What I will remember most about Edison are the wonderful summers I have spent with the Marching Band and the great times I have had in Spanish Class. I believe that honesty and hard work are the only ways to attain goals. Next year I will attend the U of M and possibly major in English. 149 Carrie Kinde I am planning to attend either Marion College in Indiana or Houghton College in Western New York. My goal is to be a nurse specializing in Public Health. I would like to return to West Africa to work. I also hope to pursue music and languages. Tom Serie I enjoyed participating in sports, especially football. The most single memorable event was the St. Thomas football game. I will always treasure the friends I’ve made at Edison. Although there wasn't quantity of friends, there sure was quality. I plan on going to the University of Minnesota and playing football. Kelly Jerde I’ve really loved my years here at Edison, and part of them will always linger with me. It is a little frightening to leave Edison behind, and I will miss the many teachers and friends I've had here, but I'm also very excited and anxious to get on with my life. I will be going to the University of Minnesota beginning the first summer session. I plan to continue writing and will be majoring in the Physical Sciences such as physiology and anatomy working towards a career in Health Fitness, training, and Physical Rehabilitation. My philosophy on life is to be honest about yourself, accept people as they are and enjoy life to the very fullest. 150 We Bid Old Traditions farewell and look to build new ones Bob Lawson I will be attending St. John's University to begin an education in the field of medicine. My most memorable moments at Edison are playing football and driving down the school sidewalks in Matt's convertible bug in the middle of winter with the top down. Worries in life are only droplets in the oceans. Brad Bruesehoff I plan to attend a two year community college in the Twin Cities area. After two years I plan to transfer to a four year University. I am not sure what my major will be yet. I'd like to do something that allows me to travel and make a lot of money. You get out of life what you put into it and you only go around once. So you've got to make the best of it and have as much fun as possible while working toward your goals. Cindy Klaesges Laughter will always be a big part of my memories of Edison. I'll always remember getting crazy at pep fests and sports games, but I’ll probably never remember the tests I bombed out on. After this life. I'm going to go on to four years of college, two in Duluth and two in the Twin Cities. A few words of wisdom to those I leave behind: Be yourself, because you and yourself are an unbeatable pair! 151 Teachers Classes Hangouts Ways to Relax Styles Nicknames Edison Memories T.V.
