Therefore, the Edison Wizard Staff would like to dedicate this yearbook to you. The theme of the book. It's you, simply means you — both the student body and the entire staff. These are all parts of the everyday scenes that make up Edison High School. These pages show students inside Edison as they go through a typical school day. Throughout this book, the Wizard focuses on an inside look at YOU. s After Hours What do you do after hours? (Meaning school hours). The sound of the bell doesn't signal the end of school life. Here is just a few of the many school activities that take place after school. The social and also competitive activities which fill the calendar for our school year. 6 7 The Way It Was 50 Years Ago . . . THE WIZARD 192 8 iMSn.vr, Omni llcrmi Schultz, Helen Da . Murid Miner. The new gym has opened the door for better sports facilities and for both school and community activities. The library is presently expanding and will include audio-visual facilities, study booths, and a conference room. The lunchroom was redesigned to facilitate the new lunchroom, which includes pre-packed food and also a salad bar. Due to the construction on our new field, the football team had to play their games away. Having the Homecoming assembly at night, enabled more of the community and alumni to attend. A tradition-breaking change was the two main assemblies, Homecoming and Sno Daze. A King and Queen were crowned at each assembly. As we look around and notice the different sights, styles, ideas, and atmosphere, we have to admit 1978 was a year of change! The show, directed by Jack Litowsky, included acts by Edison students, alumni, and community. The program ended with the crowning of homecoming queen Cheryl Anderson, and homecoming king Dan Kuch. 22 Homecoming 1977 Homecoming week started with a balloon toss on Monday. Tuesday afternoon, students beat the teachers in a faculty-student basketball game. Other activities included a tricycle race, pie-eating contest, circus day, and blue-gold day. This year the homecoming marathon was run on Thursday instead of the usual Tuesday morning. Bob Berg was first in the boys 18.6 mile race with a time of 1.54:39. Second and third place honors went to Glenn Chiodo (10), and Joe Pasma (12), respectively. Rita Paquette (12) won the girls 10 mile marathon with a winning time of 1.34:49. In second place was Lee Ann Craig (12). Laura Comminetti (11), and Mary Hanzlik (10), were tied for third. 23 There's No Place Like Homecoming Friday, October 14, ended homecoming week. Instead of the pre-game assembly and parade, the cheerleaders held a pep assembly during 2nd hour to psych the students for the football game against South. Because of continued construction on the new gym, the game was held at South. The TOMMIES Held the Tigers by the Tail -final score 40-13. 24 25 Queen Cheryl Homecoming Coronation had an added attraction this year—a Homecoming King. The first fifteen finalists for King were Steve Bartlett, Rick Bickford, Scott Burk-land, Paul Firle, Rick Glubke, Pat Hart, Nick Howard, Bob Hyska, Greg lacarella, Dan Kuch, Gary Maciej, Tom Miskowic, Paul Pugs-ley, Dan Roff, and Pat Rossi. This was the gal's big chance to ask the guy of her choice. The couples started arriving at 8:00 and the big chase began moments afterward. When starters gave the mark, get set, go, gals were to catch their guys before 9:00 or they'd be put behind bars by the Sadie sheriffs. They were released by a dime and a smooch. Others could be found in the smooching booth or in front of the altar of Marryin' Sam or Samantha. The couples swung their partners to the sound of joey, in Ye Olde Lunchroom. Stick horses were awarded to Cheryl Invie and Scott Burkland for the most original costumes. Lit'l Abners and Daisy Maes were chosen. Abners were Chuck Anderson, senior; Keith Ledin, junior; and Jim Evangelist, sophomore. Daisy Maes were Lisa Nordquist, senior; Sandy Jacobson, junior; and Stephanie Meade, sophomore. Ron Mochinski was the lucky winner of the white crowned rooster. 37 Speech The speech team spends many hours in writing and preparing speeches to be used in competition. The competitions are usually held on Saturday and run all day. Categories range from extemporaneous speaking to creative expression. Team success is growing. This year they received a national award from the National Forensic League for speech and debate excellence for the years 1955-1977. Debate The Debate Team is made up of sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are interested in improving their communicating and discussing techniques. The two member teams are whether pro or con on an issue. They research, investigate, and document their views. Then they are pitted against an opposing team. The result is trophies, medals, and citations. Most importantly, they are able to see and comprehend both sides of a controversial issue. Top, Tom Warner reading the planks of his speech. Pocket School is run every day from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Students are tutored on Math, English, Reading, and Social Studies. The program includes field trips to vocational schools, and places of cultural interest. Also shadowing (watching) workers on the job for a day. Aides in the program are Delores Allen, Mary Rick, and Marion Bierch. 40 Menlo Park Menlo Park offers an alternative for students from Edison. The student who feels he cannot relate to Edison can attend Menlo. Patricia Lobash is the coordinator at Menlo. Other faculty members are-Roger Harmon, Marilyn Ellingboe, and Boyce Mohn. Students participating in this program have the regular classes-English, social studies, and gym. The atmosphere is very relaxed, and the classroom is small. This gives the teacher time to deal with the student on an individual basis. I Senior Class Cabinet The Senior Cabinet activities included sponsoring the Senior Class Banquet and the Senior Class Prom. They also made arrangements concerning graduation. Row one-Leanne Wagner-Secretary, Tonia Hattouni-Vice President, Mike Roethke-Treasurer, Anne Bordwell-President; Row two-Dan Perzell, Becky Kenny, Theresa Colvin, Dan Roff. Cabinet The Year Of The Popcorn Machine The new gym created a great deal of activity for the Pep Club members. The concession stand opened November 29, and is now open for all home sports activities. The club purchased a new popcorn and hot dog machine for the stand. In order to pay for these new machines, the club had many fund raising activities including selling buttons, candy, and memo boards. The council has worked mainly with extra-curricular functions, but this year they have strived to improve the school curriculum and atmosphere, as well as sponsoring social activities. Committees were set up to deal directly with communications throughout the school, lunchroom improvements and recommendations for curriculum. A contest was sponsored by the council to allocate the Have it your way money, won from Burger King, to clubs they felt could benefit the school. It was a long wait for all of us wanting to see the building finished and ready for our use. The dedication ceremony for the new gym was on December 11, 1977. After a short program, including some speakers and performers, the public was able to roam the building looking at the many rooms. The new gym has folding bleachers with room for 1,500 spectators, six lockers rooms located in two areas, two tunnels connecting the gym with Edison, a lobby multipurpose area, a concession stand, and public facilities. During the program, the public was told that, at the first home football game our new field would be named after Pete Guzy, a former athletic coach at Edison. 47 Choir And Guitar This year's choir started the year off by singing at Apache Plaza, Fort Snelling and the Winter holiday concert. Basically, the choir spent the other half of the year rehearsing for and putting on the musical Swingin' High and their annual spring concert. The guitar class meets every day during first hour with other students in an independent study. Members will be participating in the State competition April 19. The class will conclude with a guitar recital to be held on June 1. Things may look unorganized but we always got it all together. Hard work and a great staff put out a really great book. The Wizard holds memories for all, but it will always have special memories for the staff. We wrote the copy, took the pictures, missed the classes, drew the layouts, stayed late. Words will never say how much I want to thank the Carl Johnson family for opening their home to me as a new daughter, the adult and school AFS club their help and generosity, but just as much- you the students and staff of Edison. You have made me feel welcome with your warmth and kindness. I have so many happy and wonderful memories to take home with me- the friendships, football games, helping make popcorn for Pep club, homecoming, the trip to Chicago, adventures with the band, snow the cold weather, but above all I'll be taking home a little bit of Northeast in my heart. Hopefully, I'll have left a bit of Ireland here, too, by what I have told you. My thanks to you all again- I know I will miss you all but I will never forget you. — Gillian Cupid's Choice — Queen LeAnne And King Gary The annual Sweetheart Dance, sponsored by the Pom-Toms on Feb. 10, was a night to remember. Director Jack Litowsky felt it was the best performance of a play that he has ever directed. From the two performances given on March 2 and 3, it was apparent that the audience felt the same way. The cast received a standing ovation at both performances. 68 George ...........Nick Johnson Lennie ......Mike McQuiston Candy ........Randy Peterson The Boss .......John Forsythe Curley ...........Tony Matthes Curley's Wife ___Julie Engdahl Slim ......................Ted Karkula Carlson .........Ron Mochinski Whit ................Doug Baird Crooks ..........Tom Anderson The dog is Nicky 69 It's You 70 71 Anderson, Charles Academic Achievers Students above the 95th percentile as of Trimester 1. This program was designed to give students a wider choice of classes that are offered at the different North area schools and to promote a voluntary desegregation. Within the last year, a lot of materials such as filmstrips and literature have been presented to encourage students to become a part of this rapidly growing program. There was an increase of 50 students and almost 300 hours enrolled in the HEN program first trimester this year. At that time approxiamately 454 students were involved. I think HEN is a terrific opportunity to meet new people, learn new things and it gives you a chance to broaden your awareness of the North Area ' says Faith Kelley, HEN participant. 79 ■'■‘W SPORTS Girls Track Record; 7 wins, 4 losses Edison 86 Henry 64 Edison 86 North 63 Twin City Indoor 3rd Roosevelt Invite 2nd City Relays 3rd Edison Invite 1st Southwest Relays 3rd City Meet 4th Region Meet 9th Although hindered by the lack of a track, the girls' track team emerged as a contender in the Mpls. conferenece.
