It was a busy summer with car washes, raffles, bake sales, costumes to make, and routines to learn. Four girls attended the clinic at Augsburg College and on occasion, the squad accompanied the band at the summer parades. Getting up to attend the 7 oโ€™clock practices during the summer seemed unreal at first, but by August the excitement of performing at the Eastside coronation and football preview made it all easier. After hosting the Welcome Dance, the girls prepared for a very busy fall season, needless to say, performing at the twin-city game was a highlight. The winter was enhanced by the First Annual Christmas competition and fashion show at St Cloud where the squad won a trophy for best performing costume.โ€ After a successful Christmas sale and hosting the Sweetheart Dance, the squad devoted its attention to the Aquatennial competition held in April. The โ€74โ€ squad stands out as one of the most conditioned and evenly-matched squads ever. Itโ€™s been a great year. M. Pibal FRONT ROW โ€” Vicki Motions, Mary Porter, Ginny Holmquiu, Pam Ameson. Gary Hakala Hellen Berg Dick Matey SEATED SEATED Bill Bevans โ€” Teacher, Coach, And Friend Bill Bevans had the capacity to bring out the best in individuals. I recall a boy who graduated from Edison a number of years ago. Most teachers had given up on him. Bill decided that he was going to help this boy get through school. Bill also kept an eye on the boyโ€™s progress in other classes. The results were rewarding. After starring on the football team for two years, the boy-graduated. However. Billโ€™s interest didnโ€™t stop there. He contacted a friend of his in the business world to find the boy a job. Billโ€™s interest was deep and sincere. What Bill did for that individual could be magnified many times by the number of students he had over a nine year period. He had a concern for all students at Edison. As he was a coach, evidence of this concern is most visible in his relationship with Edisonโ€™s athletes. He liked them and they liked him. His โ€Bโ€™โ€™ squad football team had not lost a game in six years. Perhaps the single greatest reason for this record was that Bill was an outstanding football coach. He believed in Edisonโ€™s teams and their ability. He was able to transfer this belief to his teams, and the result was success. His interest in athletics found Bill attending many athletic events, often accompanied by some of his family He believed that Edison teams would win He was disappointed when they lost, but l e was never down on them. Bill felt that if someone gave his best effort and didn't win, it would simply be a matter of time before he won. His attitude was contagious. It seems now to be the attitude of students at Edison. A good number of students believe in themselves, 1 think in great measure, because they have known Bill Bevans. Bill and 1 often talked about kids from Edison From our talks, I know he loved them, not in the mushy sense of the word, but in the deep and sometimes painful sense that wants people to accomplish the best for themselves. He loved it at Edison, and I believe that Bill was loved by Edison. Let Bill Bevans legacy to us be that we live our lives striving to make better lives for others. The cover, designed by Kay Olson and Jonny Lourcy feature raised print and wears a unique natural color. This year's theme remember whenโ€ is portrayed in the cover design. Between the covers the attempt was to capture the many moods of Edison. The 74 Wizard contains about 2200 photos which is half of the total taken and represents over 5000 man hours of planning, assembling and proofreading โ€” we enjoyed it โ€” hope you do too. Thanks to Tercsc Kitt and Ed Rajtar for spearheading a great staff. Mr. Brownโ€™s Art classes, students who contributed photos and ideas, Liebig's studio for going beyond the call of duty to get the best photos possible, Steve Wright of Taylor Publishing for all of his help and understanding, and most of all, thank you for the great support. Jill Adoiptuon and Mary Jo Nyt|uiu Room 329 is quiet now. the work is finished and the room is tidy again Itโ€™s pleasant to look back and reflect on old โ€74. It seems that it's been an especially full year with more changes than usual and in many ways, one of the best yean that can be remembered. Some of our memories contain sorrow, as the death of a great man and teacher, but even that contributed to the spirit of humanization which seemed to be felt by students and staff throughout the year. Human relations will probably be remembered as a key feature of 74. Teachers continued to plan and attend meetings, the school system was decentralized, community resources were invited into the building and the entire staff boarded buses to get a closer look at the community. The curriculum went through major changes, communication channels between students and teachers seemed to open up and student participation in school activities increased. AH in all, 74 was a year in which many people worked toward making a great institution better and one that a great community will continue to be proud of. -Staff Sophomores Abraham, Denise โ€” 99
