THE 1965 Wizard Published by the Senior Class of Edison High School Minneapolis, Minnesota I Contents Faculty Seniors Organizations Sports School Life The wide world is all before us. BURNS 2 3 Dedication With great pride we dedicate the 1965 Wizard to Mr. Wallace Spo-lar. Mr. Spolar is indeed worthy of this honor as he has shown in his ability and interest in the field of education. Mr. Spolar earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Macalester College and his Master of Arts degree at the University of Illinois. He taught at Lincoln Jr. High before he came to Edison. Mr. Spolar is presently serving in the capacity of Executive Secretary for the Minneapolis Credit Union which is affiliated with the Minneapolis Teachers Association. He has shown his special interest in Edison students by organizing Class trips. He also supervised Vaudeville and has l een advisor to the Student Council. Mr. Spolar represents an ideal to many students of Edison and we know everyone will applaud our choice. 4 Faculty Dreams, boohs, are each a world; and books, we know. Are a substantial world, both pure and good. WILLIAM WORDSWORTH 6 Edison students are on the threshold of a dynamic and exciting world. Some of you plan to further your formal education in college or universities while others will enter the competitive business world. We hope and believe that Edison High School through its staff has provided you with the background and training which will allow you to compete successfully in either arena. Those of you who continue to learn in life and on the job will discover that the wide world truly is all l efore you. Harry N. Vakos Principal The knowledge gained through your years at Edison High School is a priceless achievement and one which was not always easily attained. There is little satisfaction gained from goals within easy reach. Those which are won only after much effort are the ones of which we are most proud and which are most valuable to us. In striving to find your life's work you may experience failure or disappointment along the way. This may be a valuable experience in itself by teaching you how to overcome adversity and become a little stronger because of it. One of the ingredients for success in life is determination to develop our capacities to the fullest. When obstacles confront you, do not give up—find a way of working through the problem. Remember, goals won after much effort are the ones most highly prized. Good luck to all of you. Harold J. Younghans Assistant Principal Social Studies Glenn Hay, Thomas Geankopolis, Charles Singh, David Moore Our present studies of the past help us to a better understanding of the future. Earl I arsen. To instruct us in this field, we had Mr. Bates and Mr. Parsons. Those students interested in why an apple falls to the ground and what chemically makes up our world were able to enjoy Chemistry or Physics. Guilford Parsons, Melvin Bates Selmer Drage, William Marcouiller, Neil Gillis 14 Music Combining tones and rhythms with a definite form and meaning, make music pleasing to the ear. This was possible through our Choir teacher. Miss Ferguson, and our Band director, Mr. Lunkley. Mary Ferguson, Elmo Lunkley Irwin Brown, Charles Swanstrom Art The Art Department enables those individuals interested in art, to further their education in this field. 15 Home Economics There is more to Home Economics than being able to cook. In addition to cooking, the housewife must be able to sew and take care of the general home in many ways. To be able to do this with good economy and thrift is an art. Ethel Knutson, Lois Miller, Genevieve Horton Library By reading books, a complete world is open to our enjoyment. This is only possible in a school with a fine staff of librarians such as ours. 16 Librarians: Dorothea Donohue, Helen Stub. Clerk assistants: Marcella Bury, LaVonne Pritchard Industrial Arts David Hall, Donald Babst, Harold Jedlund The excellent facilities and education available to the young men of our school, help to prepare their future through our Industrial Arts Department. 17 Wayne Nelson, Frederick Sulzbach, Louis Lopata Business The growing importance of Business in the world of today is well known. The Record serves as a means of communication between the faculty and students. Edison is one of two schools in Minneapolis to print its own paper. In editorial form, the Record presents opinions from students and the faculty to lie read and considered. The editor-in-chief this year has been Joan Nierengarten. Joan has the task of supervising the staff, editing page one, and meeting deadlines with a finished product. The Record’s faithful advisor this year and for the past nine years has been Miss Brunzell. With her guidance and knowledge, the Record Staff is chosen from her newswriting classes and then produces the paper. Miss Brunzell was editor of her own high school newspaper and studied journalism at the U. of M. Altogether the Record Staff has been successful in producing an informative and appreciated Edison Record. RECORD STAFF—ROW 1: L. Woll, L. Englund. C. Wallers. P. Jakubik. Mbs Brunzrll, J. This year, the group’s performances were of the highest quality. During Christmas the Choral Club was invited to Apache Plaza to perform, and soon after, in February, they sang a delightful concert to the Northeast Junior High student body. Besides choral work. Miss Ferguson teaches Organ Class. In Organ Class, members have the opportunity to learn the techniques of organ playing and to develop their ability. CHORAL CLUB—C. Ives, M. Perllcr, J. Bien, J. The seniors enjoyed a delicious meal and then were entertained by some of their classmates. To close the program our new principal, Mr. Vakos, gave an inspiring speech which made those present realize that the big moment, graduation, was fast approaching. Those who heard Mr. Vakos will not soon forget his words. 176 'Musings' “People' Andy All of the seniors will surely agree that one of the most fascinating members of our class was Andy Lindqvist, our foreign exchange student from Sweden. In his short stay at Edison Andy has proved to be one of the nicest persons one could hope to know. He has extended the hand of friendship to everyone ami we’ve all enjoyed knowing him. Andy’s school days here at Edison have been busy ones. Because of his interest in music, Andy became a member of the school band. During the winter he participated in swimming. He was one of the finest members of the team and those who attended the District meet will never forget his fine performance. Throughout the year Andy also served as photographer for the school newsj aper. Andy will be remembered for his contributions to our school but even more for his warm and friendly personality. We wish to thank Andy for being such a fine member of the senior class and we would like to extend to him our sincerest wishes for happiness and success in the future. A new mode in sweaters was also seen as the sleeveless “shell” was worn. All in all. the girls had a wonderful year of new. sharp, and exciting fashions. Edison boys appeared es| ecially well-dressed this year in their V-neck sweaters, both long-sleeved and sleeveless. Loafers and wing-tips were the popular styles for boys’ shoes.
