.3 The 1960 WIZARD Published by the Senior Class of Edison High School Minneapolis,! Minnesota • t SJi H.S • • I Contents faculty...............................6 seniors..............................IS organizations........................66 sports..............................110 school life.........................114 3 Elmo Lunkley Dedication Mr. Lunkley is one of those rare people who are capable of commanding respect and inspiring friendship at first contact. Since 1939, when he came to Edison, he has succeeded in developing our bands into outstanding organizations which have received high ratings in district and state music contests. In addition to his school activities, Mr. Lunkley has numerous interests. An excellent trumpeter, he has played with the Minneapolis Symphony, several dance bands, the Ice Follies band, and many others. Recently he was appointed director of the Park Board band. Among his many interests, he enjoys fishing, golfing, and traveling. To a successful teacher, who has helped others to learn and to appreciate; to an accomplished musician, who has provided excellent example; to a warm friend, who has given wise counsel—this 1960 WIZARD is respectfully dedicated. Faculty Our school year of '59-'60 was again under the supervision of our principal, Mr. Paul A. Samuelson. He has served our school for eleven very efficient years. He is a very fine speaker and has brought honor and prestige to Edison. Discipline and discrepancy head the list of duties for our assistant principal, James R. Zimdars. He has served as assistant principal for the past four years. Even though he has some unpleasant tasks, he handles his job in a cheerful, capable, and efficient manner. JAMES R. ZIMDARS. Assistant Principal In our English department we are taught to speak and write intelligently. Grace Garland, Sophie Aibinson, Myrle Brunzell, Sarah Black. These courses: speech, debate, dramatics, and journalism, contribute to well-rounded educations. Verna T. Olsen, Agnes Deveroll, Florence Leary, Peter Mankowski. In our English classes literature is stressed as well as grammar. Anna Schwartz, Julie Altshuler, Quentin Blake, Vera Hulberf, Dorothy Wallace. 10 Courses in international, national, and local affairs help give us a better understanding of the problems which confront us today. In these subjects the basic concepts of American and world history are learned. John Bastolich, Thomas Gean-koplis, Kenneth Bronoman, John Roach. History, one of our largest departments, includes courses in American and world histories and modern problems. Each student is required to take these courses. Marie Smith, Wallace Spolar, Arvid Simmons. The Science Department offers general science, and courses that are specialized. Guilord Parsons, J. Selmer Drage, William Marcouiller, Melvin Bates. Courses in office skills and business methods are excellent training for future employment. Mary Cornelius Alphonse Johnson, Zclda Holland. Emma Choudek. The Foreign Language Department helps familiarize us with the languages and customs of these countries: France, Spain, and Germany. Anne Keflner, Sophie Pappas, Edna Sorenson. 12 The band, one of the best in the city, is under the supervision of Mr. Lunktey. There are also different singing groups where students learn how to make good use of their voices. Raymond Champlin, Mary Barbara Ferguson, Elmo lunkley. The courses in math offered here help prepare us for college and for life. Benjamin licmohn, Celia Torney, James Kottom, Christopher Hamrin, Everett Zellers. In home economics girls are taught how to take care of their families in the future. Lois Miller, Genevieve Horton, Joan Birkcmeyer. Concerned with the present while looking ahead to the future might well summarize the work of Edison's four counselors. Testing students, counseling them concerning programs, and assisting seniors in their immediate plans after graduation are a few of their duties. Lawrence Moon, Carol Robin, Kathryn Scheaffcr, Reynold Willie. Two women kept very busy are the librarians. They keep the library neat as possible, and always help students who are looking for books on research topics. They make sure our library always has the best books. Evelyn lundblad, Helen Stub. Our nurse is Mrs. Marcell. She is always prepared for any emergency that might come to us. Betty Marcell. In our gym classes we learn how to cooperate with other people as well as learning the meaning of good sportsmanship. These are the reasons why Edison has won so many championships. Robert Borg, Peter Guzy. The activities of the physical education department are close in relation to human growth, development, and behavior. Elsie Conover, Edith Barton. Coordinators help establish students in the business world. They are also in charge of the part time work programs. Marcella Hammer, Hallie Brickner, Charles Kemp. The shop teachers strive to develop skills in all phases of industrial education. Donald Babst, Louis lopata, Raymond Burkholfer. The shop courses offered are: mechanical drawing, woodwork, printing, electricity, and metals. 8ruce Malhiason, Harold Jedlund. It performs many functions for the welfare of all students. The members are elected by their fellow students because of their abilities to lead and govern our school. This year's Student Council sponsored many social events, such as Homecoming, Sadie Hawkins, Sno-Daze, and Vaudeville. This year the Student Council convention was held at Vocational High School in Minneapolis. Edison housed approximately 60 representatives to the convention from out of town. The advisor of the Student Council, Mr. Breneman, has done an outstanding job through his willingness to help and ability to lead our Student Council's activities throughout the year. We are proud of our student government, for it makes Edison our school. Mr. BRENEMAN, Advisor Student Council 68 Tom B«nson Treasurer Danila Johnson Secretary ASSEMBLY—ROW I: H. Scrum, K. Gustafson. The Department is under the direction of Miss Mary Barbara Ferguson, and includes Mr. O. Raymond Champlin. Under the direction of these two able leaders, the choral groups have brought us many fine programs. At Christmas time, the Choral Club presented an assembly for us, and the Tenth Grade Choir and Tommie Tones presented a program at night. In the second semester the Choral Club presented Elijah by Mendelssohn as a part of the Spring Concert. The choirs also took part in the annual State Music Contest. On November 1, 1959, our new organ was dedicated at a special concert given by Mr. C. Wesley Anderson. This concert culminated five years of collections in order to buy the instrument. Since then, the organ has added much pleasure to our assemblies. Giving and Receiving CHORAL CLUB—ROW I: D. Sibet, E. Richard, Sac. loader, B. Anderson, J. Rosell, K. Pahl, J. Pedersen, K. Lind, Sac. The band has always been an organization to be proud of. The members have strived to do their best to develop good music. In early September the band begins its practice sessions. To add to our enjoyment the band plays at football games and at basketball games. The remaining days of the year the band rehearses for the Winter Concert, the Spring Concert, exchange performances with other schools, and commencement ceremonies. The band has been divided into two periods which gives each student time for individual help and general improvement of the band. The music which Mr. Lunkley picks out usually offers a real challenge for the members. As the band plays on through the years, we will remember their accomplishments. CURTIS SUERTH, Major Rounding the curve, the band enter the field. 77 Mr. Lunkley has been band director at Edison for 22 years. His genuine and sincere concern for each student makes him a favorite with them. He has an ability to draw ev -y ounce of talent from each member of the band to its advantage. Under Mr. Lunkley's able direction, the band has become accomplished in classical and semi-popular music as well as rousing marches. This is evidenced in their concerts and ratings in the state contest. Mr. Lunkley is admired and respected by the entire student body and faculty for his outstanding work. Thus, our band continues to grow and improve with the help of Mr. Lunkley and each individual band member. MR. ELMO LUNKLEY, Director Working Toward Perfection ROW I: L. Nokola, B. Redfield, T. Honor Society The Edison Senior National Honor Society is composed of students who are in the upper 25 percent of their class, or have attained a B average scholastically. Membership is also determined by leadership, service, and character. The aim of the Society is to create an enthusiasm for good scholarship, to develop worthy school and community citizenship, to stimulate devoted service to school, community and country, to encourage the development of trustworthy leadership, and to instill exemplary qualities of character. The candidates chosen for the Society are rated by the faculty, and then voted on by the present membership. Any member can be dropped from the Society if he fails to meet the standards set by it. Activities by this society include an assembly for initiating new members, and a tea for retiring teachers. Although other honors bestowed by the school recognize special ability, skill, and talent, the Honor Society recognizes education as the fundamental objective. Throughout history man has recognized the value of such distinction and in one way or another has marked for special honor those who excel. Ancient and medieval universities established their honor societies. In modern times the coveted honor of election to Phi Beta Kappa outranks all other distinctions. In a student's election to this society, the whole school honors him. SENIOR NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY-ROW I: J. Hughart. K. Oleson, K. Pahl, C. Nordin, A. Borowicz. N. Quamme, L ly !ig, AA. It now has 85,000 members and 650 chapters in every section of the country. It has a carefully planned system of awards — credit points, membership, advanced degrees, honor roll, certificates and keys. All students receive some recognition for their work. The Edison Forensic League is an organization whose purpose is to encourage participation in speech activities such as, debate, extemporaneous talks, oratory, discussion, and declamation. The members work for degrees in the National Forensic League. They also compete in the Minnesota State League. The Debate Squad begins the year with a large group of debaters who participate for several months. During the last weeks of the season the group is cut down to twelve debaters who do intensive work for the final tournaments. They are the official Edison Debate Squad. Students at Edison are able to become better acquainted with foreign countries through our foreign language clubs and through the A. F. S. program. We have three language clubs at Edison, the French Club, the German Club, and the Spanish Club. These clubs share a common purpose: to give students an opportunity to practice a foreign language in a social setting and to help them to learn more about the people and the customs of the different countries. The clubs have varied activities. This year the French Club published a newspaper and made scrapbooks to send to French school children. The Spanish Club, which is open to second year Spanish students, sponsored a Christmas party for all Spanish students. The German Club put on an assembly and made a scrapbook showing different parts of the United States to be sent to Germany. Freya Pfeiffer of Neunkirchen, Saarland, is the sixth American Field Service exchange student to attend Edison. From her we learned some of the customs of the German people, and we hope that she will take some of our customs back home with her. Our Language Clubs FRENCH CLUB—ROW I: J. Walker, G. They see that students pass through the halls in an orderly manner and regulate traffic on the stairs. They also have the important responsibility of seeing that all rooms are empty during air raid and fire drills. These boys must be recommended and selected by the faculty with the approval of the present members of the Hall Guards and Stair Guards. They must have a C average to be considered for the position. Mr. Roach, the advisor, keeps the guards constantly on the alert for any violators of the school rules. This organization is run similar to a police department. It has hall captains and stair captains. All in all, they are very important to our school. Swiice to Others-Responsibility for HAIL GUARDS-ROW l: C. Worthington. D. Holm, F. Vetcio. S. Koru . B. Miss Brunzell, advisor of the Record, and her staff work hard to publish this bi-weekly paper. Edison is one of two schools in the city which prints its own paper. The staff itself is chosen from among the juniors of the school who have taken journalism in the eleventh grade. Having taken journalism is a great aid in being able to understand how stories and editorials are to be written. The members must be able to have a nose for news. This is how material for the paper is obtained. Miss Brunzell has been the Record's advisor for four years. During that time she has helped publish approximately 65 papers. It is through her guidance and knowledge of journalism that our paper is one of the best in the city of Minneapolis. She devotes at least one hour each day all year long to helping her staff publish the Edison Record for the entire student body. Harriet Serum, the editor of the Record, was chosen by Miss Brunzell for her capability to handle the job. She must know more than the average person about journalism because it is her job to make all the headlines for the paper and assign the members of the staff to their various jobs. Guzy. Our season got off to a bad start by losing our first three games, but the boys came through and we finished strong by winning the next 3 out of 4 games,' was the description coach Pete Guzy gave of the 1959 football season. As stated, Edison hopes for a title team were blasted early in the season, but the hardworking Tommies bounced back from their early losses to a season total of 3-4. Senior lettermen this year were: Jerry Barfuss, Charlie Bubar, Ed Drabezyk, Dave Egeland, Ron Fish, Art Fretag, Jim Glodek, Bob Havrish, Cliff Hickerson, Roger Johnson, Ed Kaminski, Tom Knutson, Dick Kollar, Ron Lyke, Tom Maxwell, Bohdan Prehar, Bob Risch, Ken Schullo, Paul Stepenchak, Jim Vadis, Tom Wiggen, Dave Yates, and Bill Zawislak. Cross Country It was the best cross country team that I have ever coached, said Mr. Bates in describing the 1959 season. Their six wins can be accredited in part to the enthusiasm of the team. Dick Clark was an outstanding competitor who remained undefeated throughout the regular season. With Captain Dennis McLeod and Carl Christoph-erson graduating, we hope that Tom Solby and Leland Grotte will provide a strong foundation for next year's team. Close Finish SKIING TEAM—Co«h Mr. Champlin, B. lindman. R. Foster, A. Fretag. C. Winters. B. Fretag, D. Clark. Skiing This season the ski team was fairly successful, stated Mr. Champlain. They went into the city meet defeated by only two teams, Washburn and North. Captained by Dick Clark, the ski team placed fourth in the city meet and seventh in the state meet. With the backbone of the team made up largely of sophomores and juniors, we will be well represented next year. Outstanding competitors in cross country skiing were Captain Dick Clark, Bob Fretag, and Dick Foster. Others were Gary Stelling in jumping, and Craig Winters in slalom. Basketball Mr. Lopata, our basketball coach, mentioned the fact that, Our injuries handicapped us enough so it meant the loss of close games which might have been won. The team seemed to have trouble in getting going in the city league and played its best ball in non-conference games. There were no real stand outs on this year's team, instead it was a well-balanced squad. The record at the end of the season was 2-8. Coach Lopata feels that the best games played were against St. Paul Harding, Wilson, Johnson and Minneapolis South. 120 Bending ears during 3rd quarter. I Vadi drawing a foul. Swimming The team lacked upper classmen that are needed to give a team depth, said the swimming coach, Mr. Mar-couiller. The swimming team this season was fairly successful with good individual participation. The free style relay team, consisting of Bob Redfield, Chester Merino, Jim Lundell, and Jerry Jones, qualified in the district meet along with Jim Lundell and Duane Paulson who qualified in individual events. The squad was made up entirely of sophomores and juniors which makes for a bright spot in the future. Butch is off to a fast start. HOCKEY TEAM—ROW ONE: J. Peterson, R. Anderson, A. Burt, B. Hockey Mr. Gunberg, in giving a review of the hockey season, said, The team was handicapped by inexperience due to the fact that underclassmen were Jhe balance of the team. As a whole, the team looks fairly good for next year with many returning lettermen to give us an experienced squad. The best game of the season was against Minneapolis North. The outstanding players were: Captain Roger Johnson, Brian Brant, Roxy Pes-tello and Jim Peterson. What's he saying? 126 TENNIS TEAM—ROW ONE: F. Yates. D. Nelson, J. Berg. ROW TWO: M. Dorso, M. Russinik, D. Rosell. J. Brecht, Mr. Larson, Coach. Tennis As in most other sports this year, our tennis team had an average season. The players had a good attitude and plenty of competitive spirit. Mike Dorso was the outstanding player for the team and also captain. With the pairing up of Don Rosell and Gary Holmberg as a doubles team, the whole team was bettered. Players to watch for in the future are Frank Yates, Mike Russinik, and John Berg. This year there was also a fall tournament, but Edison returned defeated. Captain Mike Dorso return the ball. T rack When asked for a comment on the track team, Mr. Parsons replied, This year we had the makings of a fine track team, but we had an over-abundance of bad luck. Despite a lack of depth in short distances and a numerous amount of injuries to team members, Edison finished with an average season. After the regular season, however, our team took second place in the Minneapolis Relay Meet. Outstanding competitors were Loren Cybyske, Dan Crocker, Ed Roethke, Ray Kauth, John Hu-manansky, Glen Bruins, and Dick Clark. 128 ______________________________________________________________________________________________________• •___________:___- - - Off the blocks at the sound of the gun. When our hitting was up, our pitching was down, said Coach Pete Guzy. In spite of a season which seemed marked by inability to couple good hitting with good pitching, the team chalked up four wins with an equal number of losses. J. Zawadski captained the team. Outstanding players were B. Keely and J. Zawidski. With D. Solz, R. Wojicak, T. Maxwell, and B. Marciniak returning, we hope to have a strong nucleus for next year. Kaminski safe on first. Baseball Captain Jerry Zawadski eyes the pitcher. Moving up on a high pitch. Pick off at first base. Solz cuts it close at first! GOLF TEAM-ROW I: J. Manthis. B. Balega. ROW II: C. Guenther, G. Brunos, T. Urbanski, G. Zgutowitx, T. Jaros. Golf This year's Edison golf team finished in second place in the city standings with an 8-1-1 record. While they defeated champion Roosevelt, a tie with North and a loss to Southwest kept them from an otherwise perfect season. The team won the Alexandria Invitational and District 17 meet, took third in the Region V meet, and was runner-up in the State Tournament. Mr. Liemohn feels that, The team should have done better, had there been no 'letdowns'. It looks like it should go in. BOARD OF COACHES—ROW ONE: A. Johnson, W. Marcooillcr, C. Hamrin, P. Samuelson, P. Guzy, R. Borg, I. Lopata. ROW TWO: G. Parsons, H. Jcdlund, J. Roach, E. Larsen, J. Kottom, D. Gunberg, B. Liemohn, M. Bates, O. Champlin. Board of Coaches Our Board of Coaches is responsible for the athletic policy of the school. It decides the action of the entire Edison athletic department. Another job is recognizing the outstanding athlete on a basis of conduct, scholarship, athletic accomplishment, and ability. Couldn’t be that bad, coach. On guard Monkey see, monkey do! Girls' Physical education is required at Edison in the ninth, tenth, and eleventh grades. It is through the physical education program that the girls are able to get physical activity, relieve tensions, and learn about personal hygiene. The girls at Edison are fortunate in having a program that offers team sports, individual activities, and calisthenics. Among the team sports are field hockey, baseball, volleyball, and basketball. There is competition between the classes to determine the intramural champions. Instruction is also given in badminton, tennis, folk dancing, and gymnastics. Ball one loap frog. It can't be that bad, Rosanne. • Sports Girls who are particularly interested in badminton, golf, or tennis may join an after school team which competes with other high school groups in the city. The importance of physical education lies not only in conditioning the body but also in teaching sportsmanship which is needed in later life. As a result of taking physical education, the girls mature both physically and mentally. Sho flies through the air with the greatest of ease. MRS. CONOVER The girls' physical education department at Edison is supervised by Miss Barton and Mrs. Conover. Although the classes are large for two teachers to handle, they have given the girls a variety of activities with an emphasis on sports which the girls can enjoy after graduation. While teaching at Edison, Miss Barton and Mrs. Conover have improved the physical education department and have taught the girls to enjoy working on a team. Besides the regular classes there is the tenth grade leadership group in which the girls are instructed in refereeing games and assisting the teacher. When the girls are juniors, they become gym aides and are a great help to Miss Barton and Miss Conover. Gym Teachers MISS BARTON GYM AIDES—ROW Is B. Olejnicak, B. Godlcwski, D. Bourgerie, D. In the spring season of '59, the team, under the skillful direction of Miss Barton, took the title of City Girls' Golf Champions. Determination! School Life 145 This was the day, October 2, Homecoming 1959. As the day progressed, the tension mounted. Who would be chosen Queen? Who would reign with her as Prince and Princess? When the big moment arrived, the auditorium was filled with suspense. Oh's and Ah's escaped as, to the tune of Pomp and Circumstance, the candidates walked down the aisle to the stage for the coronation. Anticipation dominated the audience. At last, the scrolls were unrolled. The Queen? Sharon Flanigan. The Pincess? Marge Kociscek. The Prince? Dave Pierson. Homecoming festivities continued all afternoon and into the evening. And even though we didn't Make a Mess of Old Southwest, our school spirit was never lost. At halftime. Queen Sharon and her royal court led the parade around the football field. Sadie Hawkins this year had a full schedule of activities. On the day of Sadie Hawkins a few boys and girls went around the lunch room breaking the dress code by wearing clothes to advertise the dance. That evening dance music was provided by Hal Garvin. When the gals found the opportunity, they dragged their guys out to get married. In the two small chapels the marriages were performed by our Marryin' Sams, Mr. Swan-strom and Mr. Roach. To climax the evening, Joanne Donatelle and Dave Yates were crowned as Daisy Mae and I'il Abner. 150 It' too late now, Dave. Sno Daze The Sno Daze King candidates were presented on Wednesday. They were Ed Kaminski, Bob Risch, Dick Graf, Roger Johnson, and Dave Yates. On Thursday Dave was crowned king, and an allschool talent show entertained him. This night marked the end of months of planning and organizing a show to present to an audience. Once again thanks were given to Miss Ferguson for being the advisor. Vaudeville at Edison means the kids. They plan out the acts and organize into groups. They are the ones that will pull all of the acts together to put on a show that hundreds of people come to see. They are the ones that are out on the stage Vaudeville night giving all they've got. They're the ones that take the blue ribbon, look at each other, and say it was worth it. And the ones who didn't get ribbons—that was worth it too. This, the thirty-seventh Vaudeville Edison has put on, had the keynote-variety. Seven acts performed on the school stage this year. Beatdom was brought to life on our stage this year by a junior group. The act, Like Beat, told about two way-out beatniks who loved the same chick. The high-light of this act was an adagio dance. Chairmen: Bill Bergman and Ricky Clark. If Dreamt Came True Sophomores put on an act called Holiday in Haiti. This pictured the romantic Caribbean islands. Calypso numbers carried this act along. Something from special skills was Cossack's Dream. This showed some of the beautiful costumes and dances of the Ukraine. If Dreams Came True is a senior act centering around a well. Into this well coins are thrown and wishes are made. A little girl and boy are found in a toy shop that comes alive At the Stroke of Twelve. As they touch each of the toys the toys come alive and perform. Show Me the Way is another senior act. This is the story of the battle of wits between St. Peter and Satan to win the souls of two deceased people. Paris is the same as any other city in the day, but at night it comes alive. Under Paris Skies shows all the color and excitement of this city. What happened to that picture!?! These are only samples of the commotion that preceded each of our three deadlines. Everyone was sure they would never be met and the divisions of Wizard Staff—Boys' and Girls' Sports, Seniors, Faculty, Organizations, and School Life; eventually became one swarming mass of Wizards searching for original ideas the other might have. Under Mr. Brown's guidance, our efforts have now been rewarded with one lasting combination of zero hours that were met.
