r L a ETj vG ™ U f zs CtD C 3 mnicO 4 Faculty ..... Seniors ..... Organizations Sports ...... School Life DEDICATED TO NORTHEAST For most of us, it all started in the fall of 1947. Our usual, carefree routine was broken by the sound of a tardy bell at one of the nearby grade schools. Some of us attended Pillsbury, or maybe Prescott. Waite Park, or Lowry. No matter in which grade school we started, the routine was much the same. As we progressed through the grades, our thoughts ranged far beyond our local community; yet our social activities were limited to our own immediate neighborhood—Northeast. The grade schools provided for our future through social adjustment and academic achievement. By the end of our junior high term, the ’ scope’’ of our community had been greatly enlarged—both in area and in friends. The majority of us began to notice where our interests lay, and we began to think of our future in the community. For most of us, senior high brought about a great change. Now our classmates were students from all over the Northeast area. We chose our subjects on the basis of which would help us most in our future occupations. Academic and social achievement became more competitive, and our personal standings in the class were an all-important factor. Most of us made many important decisions and tried to make the most of what we were offered in the way of education. Many loved truth, and lavished life's best oil-Amid the dust of books to find her” —Lowell PAUL A. SAMUELSON, Principal Once again our school was under the supervision of our principal, Mr. Paul A. A leader must have at all times the drive and enthusiasm that any one member of the organization lacks. Patience and tolerance are also essential qualities of a band or any music director. Edison is extremely fortunate to have as its band director a man who fits this role. Among Mr. Lunkley’s accomplishments with the band arc high ratings in many state contests. The band members arc very pleased with Mr. Lunkley’s choice of music. Under the skillful baton of Mr. Lunkley, the band has become accomplished in classical and semi-popular music as well as the rousing marches. This is evidenced in their concerts and ratings in the state contests. His genuine and sincere concern for each student makes him a favorite with them. He has an ability to draw every ounce of talent from each member of the band. Mr. Lunkley is admired and respected by the whole student body and faculty for his outstanding work. Thus, our band continues to grow and improve with the help of Mr. Lunkley and each individual band member. MUSIC ADVANCES BAND—ROW ONE: E. Egler, R. Nckola, C. Berglund, J. Jalma, R. Hendrickson. The students of Edison have a wonderful opportunity to become better acquainted with music through the various musical courses offered. One of these courses is the band. The band has always been an organization to be proud of. The members have strived to do their best to develop good music. Our Edison Band was organized for the purpose of developing the musical interests and aptitudes of students who qualify. In early September the band begins its practice sessions. To add to our enjoyment the band plays at football games and at basketball games. The remaining days of the year the band rehearses for the Winter Concert, the Spring Concert, exchange performances with other schools, and commencement ceremonies. The band has been divided into two periods which gives each Student time for individual help and general improvement of the band. The music which Mr. Lunkley picks out for the band usually offers a real challenge for the members. As the band plays on through the years we will remember their accomplishments. HONOR Our Junior and Senior National Honor Societies arc groups of students in the upper fourths of their classes in scholarship and show evidence of the other requirements, service, leadership, and character. The Societies aim to create an enthusiasm for good scholarship, to develop worthy school and community citizenship, to stimulate devoted service to school, community and country, to encourage the development of trustworthy leadership, and to instill exemplary qualities of character. The candidates chosen for the Societies are rated by the faculty, and then voted on by the present membership. If any member should fall from his high standing in these qualities, he can be dropped from the Societies. SENIOR NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY—ROW ONE: M. Johnson, S. Eklund, S. Jaster, B. SOCIETIES No honor conferred by the school exceeds that represented by this Society. It represents the fundamental objectives for which schools arc established and gives recognition to those students who have attained the desired goals. Other honors at the disposal of the school arc only partial—in the sense that they recognize specialized ability, skill, or talent, but these Societies look upon education as the fundamental objectives. Throughout history man has recognized the value of such distinction and in one way or another has marked for special honor those who excel. Ancient and medieval universities established their honor societies. In modern times the coveted honor of election to Phi Beta Kappa outranks all other distinctions. In a student's election to these Societies, the whole school is honoring him. MISS ROSS SENIOR NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY—ROW ONE: M. Malasko, A. Christenson, L. Lystig, H. Scrum, K. Wiberg, R. Berg, C. It is an honor society for the students working in the field of speech. A student earns membership by his record in inter-school speech contest and in service projects. It is a nation-wide organization headed by Senator Carl Mundt of North Dakota. There are thousands of members all over America. Edison has had a better than average number of members. The Edison Forensic League is a club for students who want to work in speech and arc trying to qualify for membership in the National Forensic League. Any tenth, eleventh, or twelfth grader may belong. The purpose of this club is to encourage participation in all forms of speech — except drama. The membership has doubled since the club began. The purpose of the Debate Squad is to train students to think clearly and present arguments in a logical effective manner. THE SCIENCE EDISON FORENSIC LEAGUE—ROW ONE: S. Lunde, L. Jurek, N. The French Club was organized to give students an opportunity to become better acquainted with the French language and the French people. For many years the French Club has held a Christmas part)’ with the other language clubs as one of their activities. Students who have completed one year of French arc eligible for membership. In the spring of 1957, the first State German Congress was held at Robbinsdalc High School. About 400 Minnesota high school and college students participated in a full day schedule of business, a program, and an evening dinner with a stage show followed by dancing. The second German Congress will be held in 1959. The Spanish Club's purpose is to promote more understanding of people in other countries. To be qualified for membership a student must have completed the first year of Spanish and be in his second year. Our understanding of foreign lands was further broadened this year through the friendship of Magnus Sigtryggson, our American Field Service exchange student from Iceland. They regulate traffic in the halls and on the stairways of Edison. They also set an example of good conduct for all the students. Juniors and Seniors are eligible to become members, but they must be recommended and selected by the faculty with the approval of the present members of the Hall guards and Stair guards. To be considered they must maintain at least a C” average scholastically. Mr. Mankow-ski, the advisor, keeps his guards constantly on the alert for any violators of the school rules. Through the Hall guards and Stair guards the students have another important part in school government. It demands a most rigid form of training that only an athlete with great stamina can endure. The meets are run over a 1.9 mile course with as many as fifty boys partaking in one meet. This year’s team supported a 3 win, 3 loss record. Among the outstanding were Bob Erickson and Carl Christopherson. CROSS COUNTRY—FIRST ROW: D. McLeod. B. Mahloncy. D. Beihoffer. B. Erickson. J. SKIING Because of lack of snow the Ski Team was unable to have its regular cross country and slalom meets. They were able to hold their jumping meets at Wirth on snow that was brought in from the lakes. The team ended the season by placing fourth in the city and ninth in the state. These standings were determined at Duluth where the state meet was held. This was a good showing considering the poor skiing conditions, which hampered practice. Next year’s team should be superior in the jumping and cross country events. The skiers will have a much better season if good skiing conditions prevail. VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM—FIRST ROW: B. This year’s basketball team had but one returning letter-man, and inexperience proved to be the biggest handicap of our hard-working varsity. The highlight of the year was a victory over our time-honored rival, Washburn. Captain and leading scorer was Dave Dzubay. We look forward to next year, when the experienced underclassmen will begin with balance and poise, which this year's squad lacked. The sophomores finished the season with a six win, four loss record. The team played up to their ability in every game. The outstanding players were Mike Pawlyshn, Tom Jaros, Walter Peterson, Ron Wojicak, Denny Green, Bill Grivna, and Dean Lopata, a freshman. SWIMMING The 1959 swimming season ended with a record of 5 wins and 6 losses. Through the fine efforts of Dan Crocker, Dennis Terry, Jerry Jones, and Jim Lundell, the Edison tankers took 3rd place honors in the District 17 finals and went on to take 12th place in the state finals. The outstanding swimmer throughout the season was Dan Crocker, a senior who holds the City and District records in the 50 and 100 freestyle events, and who placed 3rd in both of these events during the state meet. Having had two close games with the breaks going against them, this could have easily been seven wins and three losses. The only thing the team lacked this year was a defensive reserve. This year there are ten graduating seniors, leaving only three returning lettermcn. Next year's team will be young and inexperienced, but as the season progresses they should do very well. TENNIS The Edison team had a fair season this past year even though they lost most of their matches. Their overall record was 2 won and 8 lost. This record is not very impressive, but the individual performances of the boys were good. Mike Russinik, Bruce Borchardt, and John Brecht showed outstanding improvement and were providing strong competition to the best in the city. Mike Dorso and Don Roscll manned the steady positions of 1st and 2nd singles and handled them very well despite a lack of experience. With respect to the other positions there was considerable changing to find the right combination of: John Borchardt and Mike Russinik at 2nd doubles. With the exception of 'Terry Thompson, the entire squad will return to the court next year We hope for a better season. Dennis Lindow broad jumping. Leland Grotto hands baton to Bob Erickson. TRACK Our cinder clads have enjoyed a fairly successful season this spring. The team was hampered by lack of depth and speed merchants in short distance events. Outstanding performers were Loren Cybyskc, Don Drane, John Humenansky, Ray Miller, Ed Roethke, and Captain Dennis Lindow. Don Drane and Ray Miller competed in the state meet with Miller taking second in the 880 yd. run. The coaching staff will face a re-building job next season with some promising underclassmen. Mrs. Conover is in charge of five physical education classes, in which she teaches activities that create good sportsmanship. The girls learn, to accept the judgement of others, to work in teams, and to know the rules of each game. They are also taught how to referee the games. Mrs. Conover feels that physical education is an important part of our daily lives. Although the physical education classes are large, Miss Barton strives to give the girls a well-rounded program of activities. Not only does she teach popular sports such as badminton, basketball, volleyball, etc., but she helps the girls to keep physically fit by daily calisthenics. The girls appreciate the fine program that has been set up for them. LETTER WINNERS—FIRST ROW: K. Chase. B. Widmark, G. Thysell. S. Nepsha. SECOND ROW: E. Egler. G. Wilson, N. Burkholder, S. Jaster. TENNIS The girls invaded the courts last season with spirit and enthusiasm. Although the record of wins and losses wasn't very impressive, the girls got a lot of enjoyment out of playing the other schools. In twelfth grade they take a course known at Play Production. In both these classes they study what makes good Drama, how plays are produced, and the principles of good acting. During the course of his four years at Edison, a student may participate in the class plays in order to gain experience in acting. DEBATE Students may take English with an emphasis on Speech. In this class they learn the fundamentals of speaking in front of groups. They gain poise and self-confidence. As they become more experienced in speaking before a group, they become eligible for the Forensic League and the Debate Squad. Here the)’ participate with students from other schools toward the common goal of self-expression through speech. PHYSICS In Physics the students learn how many of our modem conveniences work. It is a course designed to explain many of the basic concepts of the world of science. Each year, each student makes a project. The best ones arc entered in the Science Fair. These projects represent a good deal of work and individual thought on the part of the students. BIOLOGY In the Biology classes students study plant and animal life. They learn about the world of nature as it affects their lives. During the course of the year they perform many experiments including the dissection of various simple animals. They learn where to find samples of different types of plants. ART Students in the art classes learn the fundamentals of good drawing and painting. They learn to sketch many varied subjects, including still life and real life models. Students use a number of different materials in their work. These include charcoal, water colors, and many others. In this manner they are able to create a number of effects in their work. ART CRAFTS In the art crafts classes the students complete a variety of projects. They make many useful articles and at the same time learn the technique of good design. This year they have done chip carving, block printing, posters, and enameling copper jewelry. They have also done modeling in clay and wax. HOME ECONOMICS Home Economics is a one-year program which is divided into two sections: Food and Clothing. Each is taken for one semester. In the Foods division students learn the fundamentals of food preparation and the care of the house. Some time is also spent on the care of the family. In the Sewing division students learn how to make clothes for themselves and others. They learn many tricks of good grooming, also. This course is fine preparation for any girl whatever her vocational plans may be. INDUSTRIAL ARTS The boys’ shops are also divided into several groups. The print shop works to get our school paper, the RECORD, out on time. The students also have some work in photography. The woodworking classes are making furniture; while the classes in electricity are learning about house wiring. The students in the machine shop classes work with machines which are like those used in factories. STAGE CREW The Stage Crew prepares all scenery and lighting effects for every show presented at Edison. The)’ also take charge of any special sound effects that are necessary to the success of a dramatic production. These students donate their time and effort much more than most people realize. They n)ust be present at all programs in the evening, including some not presented by Edison students. INVENTORS CLUB Students in the Inventors Club have charge of the spotlights in the auditorium. They are present at many of the special programs presented in order to add lighting effects. During the school day, they give up their study hours in order to show visual aids in the classes and the Memorial Theater. These students add a great deal to our education through the presentation of movies, film strips, and other teaching aids. Another Senior, Larry Dullum, is using his skill in mechanics to build a hot rod. He has been working on this car for about one year. The finished rod” will be composed of at least six different cars. The original body cost less than $50 and the total cost at present is $300. Ron Eklund has proved himself to be a person of outstanding qualities. As an athlete, he reached the top as a gold medal winner in state competition; as a student, he stands high in academic achievement. In addition to these accomplishments, Ron is an outstanding Senior because of his outstanding philosophy and high ideals. His strongest competitors could not help but admire one who is a champion in every way. 163 rknfihi HONOR STUDENTS Although schoolwork has filled most of the time of the Valedictorians and the Salutatorian, each has found time for an outside activity. For the boys, these have centered in the field of science. Dick Bailey shows his interest in astronomy; Jerry Robertson, in electronics. Nuclear physics is Tom Lezniak's main interest; while pyrotechnics (fireworks) is Jerry Lezniak’s. Library work takes up most of Dorothy Crawford’s spare time. All of the boys have been in such activities as Rocket Club and National Honor Society. Dick has shown an interest in Choral Club, while the other boys have participated in German Club. Dorothy, along with being on the WIZARD staff, has been in French Club and Ushers Club.
