Miss Grace Garland, who once replied when asked why she stayed in the teaching profession, I love youth and I love, even more, working with them. So it is with that attitude Miss Garland has been an outstanding teacher at Edison High School for many years. Her varied interests and her sincere en- thusiasm for each of them, in school as well as out, have made her the versatile individual that she is. Tops on the list of her school activities is her coaching of many class plays. The Father of the Bride and I Remember Mama are two of many plays that she has handled. Miss Garland has organized her radio workshop classes into producing many school radio plays and a few television plays. As head of Edison's speech department, Miss Garland has guided many students in speech contests and on debate teams. In previous years, she was the advisor of the dramatic club, Footlights and Curtain. Outside of school, Miss Garland has an unlimited number of interests. She has been employed in Glacier National Park, where she had charge of camps on riding trails. She also taught horseback riding in areas of Minnesota. Miss Garland has sung in her church choir for years. She is sincerely interested in classical music and enjoys playing records on her newly purchased hi-fi record player. With all her varied interests and personal attributes, Miss Garland is, truly, an individual to be admired and remembered. It is for these reasons that the 1958 WIZARD staff is proud to dedicate their yearbook to Miss Grace Garland. +5 3 I my Q fl I Af I, V .. ,ff 1. ff! jf if il!! It performs many functions for the welfare of all students. The Student Council is composed of an executive committee, elected by the student body, and a representative from each advisory. This year's Student Council sponsored many social events such as, Homecoming, Sadie Hawkins, Xllfinter Carnival and Vaudeville. Also, they had many fund raising campaigns for the Organ Fund. Besides raising money and sponsoring social events, the Student Council makes many of the regulations which govern the students. The advisor of the Student Council, Mr. Larsen, has done an outstanding job in guiding the Student Council toward its many successful goals. His willingness to help the committees has been very much appreciated. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE: John Ebert, Presidentg Dennis Lindow, Vice Presidentg Tom Krinke, Treasurerg Cynthia johnson, Secretary. His ability to draw every ounce of talent from each member of the band is one of the factors which makes the Edison band an outstanding organization. His genuine and sincere concern for each stu- dent makes him a favorite with them. This Spring, the band under the direction of Mr. Lunkley, hopes to continue their tradition of rating very high in the state music contest. The music that Mr. Lunkley usually picks out for the band unfolds a real challenge to them. But with the guidance of Mr. Lunk- ley, the band always succeeds in presenting good class A music. Thus, our band continues to grow and improve with the help of Mr. Lunkley and each individual band member. MR. ELMO LUNKLEY. Director RUUSHNG SCHUUL SPHRHT AN BAND-First wuz' M. Tems, R. Buntrock, E. Starting in the fall, Choral Club and Tommie Tones worked very hard on the inspiring Christmas pageant which they presented at an assembly just before Christmas vacation. The entire Music Department helped make it a success. After Christmas, work began on the numbers to be presented in the state contest. The Easter program was an awe-inspiring choral presentation of Holy Week. Miss Ferguson has brought fame to our music department through the use of music students on her television program. SERVICE A D CHARACTER Both the Senior and Junior High National Honor Societies aim to create an enthusiasm for good scholarship, to develop worthy school and community citizenship, to stimulate devoted service to school, community and country, to encourage the development of trustworthy leadership, to instill exemplary qualities of character. Candidates for the Senior National Society must be in the upper fourth of his class in scholarship and show evidence of the other requirements, service, leadership, and character. Candidates for the Junior National Honor Society must have a scholarship average of no less than B and must also rate high in the other four standards. For several years the Senior Honor Society has given a tea in honor of retiring teachers. No honor conferred by the school excels that represented by this Society. It represents the fundamental objectives for which schools are instituted and gives recognition to those students who have attained most nearly the desired ends. Other honors at the disposal of the school are only partial in the sense that they recognize specialized ability, skill, or talent, but this Society looks upon education as a total product measured by the four dimensions of life. Throughout history, man has recognized the value of such distinction and in one way or another has marked for special honor those who excel. Ancient and medieval universities established their honor societies. In modern times the coveted honor of election to Phi Beta Kappa outranks all other distinctions. In a student's election to this Society, the whole school is honoring him for the attainments already made and for the promise he contains of continued excellence in the cherished ideals of this school. 75 EDISON FORENSIC LEAGUE-Firrl row: D. This year we have seventy members in the Edison Forensic League, twenty-five of whom are also members of the National Forensic League, which is an honor society for out- standing students in speech. The purpose of a forensic league is to give students interested in speech a chance to develop their ability by entering the various speech activities. These are debate, declamation, extemporaneous speaking, pantomime, read- ing, and discussion. We now take part in all these divisions. The first semester work is concentrated on debate, and in the second semester on the other activities. Our advisors are Miss Garland and Miss Schmidt, how- ever, we receive help from various other teachers who were N.F.L. members when they were in high school. The debate squad is composed of the outstanding debaters who compete in the advanced tournaments. If the interest shown and the rapid increase in mem- bership mean anything, the future of the Edison Forensic League should be very bright. 76 A ,WA ann? 'uf' f fT'f'?1ff'E' if -Q 2 A -.4 , ww .5 LA. Each club has several of its own activities each year, and together they put on a Christmas party for all foreign language students. French club has taken a trip to a French restaurant and arranged for a feature length French movie to be shown to the French classes. Spanish club has made an album en- tirely in Spanish to be sent to some South American coun- try. They also took a trip to a Mexican restaurant in St. Paul. German club went to a Twin City Christmas party for students studying the German language. Our understanding of foreign lands was further broad- ened this year through the friendship of Roberto Alazraki, our American Field Service exchange student from Milan, Italy. Roby, as he was called by all his friends, was a welcome addition to Edison. Roberto Alazraki, our A.F.S. exchange student from Milano Italy. FUREIGN NEIGHBORS GERMAN CLUB-Fin! raw: P. Schullo, T. It was in these rooms tht many of us first met the kids who were to become some of our best friends. The Monday bulletin became an important part of advisory business. Other Monday business prepared us for the future and left us with a good habitg that was the student banking day. Most contact between students and the office is taken care of during the advisory period. Other advisory functions include the distribution of notices, the collection of fees, and the discussions concerning action taken by the student council. In many cases the time spent in advisory is just the right amount of time to finish any last minute homework or to catch up on the latest gossip with our friends. All in all, the time spent in advisory was well spent. Re d- a mg the bulletin Cha ning S 5 if 1 i GROUP CAPTAINS- -Fm! wir: J. Eriikson. C. Bednarlc. -I. Pedersen, j. Agard, S. Fallilin. C. ANNUAL VAUDEVHLLE In February there is a much awaited, but anxiously dreaded day-try-outs day. For weeks ahead of time, each act works extra hard, and then, after doing our best upon the stage, we wait fearfully for the list, telling what acts will be in Vaudeville, to be posted on the front hall bulletin board. BROADWAY C April 24 and 25, 1958, the Edison High Student Council presented the 35th annual V.audeville. Tom Holland was the general chair- man, and Miss Ferguson was the faculty advisor. The show was wonderful and the audience could hardly tell that we were nervous. There were beautiful girls and handsome boys, en- chanting singers and graceful dancers. All in all, it was a wonderful production. 5 -QNPFFN Dofgrlt I 11 in 5 No fair pefking! Isn't 4 2 F Y :ff ,.. S? ws: Q21 W 4 . if X 1? .Q Us sf' 1 Qi 6 I a ggiiifiz f -Assay f Q , 52995 , . Theres nothing that we can add or subtract from the WIZARD which is now in your hands. We've had a lot of fun preparing the pages which will always create memories in years to come. We, the staff, will always remember the first time we walked into the WIZARD room. We l-:new absolutely nothing about making a book, but with the help of Mr. THE llf9h58 WIZARD STAFF Brown we finally got started. Choosing a theme was our first job. After many days of discussing various suggestions, we agreed upon the sea. We hope that in doing so, we have chosen one that is common to all and actually is a reflection of life. After the selection of a theme, we all settled down to the job of preparing the various sections. Many long hours FACULTY1 Gary Wafha and Barbara Nfpahar SCHOOL LIFE: Mike Dorso and Roberta Balstad.
