Its membership consists of outstanding representatives chosen by each advisory. One hour a week is devoted to the main meeting where the ideas and problems of fellow-students are discussed and decided upon. The complete council is divided into twelve committees which meet separately to carry out school activities pertaining to their section. The Organ Fund, Homecoming Festivities. Sadie Hawkins Day, Winter Carnival, and Vaudeville are just a few of the many functions carried out by our council. The advisor of the Student Council must be a person who is respected by both students and teachers and who has the qualities of leadership. Mr. Spolar accepted this position in the spring of 1956. Through his willingness to help and ability to lead, our Student Council’s activities have been very successful. We are proud of our student government for it makes Edison our school. MR. SPOLAR. Wong and Ute Schroeder, exchange teacher and student. stand with the United Nation flag which is the symbol of unity and freedom. Our students at Edison have a wonderful op) ortunity to become better acquainted with the languages and cultures of other countries. This is done through our language clubs which meet for the purpose of gaining knowledge and insight with these countries, and through the American Field Service. Miss Sorenson and Mrs. Kellner are, at the present time, the advisors of the German. French, and Spanish clubs. They work together with the officers of the respective clubs to plan the activities throughout the year. Germany sent to us, through the A.F.S., Ute Schroeder. a girl packed full of energy. Ute has brought with her many customs and qualities of her people and our hope is that she will bring back a sprinkling of our customs to her people. Honolulu is Mrs. Wong’s home where her husband holds the position as director of the World Brotherhood Organization. She brought with her a tiny little lad named Kimo. He is the Wong’s only child. Thus, through Language clubs and the A.F.S., better understanding of foreign countries is enjoyed by all students. GERMAN CLUB—First row: M. Rule, J. Hendrickson, President; Miss Sorenson. Under the direction of Mr. Lunkley, the members strive to do their best to develop good music. Our Edison Band was organized for the purpose of developing the musical interests and aptitudes of students who qualify. At present, there are 97 members in the band. In early September the band logins its practice sessions. To add to our enjoyment, the band plays at five of our football games. When the football season is over, the band learns new selections for its Winter Concert and the one performance at the Auditorium during the basketball season. The remaining days of the year find the band rehearsing for such events as the Spring Concert, exchange performances with other schools, and commencement ceremonies. School Sfrout Chapman. B. A leader must have at all times the drive and enthusiasm that any one member of the organization lacks. Patience and tolerance are also essential qualities of a band or any music director. Edison is extremely fortunate to have as its band director a man who fits this role. Among Mr. Lunkley’s accomplishments with the band are high ratings in many state contests. Mr. Lunkley is admired and respected by the whole student body and faculty for his outstanding work with the band. No band is complete without the help of a majorette to liven up the band performances at the games. Sandy Kimball, an Edison sophomore, has proved her talent very useful. She has earned, through performances with her baton, many medals. We Edison students are proud of Sandy and feel privileged to have her in our student body. Thus, our band continues to grow and improve with the help of Mr. Lunkley and each individual band member. “PreaeKtaup S f tt AoHcc 04tcent Saxophone: 1). Nordine, B. Bliss B. Welle, B. Langlai . Mr. Marcoulier, the Edison Swimming team completed its most successful season in many years. The team won three meets, lost five and tied two. This record gave Edison a tie for fourth place in the City standings. Danny Crocker, a sophomore, placed second in th“ City in the 100- yard free-style event. Other boys who were particularly outstanding included Norm Solberg and the Co-Captains Boh Laing and LeRoy Halbrooks. Since the team was composed mainly of sophomores and juniors, the prospects for next year's team are very good. The hockey team this year finished the season with a 3-5-2 record. In spite of their record, hoys such as Dave Olson, AI Forrest. Gene Swanson. Mike Solz, and Dave Gorski made Edison a great threat to all their opponents. Next year’s squad will Ire comprised entirely of sophomores and juniors with the exception of two seniors. Mr. Gunncrg said pros| ects for a successful season look good due to the fine efforts of many freshmen and sophomores on this year's squad. TEAM—First row: A. Forrest, R. Jrzior ky, D. OlM n, D.
