So too is our high school a stage, upon L which are enacted the multiple J I scenes characteristic of high school life. This, our 1955 Wiza1'd, is the official pro- - gram. Through it we hope to L give you a glimpse of the drama of Edison, and by pic- ture and story to make you feel an actual part of our produc- tion. As an instructor, he led us through the trials of physics, he entertained us as the emcee of many assemblies, and as a coach and athletic director, he helped to assure the success of our teams. But best of all, he is a friend to everyone, always ready with a smile, quip, or word of advice. This friendliness and his easy sense of humor have endeared him to students and faculty alike. In View ofthe many and varied roles he has played, and the excellence with which he has car- ried them out, we feel it fitting that we dedicate our 1955 Wiza1'd to a star performer, Mr. Homer B. As the curtain rose on the first act, we found SENIQR COORDINATOR-Mrs. Hhs' Pohlson ourselves at school, greeting all our friends. A 'few days later our foreign student. Chislaine Simon, arrived from Belgium. and in a short while she became a dear friend to all. At the Leadership Clubis weekend at lduhapi, we learned that living outdoors is really fun. Next came Sadie Hawkins Day, preceded by a turnabout week in which the girls chased the boys to tag them for the dance. Our Senior Class Play, Ramshackle Inn, kept us in suspense until the very end, when the murdereris name was finally revealed. On November 20, we took over Richie's service station for the entire day, in an effort to raise money for an organ for our school. The installation of an intercom system be- tween Dana Watten's home and Edison was our next project. It soon became a very natural and everyday occurrence to see Dana's green box in our classes and assemblies. Drawing the first act to a close was our annual Santa Claus Swing, com- plete with a beautiful frosted Christmas tree, and, . S of course, Santa himself. J. Sawyer and G. Morin sign the guest book at our Junior Prom. 7 was-,4 SENIOR ADVISORS-Row 'l: Miss Choudek, Miss Torneyp Miss Simmons, Miss Ramswiclr, Mrs. Pohlson, Mrs. Tillotson. Row 2: Mrs. Luther, Mr. Gunberg, Mr. Ahlstrom, Mr. Drage, Mrs. Cornelius, Miss Ward, Mrs. Keliner. Not in picture: Mr. Pile, Mr. Bauer. 22 , , .-M,-W-H Z2 -J Act two began with everyone working on term themes and talks, but it wasnit all hard labor. The Winter Class Party was held at the Columbia Chalet on February 26, with Qary Berg's band playing. Next on the agenda was Operation Washington, D. C., our exchange trip with a Washington high school, which proved to be a rare and wonderful experience. Our second act closed with our annual Vaudeville, filled with hard work, and tears of joy and excitement. The third and final act got off to a flying start with our Senior banquet. Held on May 4-, at the Curtis Hotel, it was a sharp reminder of our coming graduation. Our big Senior Prom brought it even nearer, and as we danced that night at the Calhoun Beach Club, we realized that this was probably our last Senior social event. The days rushed by, crammed with last-minute study, and suddenly Bac- calaureate was upon us. This service, which we attended in our caps and gowns, introduced the climax of our entire play - graduation week. Prac- ticing for the 'big night, turning in books, and going to the class picnic took up all our time. At last came the finale of our play - Commencement! As we received our diplomas, the curtains closed on a year of work, excitement and fun-one that would never come again - our Senior Year. In .ik ,im X 5 ggi? . . The majorettes add their color and skill. However. under the skillful baton of Mr. Lunk- ley. the band has become accomplished in classical and semi- popular music as well as the rousing marches. This is evidenced in their concerts and Aw ratings in the state contests. A broad program of instruction has been built upg a beginner progresses through four bands in preparation for the top 96-piece band. A student can learn the necessary skills in school and rent school instruments. but private lessons are encouraged by meriting points toward special music awards. The trophy pic- tured at the left was a new feature last year. and is inscribed each year with the name of the student voted the most valuable band member. Alter completing a year in a leadership class, the girls hecome gym aides. Then they help the gym teach- ers hy doing such things as taking attendance and refereeing games during class time. They have the opportunity to assist those girls who need individual help in certain sports. This not only helps the student a lot. hut gives the gym aide a real feeling of accom- plishment. It is played on a 60 x 100 yard field. The equipment consists of a hard leather-covered hall and a curved hockey stick, which is similar to an ice hockey stick. Each team has eleven girls. Basketball is one of the team sports taught in gym classes. The classes play games within their own class, and the winner of each class competes with the winners of the other grades. The winner in this tournament becomes the intramural championship team. Volleyball, another team sport. is popular with the older girls. It is a game full of action and suspense. The important factor to remember in playing is to keep one's position. Each girl has a certain place to stand, and it is important that she keep within her own bounds. Speedball is also a game full of action. It is played out of doors in the fall of the year. There are two goal posts at each end of the field. and the object is to kick the ball between the posts for one point. 9th GRADE FIELD HOCKEY CHAMPIONS-left to right: J. Sheldon, B. Neslund, B. Homecoming -- Day of Our 1954- Homecoming on October 8 started off with a suspense-filled assembly emceed by Steve Cannon, WMIN disc jockey. He announced the five queen can- didates as they were escorted down the aisle by five senior boys. Karen Cota, Marcia Oslund, Carol Hin- derman, Joann Pagel, and Lorraine Dzubak stood nervously awaiting the moment when Steve would read the name from the scroll and announce our 1954- Queen. i Royalty and Gala Events Judy Wiles, 1953 H.C. Queen, was ready with the crown of roses as Lorraine Dzubak was proclaimed our 1954- Queen. In the afternoon our Tommie stars played a 13-13 tie with Henry. At half-time our Queen and her four lovely attendants arrived on the field and took their places. The dance in the evening, held in both gyms with Nick Hubleis and Loring Pal- mer's bands, was a wonderful ending to a most per- fect Homecoming. -vi: ' Q' 3' 1 th 14, Zlf Qi' .ai 'l T i f i :'i' ff f fi' ..., 2 , Er. . The curtain falls now, as the act of another year is ended in the series of annuals that make up the history and tradition of Edison High. We, the staff of the 1955 Wizard, can now look back on the months of cutlines and deadlines that produced this yearbook. Haziness and uncertainty marked our early at- tempts. Searching files of annuals failed at first to yield the windfall of ideas that we would need. Then, in the theatre, we found our theme, and from its language we wrote our commentary. The layouts took their shape by development of trial and error sketchings. Finally, each picture found its place, and related copy was edited to fit. All this we leave behind now, as we join the rest of our senior class in the ranks of the alumni. Never will we forget these familiar walls or the wonderful times that took place within them. And it is with regret that we now say, 'iFarewell, and good luck! arm-an Z, er Editor 134 ,W left to Right: David Moe Boys' Sportsg Karen Bassin ger, Girls' Sports. left to right: Lorraine Dzu bak, Faculty: JoAnn Vincent Faculty: Mrs. Olsen, Advisor Your 1955 Wizard Staff Takes a urtain all . re 'i rv i , .
