F4 , d- lr' 4, Our F aculfy Edison High, a junior-senior high school, now has an enrollment of 2,021 the largest in Minneapolis. Mr. Samuelson, our principal, has many duties, and powers vested in him by the Board of Education. Any- thing that takes place in Edison is his concern. Mr. Samuelson often presides at school assemblies. Mr. lanes, Edison's assistant principal, takes care of much of the detail encountered in running a large school like Edison. His job is difficult and sometimes unpleasant, for he has charge of student discipline. He prepares the program of studies for the entire school and authorizes student program changes. In addition to the basic three R's, Edison offers courses planned to give practical training for lifeg such as secretarial practice, machine shop, cooking, electricity, and sewing. Teachers also help a pupil develop character and personality traits-teamwork through sports, culture and appreciation for fine things through music and books, and kindness, cour- tesy, and understanding through example. Q J- S iv C oncerf Orchesfra The Edison Concert Orchestra, which has been under the leadership of Mr. Arnold Bauer since September, 1952, has almost doubled its size in the past year. The orchestra consists mainly of string instruments, namely, violins, cellos, and basses. Recently, increased interest has been shown in playing strings, so that at present the orchestra has six bass players, nine cello players, and twenty-two violin players. More are needed, however. There are many occasions for the orchestra to perform in school, such as, assemblies, concerts, class plays, and graduation itself. The orchestra also presents programs at other schools in the city. In addition to improving their skill in playing, the orchestra members learn to co-operate and perform in a group. Preliminary training for the orchestra is best begun in the grade schools. However, many do not receive this preparation until they arrive at Edison where a thorough training on each instrument is given ,and continued throughout one's membership in the orchestra. Membership fees in orchestra are one dollar per semester for those using their own instrument and three dollars for those using school-owned instruments. Besides its musical activities, the orchestra enjoys picnics, parties, and other social events. ll., f 9 A A . Edison High Band Edison owes much to the Edison High School Band. This year, under the able direction of Mr. Elmo Lunkley, they have done an outstanding job. The band meets at fifth period every school day in room 331. At times, the sound of a stirring march can be heard through the halls. The band members are very proud of their uniforms which were bought last year through the help of the P.T.A. and the entire music department. The band members are very pleased with Mr. Lunltley's choice of music. They have a very good selection which includes marches, classical, semi-classical, and novelty music. Some of their favorite songs are El Burrito by Darcy, Ballet Egyptienu by Luigini, Procession of the Nobles by Rimski-Korsakov, Trumpet and Druml' by Lang, and selections from the musicals, Guys and Dollsl' and l'Carousel. The band has given numerous assemblies and concerts. They also have played at many of our football games. The Edison Band has improved in the past few years and is looking toward the forth-coming years as years of enjoyment. They hope, through music, to provide added enjoyment to the members of our school. 00.5 ORCHESTRA-Cello: C. Decker, C. Lar- sen, M. Iaroscak, D, Rcisewitz, B. Iohnson, S. Roff, B, Decker. Flute: C. Every student at Edison High School is represented in the Stu- dent Council through his advisory, which elects one regular member and onevalternate. The council plans and executes many of the activ- ities of the school year. Early in the fall they begin planning for Homecoming. The voting for the queen, the arrangements for the assembly, the enter- tainment between halves at the game, and the big reunion dance in the evening all add up to make Homecoming Day one of the high- lights of the school year. The assembly committee works all year in order to present the assemblies which feature both talent found at Edison and paid per- formers. The lunchroom committee is always trying to find ways to im- prove the lunchroom. The point committee sees that no one takes part in too many extra-curricular activities. Two new committees were formed this year: the contributions committee which takes care of any contributions the Student Council makes, and the locker inspection committee which helps with the inspection of lockers. Lack of height and experience hampered the team all year. ln conference play. Edison dropped its first six hall games. all to the top teams in the league. ln its seventh game. Edison downed Marshall -H-38 for the East Side championship. As usual. this traditional battle was hard fought all the way. with neither team getting an advantage until the Tommies in the fourth quarter iced the contest. In their next game the Tommies de- feated Southwest 57-39 on the XVilliams Arena floor. The next game with XVest was hard fought. but the fast-breaking Cowboys proved too much for the Tom- mies. The last game with South proved to he the most exciting game of the season. lt was a closely contested game with South finally edging out the Toms in the last minute 43-41. The team's record was not too impressive. liut Coach Louis Lopata said that the team worked hard throughout the season down to the last game. 'f r .fi I V! Q , . During the winter months, the seventh, eighth, and ninth grade gym classes spend one gym period a week ice skating on the pond at Iackson Square. The girls bring their own skates. This sport has proved very popular with the girls here at Edison. Gym Aides-Skafing The gym classes are under the able direction of Miss Barton. Mrs Conover. and Mrs. Smith. the latter being a new addition to our staff this year. There are many sports available here at Edison in which girls can partake. Every girl in the ninth and tenth grades has an oppor tunity to play on an intra-mural team: thus our competitive program for these grades is extensive. There is very little opportunity, however for girls in the eleventh and twelfth grades because of lack of space The inter-school teams are made un of irls who have won hirh . . . .l g 5' laces in the intra-mural com ietition. These teams com ete with P pl A n P other teanis throughout the city. The girls derive a great deal of pleasure from their competition with the other schools. This is the first year there has been a soxalled health education program here at Fdison. All ninth grade girls now take twelve weeks of health and twenty-four weeks of gym. GYM AIDES-Row l: L.
