Directly or indirectly, everything traces its origin to LIGHT, and this agent of progress reigns su- preme in the universe and in our school. As the different wave lengths of LIGHT produce va- rious colors, the courses which Edison High School offers pro- duce enlightened ni inds. Uncone sciously the students absorb the friendliness, optimisrn, and cour- tesy which Edison High School radiates. LIGHT is also the key to creative realms of science, photo graphy, and television. Therefore the staff of th e V340 WIZARD has attenipted to pree sent in the following pages glimpse' s of enchanting worlds within our school by selecting LIGHT ' as our theme. Edison, Edison High School symbolizes one of his greatest contributions to humanity, the in- candescent lamp. Edison High School emits brilliant rays of knowledge which encourage and elevate thoughts. The scintillating beams of achievement, sports- manship, and tolerance are never ex- tinguished. Opportunities for happiness radiate far and wide, and friendships which may shine for years are constant remind- ers of our school's influence. Because We fully realize and appreciate the LIGHT which she has generously bestowed upon us, the senior class of l94U dedicates this seventeenth volume of the WIZARD to Edison High School. Our splendid banquet on May 29 was the result of fine cooperation be- tween our social adviser, Miss Anne lacobsen, and the committee chairmen of the lune Class of l94O. Centering around Mexico, the banquet climaxed our four years at Edison. Cn fune 2 the Reverend Mr. Philip Cf. Murray, Pastor of the Park Baptist Church in St. Paul, spoke at our baccalaureate service, and the Edison Choir, under the direction of Mr. Sodergren, furnished the music. The theme of our commencement exercises held on tune 6 was Hlnterna- tionalism and Tolerance. The participants in the program were Evelyn fohn- son, and Denton Engstrom, salutatorians, and Eunice Iackson, and Lorraine Sem- anlco, valedictorians, who spoke on the following subjects: The History of fnternationalismf' Hlnternationalism and Tolerance in the United States, ln- ternationalism and Tolerance in the School, and Youth Faces the World. Edison won, 35-19. Grid Stars On Parade This year the Tommy Gridders roared through to their second straight co title which they shared with West. They dropped their only league loss to Central, and lost a thriller to St. Paul Washington in the Twin City play-off. The season reached its climax when the Wizards trampled a favored West outfit 35-19 before a record-breaking homecoming crowd. The games were marked by sensational collaboration on the part of Wilson, laros, Ford, and company. laros upset high school tradition when he consistently sent booming punts for 60 and 70 yards. Although the squad was rather small, the ability at the boys was on a high plane, and Coach Guzy was able to substitute heavily without fear of having his reserves out-classed. The team was extremely well bal- anced, having one of the best defensive records in the league as well as a potent offense, Tony laros, George Rosar, and Bill Robertson were named on the news- papers' all city teams. The Tommies' efforts were rewarded by various ban- quets given in their honor. The Amateur Sportsman's Club presented a beauti- ful trophy for our growing collection.
