What busy days these teachers now have before them. 'New advisees must be directed, lists of ages, grades, and schools formerly attended must be made out in alphabetical order, new names and new faces must be correctly associatedg classes and study rooms must be organized, lockers must be assignedg rules must be explainedg meetings must be attended. Then after the first week and the first gasps for breath, day crowds upon day, each minute full of class period problems and after-school-activity interests. The human river of two thousand boys and girls rushes on. Often the faculty are stunned by the realization of all the possibilities of this ever on-going, on-coming stream of youth. So much is to be done that often at the end of a tired day nothing seems to have been done. Yet beneath the sometimes meaningless surface swirling is a purpose. Suggestion, advice, rebuke, encouragement give direction to the main current. Where are you? Whither are you going?-questions given to the inner ear-are behind the dayfs assignments as faculty members throw doors ajar, opening vistas which students may follow. I N a morning in September the summer quiet of a large building on Monroe and Twenty-second was dispelled by the arrival of eighty-three faculty mem- bers. Vacation's knell had sounded. Some had been charmed and bewildered in Europeg some had studied long assignments, written papers, taken testsg some in need of Hvile trash had been at Work every dayg some felt the sportsman's thrill given by the fish-jerked lineg some behind the wheel had felt the glory of motion as they drove toward far horizonsg some not regretting yesterday and taking no thought for the morrow had done just nothing. A number were missingg some had been transferred to other schoolsg some had registered for university work in the East and the Westg one on Sabbatical leave had remained with her Ford in Europe. A few stranger-eyes measured the regulars, and the regulars appraised the new arrivals. Greetings, questions, introductionsg then all realized that in a few days no one would know except for the coats of tan and wrinkles less-pronounced that any one had been away. This atmosphere is the result of good fellowship among the teachers them- selves. We have such human teachersf, a pupil remarked. If the faculty spirit is marked by comradeship, it is so marked because all know how to laugh together as well as work together. At the Glenwood Park steak roast, when all gather at the long tables and the coffee pitchers make their rounds, the last barriers between the old and new members are broken down. The October sunset and the fire light cast a spell that lasts throughout the year. When the last song has been sung and the last stunt applauded, all feel that they belong to the Edison family. The men have their club. On Thursdays they eat-yes, they eat-bowl, play basketball, or bend over a chess-board. They are always busy, always ready to argue about reports of politics, and to laugh at Mr. Ahlstromis jokes. The women have their hours of dalliance. Party treads upon the heels of party. These hours of relaxation subtly bring harmony through understanding, and make .work more full of meaning because play moments help one to maintain a balanced view of the value of all things. 1 wenty
