This was our first experience as high school students, and the beginning of a four year span which led to triumphs, defeats, tears, and joy. Under the leadership of George Klinger, our Freshman Class President, many new experiences were encountered for the first time. Long remember- ed will be our first dance, Fashion Flair,” in the school gymnasium. We ended a successful Freshman year eagerly looking forward toward our Sophomore year. As Sophomores, with Alice Vela leading the way, we continued on with our various money making projects. Many of us ordered, received, and showed-off our class rings this year. Marshall Rankin was chosen to be class president our Junior year. Most of our time was devoted toward raising money for the prom. The big day finally arrived, May 4, 1962, the day for which we had all worked so hard. The scene was the Crystal Ballroom of the Hotel Gary, and the theme was Moonlight Enchantment.” Ed Nalborczyk was selected to lead us through our final year of high school, the year which we had all eagerly anticipated, but hated to see go by so fast. As Seniors, we had numerous activities; senior pictures, ordering of announcements, measurement for caps and gowns, and student teaching which proved an unnerving but deeply rewarding experience. The climax of four years of struggle and strain was finally coming into our view. There was Class Day, Baccalaureate, and finally GRADUATION, June 4, 1963! Many of us will never forget that feeling as we sat on the stage of Memorial Auditorium that night. Smiles, tears, sighs, and frowns accom- panied a review of happy and sad experiences as memories of four years of vigorous activities were recalled by the graduating seniors. We are now on our own, not as a group, but as individuals who will strive and look forward to a future full of success and happiness! We always remember the Prom as a high spot in our activities, and the 1962 Prom was no exception. Rain did not seem to dampen the evening for couples of Edison as they made their way to the Crystal Ballroom of the Hotel Gary. The event, which took place on May 4, 1962, was the Jr.-Sr. Prom entitled Moonlight Enchantment.’’ As Marshall Rankin, Junior Class President, led the Grand March, each girl re- ceived a pink poodle while her escort was given a green medallion as a memento of the evening. Highlight of the evening was the crowning of Avis Collins and Jim Radtke as Queen and King. Crowning were Nadine Webster and Gus Mavronicles, 1961 Prom Queen and King. After having enjoyed a most enchanting evening, the couples proceeded to Vogel’s Restaurant in Whiting, Indiana, where the Post-Prom was held. Music was provided by Joe Hamilton and Larry Spurlock. Early in the morning, as the moon broke through the clouds, the couples con- cluded a lovely and unforgettable evening. 66 “MOONLIGHT ENCHANTMENT THE GRAND MARCH 67 R eflector oyalty JUNIORS Janet and Don Margie DeLauriea, Reflector Editor, presents trophies to Senior Royalty, Jackie Markle and Jack May. Col- 72 HOMECOMING REMEMBERED The climax of many hard days of work finally arrived on October 5, 1962, when Alice Vela and Ed Pappas were crowned Homecoming queen and king. A parade, bonfire, shouting from the cheerleaders and fans at the game, and a dance imme- diately following the game are a few other moments to remember from the 1962 Homecoming festivities. In charge of all the planning for Homecoming was the Student Council. From here, various committees were se- lected to make all the arrangements. These committees worked vigorously to try to make Homecoming-1962 a big success, and by the reaction of students, teachers, and parents, they most certainly did ! To the Student Council, and especial- ly the Homecoming Committees, a great big thank you from everyone and hearty congratulations on a job well done! BUSINESS LEADERS IN ACTION The FBLA is a national organization composed of those students who are en- rolled in business education courses and who are interested in business careers. There are over four hundred local chapters in the United States, in colleges as well as high schools. This year, under the capable leadership of Mrs. Helen Davis, the Edison chapter of the FBLA was very active. They had their first meeting in September and all worked towards developing business leadership. OLD MEMBERS Bottom row: R. Cuevas, L. Frankiewicz, G. Bush, T. Gutier- rez, K. Kimberly, G. Ferran, A. Their hopes were fulfilled when over fifty of them boarded a bus bound for the Ball State Campus in Muncie, Indiana. The first night the Edison chapter, along with chapters from all over Indiana, attended a meeting which opened tne 1963 state convention of the Future Business Leaders of America. Later in the evening, they were entertained with various acts presented by various groups, ranging from dramatic readings to comedy. At the conclusion of the program, the girls returned to their rooms. Although many rested, few slept, for the next day’s events were foremost in their minds. The night was spent in eating, visiting the others, and enjoying the free television pro- vided in each room. The next morning everyone was up bright and early, ready for the new day. Re- turning to the campus, they attended another meeting at which various business leaders spoke. Later, the new state officers were announced . The annual conven- tion was closed with a luncheon. The members have tried to increase Edison’s school spirit and have made some progress, but much is still needed. The club contin- ually encouraged the team throughout the year, whether winning or losing. We’re proud of our team!” Yes, no matter what the outcome of the game was, the cheerleaders and members were always proud of the team. This year, the club was very active. As usual, they had their annual Homecoming Mum Sale and dance in the school gymnasium. An added attraction for members at football games this year were green and white mittens purchased by the club. Selection of cheerleaders for the coming year concluded the activities for the ' 62-65 year. TOUCHDOWN! 85 OLD MEMBERS Bottom row: J. Bonko, R. Kish, B. McNally, L. Mold, C. Burke, S. Dudas, G. Its first aim is to create an active and intelligent interest in all types of theatre activit- ies. Secondly, it aims to develop an appreciation of good theatre, motion pictures, radio and television. Third, it aims to improve the quality of the work of the students in secondary schools, as well as to give them a worthwhile leisure time activity. A spirit of cooperation and an understanding of our fellow students in order to broaden one’s own cultural growth are other goals of Thespians. The motto of the society is ' Act well your part; there all the honor lies.” In order to become a member of the Thespians a student must earn their full equivalent of points. These points can be earned by participation in dif- ferent plays and by doing outside work, such as speeches or monologues. Once the quality of the work is approved by the troupe sponsor, a person is eligible for membership in the Society. Eligibility to member- ship shall not be contingent in any way upon a vote of student members of the Society. DRAMATICS The purpose of speech club is to gain expression, poise and all the facets of speech. The fundamentals of reading also play an important part, as was shown in the Pied Piper of Hamiton”. Throughout the year, the club found itself busy entertaining others with its musical ability. Making its first appearance, the choral group presented the Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” in the school gymnasium. Under the direction of Mr. Roland Ralph, sponsor, the group combined for the first time with members from the Senior Dramatics Class for this presentation. During the yuletide season, the carollers, along with various other organizations, presented the student body with a Christmas program as a climax to 1962. Starting off the new year, the club began rehearsing for the May Music Festival at Memorial Auditorium. The Glee Club concluded its year of activity by singing for Class Day, Bacca- laureate, and GRADUATION. I. J 102 GLEE CLUB IN MASS o CO Front row: A. Borrego, S. Bossc. D. Besser, S. Mihok, A. Having an inexperi- enced team, due to the loss of twenty-one letter- men from last year’s championship squad, the boys took their lumps. After many hours of long hard practice in the summer heat, the Blazers made their first ap- pearance on the Gilroy Stadium gridiron in an exhibition game against cross-town rival, Wirt. Before a Football-O-Rama crowd of 10,000, the Troopers easily defeated the Blazers, 18-0. However, the Green and White from Edison proved to be no pushover throughout the year, as they lost four of their games by a combined total of 28 points. George Klinger, guard, Ed Pappas, back, and Rene Garza, fullback, served as 1962 co-captains for the Blazer team. Both Klinger and Pappas were named to the All-Conference first team. - 1962 - FOOTBALL SCHEDULE EDISON 0 (Football-O-Rama) EDISON 6 EDISON 12 EDISON 32 EDISON 18 EDISON 6 (Homecoming) EDISON 0 EDISON 0 EDISON 6 EDISON 0 WIRT 18 HIGHLAND 13 DYER 14 E.G. Conf. 117 BLAZERS UNDEFEATED AT HOME One of the highlights of the 1962-63 basketball season was the perfect season registered by the Edison Blazers on their home floor. Victories were recorded over Andrean, Emerson, Horace Mann, East Gary, Chesterton, Highland and Dyer. The boys did fairly well in conference competi- tion by placing third in the standings with a record of 7-3. They were also the only team to defeat the conference champions, Griffith Panthers, in season play. In this game, the Blazers showed desire and determination which signified the type of basketball that they played throughout the season. Senior members of this year’s team were Jim Johnson, Jack May, Ed Nalborczyk, and Bob Witt. Witt and Johnson served effectively at the forward position, while May and Nalborczyk helped under the boards. Sportsmanship, desire, and determination were a few of the traits which made us proud of our team. 1962-1963 SEASON SCORES EDISON 77 ANDREAN 54 EDISON 44 TOLLESTON 51 EDISON 66 EMERSON 59 EDISON 51 HORACE MANN 48 EDISON 61 EAST GARY 47 EDISON 79 GAVIT 57 HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT EDISON 50 HORACE MANN 72 EDISON 54 GRIFFITH 52 EDISON 57 CROWN POINT 70 EDISON 81 WIRT 63 EDISON 72 MORTON 86 EDISON 67 CALUMET 75 EDISON 74 CHESTERTON 71 EDISON 65 LOWELL 63 EDISON 59 PORTAGE 66 EDISON 67 HIGHLAND 48 EDISON 57 MERRILLVILLE 79 EDISON 60 DYER 53 Back row: Coach Forsberg, J. The B ’ team, under the guidance of Coach Andy, won the Calumet Conference champion- ship and placed second in the city holiday tourna- ment. After a shaky start, the reserves were able to find their footing and go on to end the season with a record of 17 wins and 4 loses, winning their last ten outings in a row. Thus, the Edison basketball picture could be a bright one, in the year’s to come, since there were only four seniors of the varsity squad, while the ”B” team consisted of all sopho- mores. Thank You.” THE REFLECTOR STAFF 129 Our yesterdays follow us; they constitute our life, and they give character and force and meaning to our present deeds. -—Joseph Parker In this book, the Reflector has imprinted those yesterdays that were but a few days and months ago. We cannot now know the full significance of those yes- terdays. It is the Reflector that will remind us decades from now what those yester- days really were. I lt seems fitting that each school year begins in autumn. Autumn is a season of joy and melancholy. We must not wither and die, yet magnificent autumn comes . . . . . . like a warrior with the stain of blood on his brazen mail. The cold, gray skies of winter disturb the soul. We find refuge in man, his teachings and fellow- ship. Spring returns. Oh! What we do. Summer comes and goes. We know not where. The seasons we cannot escape. It is the seasons that remind us how short life really is. It is our fervent hope that this Reflector catches a few of the se asons’ yesterdays. Margie Editor-in-chief 130
