Edison Wins Sectional Crown Edison High School turned out its winnlngest baseball squad ever, including a sectional crown. The Charger diamondmen got off to an outstand- ing start by knocking off its first 13 opponents, but then lost Lady Luck and thus dropped its last six games. Edison's opener came on April 7, a double header with Vermilion. In the first game the Charg- ers dropped out five hits which was enough to give them a 4-0 win. The Chargers came on strong in the nitecap as they knocked out seven hits to give them an 8-3 victory. Edison played errorless ball the first game and made only one miscue in the second. The next victim of the Charger big orange machine was the lVlapleton lVlounties, who gave Edison its biggest test but still fell to a 6-5 defeat. On April 16, Edison faced its first Firelands Conference opponent, New London. The Wildcats plated four runs in the top of the first, but no more the rest of the game. The Chargers then took over and sent 16 runs across to mark their fifth victory without a loss. April 19 proved to be Edison's day as they played their last game of the regular season and downed lVlargaretta 3-O in a non-conference contest. Edison came upon its toughest encounter yet as they met the lVlonroeville Eagles on the Charger's home diamond and made them their eighth victory by a score of 4-2. lVlay 5 was the day Edison's team made school history as they won their first sectional game by defeating Ashland Crestview 5-1, which gave the Chargers a 11-0 overall record. Three days later the Chargers brought home the first Sectional Crown ever at Edison, plus their thirteenth victory, which was over Vermilion. The Chargers dropped their last six games. The other loss was their district encounter to Crestline, 4-O. The leading hitter on the squad was junior, Dan Willis, with a .428 average. The leading pitchers on the team were Steve Shaw, 6-3, and Jim Salmons, 5-3. Two fielders, Dan Willis and senior, Bart Hib- bard went errorless this season.
