Chessmen Outstanding Checkmate! Pi The main purpose of Chess Club is competition, just as any other sport with one exception, it is mental competition and not physical. Edison Chessmen displayed themselves in matches this year with wins against St. Mary's, 4-6, St. Paul, 4-15 a tie against St. Mary's 3-3, and a loss to Huron, 42-EM. Team A, who takes the top five positions in play are Bill Boyden, Jeff Ward, Bob Boyden, Richard Mills, and Mike Shover. TOP, FRONT ROW: Tammy Caudill, Joyce Kamens, Mike Old, Darrell Maines, Mike Shover, Stanley Wilnau, Mark Stratton, Ken Pittinger, Dave Hupfer. ROW TWO: Dixon Miller, adviser, Loren Heckelman, Jerry Rock- well, Bill Boyden, Kyle Hennings, Carl Burris, Hal Simon, Dick Mills, Jeff Ward, Dwane Schaffer, Eric Meyers, Debbie Agee, Kim Suhanic. Winter was filled with the sound of music as Edi- son's Varsity Choir presented one solo winter con- cert, and a combined Christmas concert with the Edison Varsity Band. The combined Christmas concert was presented on December 19 and was conducted by Mr. Nick Geor- giafandis and student teacher, Mr. John Murphy. Mr. Murphey directed Glory to God in the Highest by Pergolesi for the Choir, and Casa Grande by Gass for the Band. Rita Young was featured in the soprano solo in O Holy Night , while the Edison Choral Ensemble performed The Christmas Song . The con- cert was dramatically climaxed in the combined effort of the Band and Chorus performing Hallelujah Chorus. The next concert presented by the choir was the Annual Winter Concert held on Sunday, March 11. This concert was highlighted with various senior stu- dent conductors and soloists. Two ensembles partici- pating in District ll Solo and Ensemble contest were also featured. Barb Rooker conducted Ave Maria while Kathy Likes sang I Heard You Singing. ln the second half of the concert Paul Phillips conducted No Man ls An lsIand. The Edison Chamber Ensemble performed Evening Serenade and Girls Ensemble, featuring soprano soloist Sheree Bruns, sang Ride The Chariot. The concert ended with the spiritual There Will Be Peace In The Valley.
