DEDICATICN A definition to cover everything which a teacher represents would be impossible to find in any book because he is a multitude of things to many people all rolled into one. The word teacher stands as but a symbol of those unseen qualities which the teaching profession demand. Using the word teach as a basis, however, we shall endeavor only to mention some of the more admirable characteristics applicable to our dedicatees and symbolic of teachers everywhere: A T-tireless: The first thought that the very word teacher brings to mind is that his day does not end with the ringing of the bell. lt denotes, also, that he must be willing to stay awake nights to correct homework and tests, to make lesson plans, to review his curricula, and to keep abreast of current events which are relevant to his course of teaching. All this, and more, for he must always be accessible to those students who need his help, and he must always be ready to guide, to encour- age, and to lead the student to attain his maximum potential. E-enlightening: An efficient teacher should be willing to supplement a rigid course of 'study intermittently with information of interest which pertains to his subiect. If he keeps a drab classroom, makes no attempt whatsoever to present lectures which are both informative and inter- esting, or follows a steady, monotonous routine, then, no matter how efficient he may be, the courselwill doubt- less be boring. lf a course of study falls into this groove, the student tends to lose interest and does not gain the full value of the instruction. This is one more setback for a person whose life' can lead to great possibilities. How important this is in the present day, when proper interest in education may mean the difference between survival or death, world peace or total destruction! A--adventurous: A tecicher must also have a spirit of ad- venture, he must be an explorer. He must constantly be willing to discover new techniques of presenting materi- als, to explore new possibilities in teaching methods, to employ new modes of thinking and to improve on his own. In the space age of today, it is truly a challenge to a teacher of any subiect other than science, to make our past heritage iust as exciting as our present inheritance. C-confident: A teacher should be confident and assured in his knowledge. This confidence should be reflected in his poise, appearance and manner of speaking. lf he can command the attention of his class and hold .them with his clear-cut, concise vernacular, he will gain both the admiration and the respect of his students. The effective- ness of his approach will also be determined by his self- assurance. A student must feel assured of the reliability of his teachers and a teacher's confidence does much to help. H-helpful: A teacher should try to satisfy and stimulate the interests of apathetic students. ln our present-day society, with its many complexities and fears, all of its techno- logical advancements and political problems, this is the most important work of the teacher. Helping each indi- vidual to attain his greatest capability is the only answer for preparing the future America to tackle those problems which it must face. 5.4 The aforementioned attributes are iust a small part of the things which the teaching profession represents. lt is truly a challenge for anyone who wants to become a teacher to meet these standards, and very few ever do. To attempt is the first step and to persevere is the second. And althougl' the rewards may be small, the satisfaction of seeing one whc made the grade is the real pay-off. Laurels to teachers everywhere, to ours at EDISON, anc especially to our grand dedicatees! We think they're the top: and we're proud to recognize them in this manner.

As head of the vocal music department, Mrs. Bue is undoubtedly always busy. Guiding young voices is her passion and she has nurtured to perfection some of the finest voices at Edison. Through her perseverance, our music department has become one of the best represen- tatives of Edison to the outside community. lt would certainly be hard to visualize Edison without this plucky, good-natured woman whose strictness will someday be realized as a boon to those who have known her. We pay tribute to her and to the music department through her, and we hope that through this insignificant means, we are able to convey the great respect and pride we have because she teaches here. 43 LOUISE R. PIERCE MARlO'N BUE Mrs. Pierce is one of the most active teachers at Edison. Our chemistry and physics departments would suffer a true loss without her. This do-it- yourself teacher is constantly busy formulating ideas and then seeing them realized. Her spirit of doing things and doing them well seem to per- vade into the very being of her students them- selves. But'even though she is kept busy with school clubs, classes, and various other functions which she heads, nevertheless, she still finds time to help every student with his individual problems and to inspire him to attain his maximum poten- tial. Throughout her career at Edison, our students have come to respect her for her good iudgment, honor her for her wisdom and intellect, revere her for her inspirational guidance and love her for her concern over the welfare of everyone she knows. She has truly exemplified the qualities of the teaching profession in every way, and then some, and it is but a small tribute that we recog- nite her in this way.
