I O3 3 OUR Halls of Ivy -EdisOn's main entrance . . . a DEDICATICN A definition to cover everything which a teacher represents would be impossible to find in any book because he is a multitude of things to many people all rolled into one. The word teacher stands as but a symbol of those unseen qualities which the teaching profession demand. Using the word teach as a basis, however, we shall endeavor only to mention some of the more admirable characteristics applicable to our dedicatees and symbolic of teachers everywhere: A T-tireless: The first thought that the very word teacher brings to mind is that his day does not end with the ringing of the bell. lt denotes, also, that he must be willing to stay awake nights to correct homework and tests, to make lesson plans, to review his curricula, and to keep abreast of current events which are relevant to his course of teaching. All this, and more, for he must always be accessible to those students who need his help, and he must always be ready to guide, to encour- age, and to lead the student to attain his maximum potential. E-enlightening: An efficient teacher should be willing to supplement a rigid course of 'study intermittently with information of interest which pertains to his subiect. If he keeps a drab classroom, makes no attempt whatsoever to present lectures which are both informative and inter- esting, or follows a steady, monotonous routine, then, no matter how efficient he may be, the courselwill doubt- less be boring. lf a course of study falls into this groove, the student tends to lose interest and does not gain the full value of the instruction. This is one more setback for a person whose life' can lead to great possibilities. How important this is in the present day, when proper interest in education may mean the difference between survival or death, world peace or total destruction! A--adventurous: A tecicher must also have a spirit of ad- venture, he must be an explorer. He must constantly be willing to discover new techniques of presenting materi- als, to explore new possibilities in teaching methods, to employ new modes of thinking and to improve on his own. In the space age of today, it is truly a challenge to a teacher of any subiect other than science, to make our past heritage iust as exciting as our present inheritance. C-confident: A teacher should be confident and assured in his knowledge. This confidence should be reflected in his poise, appearance and manner of speaking. lf he can command the attention of his class and hold .them with his clear-cut, concise vernacular, he will gain both the admiration and the respect of his students. The effective- ness of his approach will also be determined by his self- assurance. A student must feel assured of the reliability of his teachers and a teacher's confidence does much to help. H-helpful: A teacher should try to satisfy and stimulate the interests of apathetic students. ln our present-day society, with its many complexities and fears, all of its techno- logical advancements and political problems, this is the most important work of the teacher. Helping each indi- vidual to attain his greatest capability is the only answer for preparing the future America to tackle those problems which it must face. 5.4 The aforementioned attributes are iust a small part of the things which the teaching profession represents. lt is truly a challenge for anyone who wants to become a teacher to meet these standards, and very few ever do. To attempt is the first step and to persevere is the second. And althougl' the rewards may be small, the satisfaction of seeing one whc made the grade is the real pay-off. Laurels to teachers everywhere, to ours at EDISON, anc especially to our grand dedicatees! We think they're the top: and we're proud to recognize them in this manner. As head of the vocal music department, Mrs. Bue is undoubtedly always busy. Guiding young voices is her passion and she has nurtured to perfection some of the finest voices at Edison. Through her perseverance, our music department has become one of the best represen- tatives of Edison to the outside community. lt would certainly be hard to visualize Edison without this plucky, good-natured woman whose strictness will someday be realized as a boon to those who have known her. We pay tribute to her and to the music department through her, and we hope that through this insignificant means, we are able to convey the great respect and pride we have because she teaches here. 43 LOUISE R. PIERCE MARlO'N BUE Mrs. Pierce is one of the most active teachers at Edison. Our chemistry and physics departments would suffer a true loss without her. This do-it- yourself teacher is constantly busy formulating ideas and then seeing them realized. Her spirit of doing things and doing them well seem to per- vade into the very being of her students them- selves. But'even though she is kept busy with school clubs, classes, and various other functions which she heads, nevertheless, she still finds time to help every student with his individual problems and to inspire him to attain his maximum poten- tial. Throughout her career at Edison, our students have come to respect her for her good iudgment, honor her for her wisdom and intellect, revere her for her inspirational guidance and love her for her concern over the welfare of everyone she knows. She has truly exemplified the qualities of the teaching profession in every way, and then some, and it is but a small tribute that we recog- nite her in this way. JOHN F. NOLAN Art Advisor QUESS ELLIS Business Advisor VICTOR TOM Editor INVENTOR EDlTOR'S MESSAGE Another year has come and gone and once again your INVENTOR has tried to capture within its pages those bits of memories that one will cherish for a long time to come. However, with the passing of another year, comes also the marking of another milestone in INVENTOR history, for truly, without boasting, I can say that this year has seen considerable progress in the scope of planning and context of this book. - I should like to take this opportunity to express my sin- cerest gratitude to everyone on the staff for working so diligently and so well together. Without their combined efforts, this book might never have been realized. Special recognition should go to the members of Team No. I headed by captain, Winston Wong, for working so industriously in bringing in their quotas first. As a matter of fact, all the members of our excellent ad staff should be congratulated for acquiring the money which has helped to pay for the new ideas and techniques used in this book. To all my lovely and able heads of the various depart- ments, to my right-hand man, Milt Morales, to the art and write-up staffs, to our talented cartoonist, Rudy, to Mr. Ellis and his staff, and to Mr. Nolan, our head photogra- pher, chief worrier and wonderful advisor: a great big THANKS! MacDONALD ln every modern business and industrial organization the employees as well as the management strive to make the organization an efficient and successful place of business. Although much money and effort are spent on the comfort and convenience of the em- ployees, the only reason for the company's existence is the success of the final product, which is the manufactured piece of merchan- dise. lf the business organization fails, the employees are out of a iob and without means of livelihood. Your school may be likened to a business organization. You are the employee and the faculty is the management. However, as well as being the employee, you are also the end product. You, the finished product, are presented to the community after grad- uation. For your comfort and convenience the school provides you with student govern- ment, social affairs, assemblies, athletics, eating facilities, and comfortable and safe buildings. But, don't forget the end product. You are here to become a more informed and better educated individual. lf you, as a student, shirk your duty, you will not be prepared to meet the challenge of college or a iob and the school will have failed in its goal. So, while you are a student here, take advantage of the opportunities offered you and be happy, but, do not fail to master the basic subiects, for they may well build and prepare you for your future life. Neither do we see Edi- son's students with brooms in their hands. We see, rather, a staff of efficient custodians who do the iob that might otherwise go undone. Our custodians are a kindly lot, who are willing to help when and where they can, to make Edison the fine school of which we are proud. Another thing we are proud of and very fortunate to have is our fine staff of cooks who plan, cook, and prepare nutritious lunches for our students and teachers. Every day, trays rattle and silverware iingles as hun- dreds of Edison students receive their meals in our modern cafe' terial It is lunch that keeps us going through the day and the lunch served at our cafeteria does the iob. , W,1. Happy-go-lucky seniors! At last the moment that we have been waiting for has arrived. We loved being buried under all the senior activities: our baccalaureate service, senior picnic,.dress-up day, senior week, senior banquet, junior-senior prom, and finally grad- uation. Behind us we leave our four years of learning, our friends, our teachers, happy memories, and our ivy-covered halls. Recalling memories, we recall with ioy the iunior-senior prom, Cherry Blossom Paradise, where we bid our last farewell to the class of l958. look- ing back into our senior year we have treasured memories of being the first class to exercise senior privileges and organize a senior constitution. We had the privilege of getting several tables reserved for seniors only. Many hours of time were spent on our senior lawn and walk. In the assemblies we had the privilege of leaving the auditorium before the underclassmen. We entered as shy timid freshmen, but now we are entering the world of adults as educated seniors. From our class will emerge lawyers, teachers, scientists, doctors, and many more others. Hats off to the class of 1959 and a million pats on the back for their enthusiasm and spirit. The California Scholarship Federation is an honorary society of those students with high scholarship averages, usually a B plus or better. However, scholarship students don't go about with a serious look on their faces and think all the time, even they must have their fun. So they started off their year with a dinner at the Basque Hotel. During the course of the year, presided over in the tall semester by President Af lto, and during the spring by Rober' Reyes, this organization was chiefly occu- pied with the question of raising money for some worthwhile proiect for the school. By participating in the two carni vals, selling cakes, and throwing an eve ning dance called April Fantasy, the' finally made enough to realize their goa and used their money to complete th' dressing-room paint iob by another clul by purchasing new light sockets and wal plugs, etc. NIIORS. Hilton, stalislician. , VARSITY BASKETBALL This year, Coach John Toomasian's hoopsters had an outstanding season, even though they came in second place in the league. After winning the Kings- burg tournament, an achievement which appealed to all the players, our dribblers continued to be the chief contenders for first place in the league. All of Tiger- town was elated when, after a thrilling game, we came from behind to beat Fresno High by one point-47 to 46l Perhaps, with this victory, our Tigers became too overconfident and we were all astonished when, of all things, Merced beat us on her home court by one point. lt was THE great let-down because now, we and our chief opponents, the Warriors, were tied for first place. Although our boys played valiantly, the superior height of Fresno semed to predominate throughout the game, and they beat us, 38 to 50. Our hoop season closed after we defeated Clovis, 56-50. Among our Tigers who made the All-City Team were Hart Polk, the highest scorer, and Cleo Johnson, our second scorer. The rest of our hoopsters, who all played very. well and should receive mention are: Johnny Wollen, John Green, Carl Humphreys, Cal Mayo, Cliff Pickens, Gene Johnson, Karl Richmond, Ernest Williams, and Herb Daniels. I believe our season was an excellent one, following Edison tradition, and there should be no reason to tear for the future,'-for as always, wherever you find the best, you'll find our Tigers there, too! They continued on this winning spree throughout the season by winning league play at a ratio of 8:2 and ended up the season with a 15:2 seasonal margin. The starters and rebounders were Kenneth Fairley, Jerry John- son, Billy Hicks, Emanuel Dean, Richard Streets, and Ronnie McNair, The players that received basketballs were those mentioned above plus Charles Fane, and Fred Greco. With such a wonderful team and season we can look forward next season for another potential championship team. Starting Line-up, Counter-clockwise: F. Greco, B. Hicks, K. Fairly R. McNair, R. I VARSITY BASEBALL Our varsity baseball team is fortunate this year to have brand new uniforms. The uniform, light grey with a tiger emblem on both shoulders, have EDISON sewn on the front. Black cops initialed with an E top off the outfit. Under the capable leadership of Coach Vico Bon- detti, our baseball team started the season by scalping the Sanger Apaches in a non-league game. Students who advanced from Junior Varsity are Billy Hicks, Eddie Combs, Herb Daniels, Ronnie McNair, and Hart Polk. Other players are Fred Greco, Sho Kamimoto and Ronnie Bradley. But the boys showed courage and determination to play positions they had never played before. They fought the season to the end even though they were handicapped at the beginning of the season because they hadn't played enough. Manuel Bracamonte was catcher, Henry Perez and Charles Herrera, pitchers, Kenneth linger, first base, Kimio Miki and Danny Ruiz, second base, Gutio Silva and Mike Bracamonte were third base. Guarding left field was Andy Miller and Will Brown, Nick Waller, center field, Robert Reyes, and Levy Taylor, right field, Kenneth Lewis, shortstop. At present the leading hitters are Waller, Silva, Perez and Linger. Next year we are looking forward to a very success- ful season with these boys. CROSS COUNTRY. First Row: W. Greene, J. Barnes, C. This year's track teams followed the tradition exactly. Outstanding cindermen are Gene Johnson and John Tiny Wollen, Edison's high iumpers. Top 440 runners are Eugene Marzette, Clifford Pickens, Maur- ice Sango, Wesley Wingfield, Albert Williams, James Riley, and Bill Riddlespriger. Edison's top broadiumpers are Melvin Johnson, James Nixon, George Cleveland, Eugene Mar- zette, Rochelle Bradley, John Adams, James Braggs, Richard Santos, George Cleveland and Oscar Haynes, who has succeeded in iumping 20 feet. John Adams has iumped 23 feet llfg inches which is the longest from Bakers- field north. Only two other boys have ever accomplished this. The Tiger's top l32O runners r:re Alan Marchese, Robert Har- ris. and Tom Aragon. Hurdlers and sprinters are La- mont Whittle, Arnold Vinson, and Joe Amey. Shotput and discus throwers are Theodis Crump, Robert Ver- dugo, Joe Garcia, Sam Bishop, and Albert Williams. 880 runners are Jim Barnes, John Green, Bill Green, Eugene Marzette, Ed Burkes, Don Young. Ever hear of a championship team? This year's freshman and sophomore team can certainly fit into that category. They have won every meet they attended making them city, valley, and Northern Yosemite league cham- pions. Because this is a freshman- sophomore group, we can cert- ainly look forward to even better things from them in the future. 'WA CLASS C, First Row, L. to R.: E. Johnson, R, Alderete, J.
